Because of the climate change there was not much snow, so it was easily doable in january.
I started in Mestia, it took 2:30h to get to parking where majority leaves their car, then another 1:30h to get to the glacier as close as possible. I wasn’t rushing, so in total I got 8:30h and 23km.
It wasn’t cloudy at all, so the views were amazing.

Met de taxi naar de brug. Vanaf daar nog een uur wandelen. Eenvoudige wandeling door een mooi landschap. Bij de gletsjer uitkijken voor vallende stenen

Два часа пилить по лесной трапе, потом ползти по камням, чтобы в конце пути воскликнуть: «А где же собственно ледник?». Оказалось, что каменная глыба перед нами – это и есть этот восхваляемый всеми ледник. Я еле успокоила мужа. Никому не советую терять время и силы.

It was beautiful way. By car from Mestia to the bridge in the valley it is only a little while. From the bridge it is very nice track through a beautiful landscape with dense forest along the river. It is really impressive and relaxing.
Mestia taxi drivers are already quite spoiled by tourists because they "show power of money" and usually charge 40-50 GEL for this ride. We had rented car from small company in Tbilisi for whole stay in Gerogia which saved us a lot of money during our trip. Rent (price for rent a car) was cheaper than in large world-known rental companies. We rented Mitsubishi Pajero 3.0 V6 4x4, automatic (Tiptronic), with AC, LPG/Gasoline. For those who are interested, here is the phone contact: +995 577 39 31 90 (this number we used) and the second one is +995 591 41 32 41. We saved much money by riding on LPG, it was really big advantage. Car 4x4 in the mountains it is sometimes a necessity.
I definitely recommend visiting this place, as well as other places around Mestia. There is definitely something to see.

Yukarı svaneti’de uchba dağının etelerinde milyonlarca yıllık bu buzulu görmek için mestia’dan çok keyifli bir nehir kenarı yürüyüşü ile geldik. Müthiş bir doğa içinde kendini dinliyorsun.

è una bellissima passeggiata di circa due ore per toccare il ghiacciaio, molto semplice noi eravamo con nostro figlio di sette anni

It was really beautiful, one of the best place, I visited. The tour up was not so hard. We went up partly by hourse, we rented them and the guide from "Dede" shop. We defenetely do not recommend this shop. The guide did not wait for us, while we went up, and we had paid the full price before the trip. We tried to complain about the guide at the shop, but they "don't speak English, my dear friend".

The climb to the bottom of the glacier is along side to a flowing stream with extra ordinary scenery of mountains and un touched vegetation, wild nature.
You can walk 3 hours from Ushgoi or drive a 4x4 car and then walk 1 hour to the glacier.
Beware of falling rocks at the bottom of the glacier. Do not get close to the glacier as the falling rocks fall randomly as the ice melts.

Wij hadden het eerste gedeelte over de onverharde weg afgelegd met de auto, deze geparkeerd vlak voor hangbrug. De weg was een afgezet met rood lint zo'n 500 mtr voor de hangbrug in verband met werkzaamheden. De wandelaars kunnen gewoon doorlopen. De wandeling is ook goed te doen vanuit Mestia, Vanaf de hangbrug voert het (makkelijk te volgen) pad door het bosrijke gedeelte, langs de rivier naar de rotsen. Dat gedeelte vraagt iets meer klim en klauterwerk over de rotsen maar uiteindelijk heb je een fraai uitzicht over de gletsjer. Wij hadden geluk, een onbewolkte hemel is uitstekend voor de fotografie. Je kan doorlopen tot aan de gletsjer (pas op voor rollende stenen) maar wij hebben de gletsjer op gepaste afstand bekeken omdat voor ons de schoonheid dan groter is. Een aanrader.

Amazing place with gorgeous views. The walk is rather easy, around 1 hour up the hill from the main road.

Hi. Yes we arranged the horse ride through our hotel. We asked another guest, and got the same price. Seems typical rate is 20 GEL per horse for one hour ride. And 50 GEL per horse for the full day. We also had to pay for a guide (and his horse), as we were novice riders. So altogether (for two horses, one guide horse, and the guide himself) we paid 180 GEL. This was for a 6-7 hour ride to the glacier and back. A fun day. Good luck!

Hi Everyone, is it advisable to go to the glacier with carrying a 1 year old?
We are planning to go there in late September and really don't want to miss the glacier with our baby. Any tips on how to reduce the hiking by either drive a 4x4 to as close as possible to the glacier or by horse ride or is a baby stroller possible? Kindly advise.
