First negative experience was at the ticket desk to be told there is no discount for Scottish National Trust members.
So we paid £19 for two which included the house and gardens apparently the gardens were free on this certain day Yippee.
The house is a total letdown absolutely nothing to see but bare rooms !!
We went into a cinema room where we watched in bewilderment a horse walking around a deserted car park in Germany and another film of a horse walking around a cathedral total tosh 😡
Next room was empty how very interesting NOT !!
Next room had stuffed dogs in it totally bizarre !!
There was nothing of interest in the rooms at all oh another room there was a video playing basically a sales pitch want people to donate their time and probably money to the conservation we’d already contributed enough with the extortionate entrance fee !!
The grounds were very underwhelming but if you like grass this is the place to visit acres of it and not a plant or shrub in site.
I reckon you can tell by my review that we wouldn’t waste our money time or energy on visiting this project again !!!
I also wouldn’t recommend to others a total let down.
Oh the only room that looked half decent was the long gallery but because you weren’t partaking in afternoon tea that room was off limits.
I must say the

What an amazing place! Although there are only a few rooms available for the public to see, the complexity and beauty of their decorative features is stunning. The tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable and were clearly passionate about the house. We needed the tour to get the most from the visit as it has such an interesting and complicated history, which explained why the house was almost empty. The huge, beautiful spaces were actually enhanced by being free of ‘clutter’.
We visited the George Stubbs exhibition which displayed very few of his skilful and beautiful paintings. The accompanying artworks were mainly by more recent artists and were in stark contrast with those of Stubbs. Particularly the stuffed dogs.
A wonderful day out.

Took the "Black Diamonds" Tour (ie coal, the wide "Barnsley Seam", that the owners of this huge pile built their vast wealth on) - is one of several options as this place has quite a history - with Joe who was fabulous - she'd actually been a student here back when was a Women's PE Teacher Training College so could add some real personal touches / memories.
The house (or houses as are in fact 3 that make up the place; 2 back to back with 1st one in the middle) are both grand and decrepit in places - they have a big job to restore everything, something like £150 million is needed we were told. As you look out you can't see any other part of civilisation but the enormous grounds with the various columns (no slag heaps here' although just after the war it was all open cast mined).
I was brought up a few miles away but first time I've been and wasn't disappointed.

Went to the Camillia House for lunch this week. The food was lovely, very tasty and a varied choice of small plates and sides. Would have liked to try them all 😊 All the dishes we chose were excellent. Good service and nice choice of drinks too. Can thoroughly recommend giving it a try.

We often come to this amazing house and have been on many tours. Today we came to go on The Black Diamonds Tour with Jo a former student at Lady Mable Teacher Training College. She was so knowledgeable and had lots of lovely stories and about her time here as well as explaining what life had been like at the house 150 years ago. A fabulous insight and we were able to visit areas we had not seen in other tours.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the House Tour with Jo; both engaging and interesting. The whole team were friendly and helpful which added to the experience. We wish you all well as you preserve the house, gardens and history

Wentworth Woodhouse is the very definition of 'Hidden gem' or even 'Well kept secret'.
It's a stunning stately home that has managed to stay under the radar of the vast majority of folk.
Their loss.
A mish-mash of architectural styles bonded together over the centuries result in a wonderfully unique building that is well worth seeing and touring. The 180 acres of grounds are breathtaking. The walks are wonderful and the views are to be savoured.
Recommended.

I am reviewing the gallery where we went for afternoon tea. What an experience. Fabulous atmosphere and very welcoming staff. First impressions were everything we had hoped. Well laid out tables, white linen tablecloths and napkins, crockery was age appropriate and beautiful.
We had 2 who needed gluten free, 2 vegan and a normal diet. The food came out on matching cake stands, all labelled and the presentation was faultless.
The food, well what can I say. As a coeliac I come across usually mediocre food at best. What a revelation this display of delicacies turned out to be. Soft bread, a rarity, tasty fillings. The savouries excellent. The scones were soft and plenty of flavour, topped with jam and cream, what a treat. The small tarts were lush, the Eton mess was perfect and biscuits, very tasty.
The vegan family members also had no complaints, their selection was the same, full of flavour, very enjoyable. The standard food was the same quality,
If you go try some of the teas and coffees, a fabulous selection, something to suit every palate and the menu had tasting notes, very helpful.
It was a very relaxed experience. No rushing, nothing was too much trouble for the very helpful staff. I didn’t think it was expensive, I’ve paid more in other places for what i would describe as inferior quality food and service.
It’s worth booking especially if you have dietary requirements so they know what to expect.

