Jon Samunder and the Dead Gallery is a trip. His gallery is stuffed with paintings currently in preparation for a show opening on Sept. 24th in town. While his long term focus seems to be skulls, portraits and complex-patterned paintings of faces/shapes/symbols and ritualistic figures, he is also making some beautiful images of the recent volcano, plants and flowers. He is gifted and I think very worth collecting. I purchased 2 of his volcano paintings - roughly 24x24 for under $1000. A number of the larger pieces were very impressive and will find good homes, I am sure. When we found the gallery, down a side alley off one of the main walking streets in old town, there was tape across the open front doorway. I had to knock and yell before he appeared out of a fabulously packed working art studio space. He said he was closed, too busy working on his upcoming show. I ignored his response and began pointing to paintings that I thought were interesting from the outside doorway view. He responded by spending 45 minutes talking art and looking at a wide array of his work. Jon is much more than a skull ring and t-shirt artist. He has a vision of reality that is extremely outsider, but with the skills to produce well composed and original images. It was a trip meeting Jon and I am happy to have his work hanging in my Chicago condo.

On a recent trip to Iceland, I made a great discovery....DEAD GALLERY. With his unique energy and talent, the artist Jon Samunder, creates colorful, iconic paintings and other art forms. I purchased two custom t shirts that have received lots of attention and compliments back here in the States.
I made several visits to this Gallery and was always warmly welcomed by the artist, his friends or family. I hope to purchase one of his paintings in the future. My visits to this gallery are some of my fondest memories of Iceland. If you are in Reykjavik be sure to visit the DEAD GALLERY.

It's worth looking for . It's worth visiting . I was sort of trying to evade the wash of tourists wandering along taking selfies and sneering at people who weren't wearing the same expensive wet weather gear as them . The Skull on the wall drew me in . The Shop was empty when I went in . Jon arrived ..... we chatted , we clicked , we identified . We were both survivors . He is a cool cat . I bought one of his Rings .... I have a number of Skull Rings . His was a simple design BUT beautiful . Chronically Icelandic . He gave me an Icelandic Wool hat as a treat ..... that is cool too . We talked about a number of things .... he recommended a book by Will Carruthers called " Playing the Bass With Three Left Hands" I have since ordered it , my friend Kimbo said the same ... it's a great memoir of heady times..... I loved the Spaceman 3 - a band of dudes . If you are nearby go in and have a chat - buy something , it is a hard call being creative - he needs your support . I wished I had bought a T-Shirt now . I totally agree with his message - He Who Fears Death Cannot Enjoy Life - I quoted TS Eliot to him and he smiled .... - Webster was a man much possessed by death , he saw the Skull beneath the skin - Thanks for the chat Jon x

It's a bit difficult to find from the main road (one must go into an alleyway - I was lucky to stumble upon it!)
This gallery/store has tons of exciting and macabre prints in addition to shirts, records, and skull sculptures. There's old music playing and a great, spooky ambiance within the gallery. Owner was extremely easy to talk to and prices were reasonable.
