Visited with the family and had a great time. Tim, one of the staff members was very helpful and knew the answer to every weird and wonderful question we asked!

A beautiful old-fashioned museum; one of a kind. The main animal and bird galleries are in the Victorian style and still housed in original display cases. Lots of interesting information on cards; it really makes you slow down and take everything in (not a whizz round and poke at a few interactive screens kind of place!) A beautiful Anglo-Saxon room with life sized models and reproductions showing scenes of daily life; also a Roman villa but would be nice to see this expanded. The upper gallery shows the history of Ipswich chronologically - the kids love the 'Ipswich cats' in all the different period costumes.

I am writing to show how much this museum means to me. I have been many times over the years taking small family members, school parties and friends. The main entrance hall at the back is the most amazing part of the museum. It is a museum within a museum. The Victorian architecture and display is breath taking. The calm ambience will make you go back in time.
The museum will be shut from the end of this month for redevelopment. Over 5,000 people have signed the petition to encourage the powers that be to carefully consider any changes to this wonderful place.
Sadly the wonderful collection of birds will be going into store although the bird cliffs might be staying. We have been told the Victorian animal display will remain and hopefully not modernised. The Second W war exhibition is to be returned to people who lent items. The Anglo Saxon diaramaa may also go from their present form also. Hopefully as plans are made locals can be informed.
There is much that needs refurbishing, such as toilets, new cafe, education room, accessibility, repairing roofs and damp etc.
The thematic approach to new displays will cause aspects to be dismantled and replaced with updated labelling. History needs to be seen in context of the time and artefacts rightly should be talked about and questions asked .(Hopefully not removed)
I just hope there are people with influence out there who will listen to what is being said about this wonderful place.
Go and see it before it closes and say what you love about it.

This is another great museum with many gold coins. I like the war exhibits as it showed life in Ipswich during WW2.

An excellent experience. We were so impressed by the beauty of the museum and the way it’s Victorian character had been preserved. It has a wide range of fascinating artefacts but the whole experience was enhanced by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff who modestly offered so much assistance. They were a positive delight.

This is a good museum to visit the Egyptian section is our favourite part. Could do with a freshen up in areas and perhaps take things away because some rooms can be cluttered. Definitely worth a visit has great potential.

I have been here as both a child and an adult, and as a child it was much more interesting, so I would recommend visiting if you have kids. There are animals including a mammoth, which is a real treat for kids of course! In my recent visit, I was more interested by some of the old coins and artefacts on display. Also, the taxidermy birds are interesting to see and learn about the species, although the taxidermy displays themselves look quite tired.

Amazing collection but the star for me is the repro mammoth at the very start. Overall the taxidermy display could have better lighting to really bring out the shapes and colours. Children however really enjoyed the Easter egg hunt

Very informative museum in the centre of Ipswich. Free entry, upon walking in you are welcomed by a large woolly mammoth and towering giraffe. Great way to spend a couple of hours exploring natural history, ancient Egypt and local history including the world wars.
Recommend a visit, we came on a Sunday were you can get free on street parking but could be an issue at other times.

A lovely Museum. An eclectic range of exhibits and displays including the history of the town, numerous stuffed animals, ethnographic, the home front etc but the highlight for me was Crossings:community and refuge. The Lampedusa cross was particular powerful and nicely complemented by Issam Kourbaj's Dark Water, Burning World. Whilst, the exhibition itself is relatively small it's certainly thought provoking and really does provide a powerful insight into the sense of fleeing, conflict and our own individual and collective response. Well worth a visit, if just to see this.
And if you're looking for something to eat or grab a coffee, The Arbor House just up the road is great and indeed highly recommended.

What provision is made for wheelchair access? As the young man is only six years old, how acessible will exhibits be for him to see? Are there disabled toilets?