Always a lovely place for a visit, we have a membership which gives us great value for money. The gardens are beautiful with lots to see and lots of family activities. The craft activities available during holidays are always a highlight for us, with lots of ideas for things to make. All materials are provided, some projects are free and others ask for a small fee but all very reasonably priced. The lady who runs the crafts is always so kind and enthusiastic about helping the children make something beautiful.

On the bucket list for years, an amazing story and the visit surpassed expectations. A real glimpse into the industrial past and how social and societal change doomed Wentworth. Can’t wait to see the stables, when they are restored. Cafe was nice, gardens fantastic to walk around. Will be back.

Just wondering how much of the house is available to view (seeing as it is being restored). Also, are they restored sections or original?
كُتب بتاريخ 19 يونيو 2023
Hi if you book one of the tours you will see a lot more and learn about the history, Obviously it is in the process of restoration, but definitely worth a visit.

Can you just visit and walk around the grounds without a ticket or booking?
كُتب بتاريخ 16 ديسمبر 2020
It’s by tour only and it’s not cheap! £20 a ticket unless you’re a member of the Nationals trust when it’s £10. But its worth it and you feel you’re doing your bit to being the house back to life. I don’t usually do tours but our guide was so knowledgeable it was completely worth it.

Do you have to book a tour? My father is 90 but tires very easily so have to take things very nice and steady with quite a few breaks so it would be nice to wander around at our own pace.

Hi Malc,
At the moment, as we develop the house, it is pre-booked guided tours only. This is due to various factors including security and health and safety. We certainly hope to be free flow as soon as possible. If you would like to give the office a call on 01226351161 however, I am sure we could discuss your father's needs and see what we can do. We would hate for him to miss out on seeing this special place.
Thank you

Hi Cally,
Thank you for your enquiry. House tours are currently £20.00 per person and £5.00 for the garden. If you would like more information please do not hesitate to call our office number on 01226351161. National Trust (for England and Wales) do indeed get a discount of 50% on the tours.
Thanks
كُتب بتاريخ 3 أغسطس 2018
How do you claim the National Trust discount? When you try to order tickets online there's no facility for claiming this that I can see.
Kind regards
Dave

Hi Fraiser,
Thank you for your enquiry. Our website is currently under review and will be re-deigned in the next couple of months. Unfortunately therefore, we don't have the ability to create a 'section' for National Trust members. The new one will of course have this facility. In the mean time if you could call the office on 01226 351161 then they will be able to do it for you.
Hope you enjoy your visit.
Best wishes,
Jen

When will the booklets about the house be available? They were being printed when I went on the Fitzwilliam Tour of the house. I rang a couple of weeks ago and they still hadn't come back from the printers.

It was advertised as an hour but we were there over 2 hours. It depends on the group size and number of questions. The volunteers live their job and took delight in sharing information.

whats the best junction on the M1 to come off to get to Wentworth Woodhouse ? Im coming up from Birmingham

the answer depends if you have sat nav? junc 34 is the quickest, but sometimes its easier to go a bit further and have less turns and roads to follow
I would recommend junc 36, up the sliproad, and take the 3rd exit, then at the next roundabout take the 3rd exit again, drive though hoyland common, under a bridge, and start to climb the hill. take the next left signed Harley and Wentworth, drive though Harley, then through Wentworth, past both the pubs and the Bistro, the road turns left with a high stone wall on your right, take the next right (cars are usually parked) through the entrance marked private (visitors to the house are allowed) down the drive, past the stables, over the cattle grid, take the right hand fork (again marked private) and park on the left hand side of the drive (other visitors to the house will most likely be also parked
