We are not Catholic but took the opportunity to experience a High Mass on a Sunday morning in Vienna. This church is not the largest or most extravagant in Vienna, but it was beautiful, and I liked the mostly white interior. We attended the 11 AM High Mass and the music was, as we had heard, beautiful. The opportunity to attend and enjoy the services was very interesting.

The church of St. Augustine is wonderful, thanks to our guide Mario, we discovered this church where the most important weddings in history were celebrated. I was fascinated by the work of Canova that is inside. The church is free of charge and, in my opinion, worth the visit more than the church of San Carlo which is for a fee!

The Augustinian Church hosted the ceremonies of the Habsburg family, being adjacent to the Hofburg. It houses the tomb of Maria Cristina of Austria, made by Canova and simply magnificent. Admission is free.

It was the family church of the Habsburgs for centuries. Sisi and Franz were married here. For centuries (sic!) the church has also been the setting for church services with church music, marked by orchestras and choirs with outstanding soloists.
For many years I have attended these “high offices (in the truest sense) of church music” and experienced masses by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert or Bruckner. I was also deeply impressed by one or the other sermon of the Augustinian Padres, who always shape the liturgy. The Augustinian Order has shaped the face of the church for centuries and has repeatedly given many faithful moments of glory in church music.
For this, for the Order and the extraordinary church music, I gladly award 5 stars!

Augustinerkirche does not appear in many guides, but in our review, we found it one of the most beautiful in the city.
Located in the whole of the Hofburg, but with a separate entrance (and free) outside in the Josefsplatz (next to the entrance of the famous library). If you don't look at the little bell tower, it's hard to recognize it. Surprisingly spacious interior, Gothic and with several outstanding elements (altarpiece, organ and royal tomb).
Ideal to rest a little on a sunny day of sightseeing.

Another obligatory stop for vacationers. Inside there is the cenotaph of Maria Cristina of Austria executed by Canova, an absolute masterpiece of the Master and certainly one of the highest results of Italian neoclassicism (and not only): alone it is worth the trip to Vienna. Indispensable

Beautiful Gothic church, remembered for being the site of many royal house weddings. Rich in frescoes and many masterpieces it contains my favorite work in Vienna. It is the pyramid-shaped tomb complex carved by Canova in memory of Maria Cristina of Austria. Symbolology to be studied. Absolutely not to be missed.

Near the entrance of the Library, integrated into the whole of the Hofburg. Ideal for relaxing and sheltering from the rigorous heat of Vienna in summer. The church is spacious, bright, with interesting altars and a striking funeral monument by Antonio Canova for one of the daughters of Empress Maria Teresa. Nice organ in the footstool.

Impressive Gothic church inside the Hoffburg complex. In addition to important works of art affixed to the walls and backs in wood carved with very special angels, there is an important sculptural work by Canova that represents the funeral monument dedicated to Maria Cristina of Austria

They also say that it is the church of the Capuchins. We entered through a small door that leads to Josef Square, which does not suggest the entrance to a church. Its historical significance is that it dates back to the 11th century, although it was restored in the 18th century. As for the artistic heritage, there are several valuable canvases and important chapels.

Do they have sunday mass with choir and ochestra during summer time?
I heard that many churches simplify their service(no choir, organ only) during summer(july-august),
so I just want to make sure if they still have the beautiful mass with choir in August.
I'm planning to visit there with my family who are not church goers, and I really want to make them have the most beautiful religious experience.
If they don't have full-high-mass during August, could anyone tell me where I can experience that kind of mass(with choir)?

Why do those who rebuff God go into a place made to worship Him in? The beauty is the best those artists could give and they praise God. We would all do well to emulate them. Did you find a way to give of yourself??

Some tourists go to churches, temples, mosques, etc., because they are famous, historic, and pretty. They take pictures, gawk, and tick another landmark off their list. Others are art and music lovers who want to appreciate great works in the venue for which they were created. Most are respectful.
The ones we notice are those who are not: people who talk too loud, take flash photos (especially of worshipers praying as they light candles,) touch the artwork, and so on. In this very church, someone stole my program when I went to take Communion. It was just a single photocopied sheet, but I had wanted to keep it. The lady who was sitting next to me was so horrified at this (near as I could tell, as I speak no German), she told me exactly what she thought of this horrible person, and she insisted I accept her husband's program -- they only needed one as a keepsake.
Tourists need to remember that these are more than museums -- they are real, working, living houses of worship.
Myself, I always put a few coins in the collection plate. I buy a CD. I say a prayer and light a candle. In Jewish sites, I say a prayer and leave a stone. Mostly, however, I write about my experiences. My two visits to this church were glorious. I love cathedrals, and have spent many happy hours exploring them. I hope my musings and (often strong) opinions at least occasionally assist a fellow traveler.

Where is the entrance to the church? We would like to go to Mass there but can't find it on the map! Is it on the St.Stephens side of the palace or where? I want to allow time to find it and I can't walk without a tri-walker.

Coming from the Opera and heading toward the Hofburg Palace, the church is on the left side of the street. The entrance is on the end closest to the main part of the Hofburg. So, coming from the Opera, you would pass the entire length of the church (there are concert posters on this wall every few feet). When you get to the end (and a courtyard), do a U turn to your left, and that's the entry.
Go as early as you can. I got there more than an hour before the service, and not only was I able to explore the church and snag a prime seat, the orchestra was rehearsing. What a treat!
