Great food, dog-friendly, helpful and friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed their pate on warm brown crusty roll with salad, broccoli and Stilton soup, scampi with peas and sweet potato fries and bbq chicken.

Great Landlord, lovely staff, excellent Sunday lunch. Amazing thank you so much.
We met family here on an off chance. Needed a dog friendly pub to meet for lunch. What a gem. The landlord greeted us went out of his way to make us comfortable. The staff were all very helpful and they provided us with a lovely Sunday lunch. Wow we will definitely be back

Thank you to Emma and all the staff at the Woodpecker for their help with providing a lovely venue and great service for our family’s 30th birthday celebration. Nothing was too much trouble.

Extremely friendly welcome for us and our Lurcher. Great service and food. We came to avoid the horrendous explosive fireworks and bonfire on Abingdon Airfield and were delighted with the food and welcome. We enjoyed their stilton and broccoli soup, prawn cocktail, scampi and bbq chicken, served with sweet potato fries. Rosie, our Lurcher, was given treats and was reluctant to leave after our meal as she had thoroughly enjoyed the fuss made of her.

Our first visit and won’t be our last. Small friendly pub both staff and locals were welcoming. The roast was delicious and really reasonably priced. Could not recommend this place enough! Portion size was generous and we were moved to a table so we could view the football without fuss. Football score went our way too so all in all a super Sunday out!

Visiting from the States with friends from Canada, we’d just completed our fourth day of festivities at nearby Highclere Castle and stopped in at The Woodpecker Washwater on a Saturday night. All four of us were stilled dressed in full “Downton Abbey” costume, and we were greeted as though we were royalty by locals and the owners, Emma and Rob, alike. (They even took our photo.) This place is WONDERFUL!!! Friendly, welcoming, delicious food -- between us we enjoyed the fish & chips, bangers & mash with onion gravy, pate with crusty bread and salad garnish -- and more alcohol than we should probably admit to, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place for supper. The restaurant was already jumping when we walked in, and a party of more than a dozen was expected shortly after we arrived, but Emma and Rob (the only two people taking care of everything) were smiling and joking while working very, very hard. They told us that they’d just recently taken over The Woodpecker in June, but they’ve clearly hit the ground running. Prices were more than fair, plenty of parking, close to A34, this place has it all. Our only regret is that we live “across the pond” and can’t be regulars here! (P.S. In the southern United States, a “peckerwood” is an unfriendly, low class, often criminal, person. You’ll find none of them at Woodpecker Washwater!)

Popped in today for Sunday Lunch for 5 people. As we had a dog with us we were seated in the bar area, however, with proper chairs and a large round table we were very comfortable and could converse easily. I mention the size of the table as it needed to be for the amount of food served!
The quantity of meat was large and the plate came with roast potatoes, a Yorkshire Pudding & some gravy. The other vegetables were freshly cooked and served separately and there were masses of them too ie cauliflower cheese (superb), peas, broccoli and carrots (all freshly cooked to perfection) and there was an extra jug of gravy each to top up if needed. Extras available for a nominal fee were cheesy roast potatoes, more cauliflower cheese (I have no idea who could eat more!) and additional yorkshire puddings.
The desserts were also excellent and good value and the meal with one drink and a coffee came to only just over £17.50 a head. The roast elements from this bill were £10.95 or £11.95 (depending on the choice) and £7.95 (for the one smaller eater amongst us)
The service throughout was excellent and it was hard to find any fault. We shall return for sure.

Visited this pub last Sunday for lunch and to my surprise it was out of this world will be going every week from now on Emma the land lady was very pleasant and very welcoming

Having spent an evening in this fine establishment I can only say that I am astounded.
Rarely have I been somewhere where, not only was I made to feel more like an old friend than a customer, but also experienced some of the finest beer and food this side of the Michelin guide.
I would highly recommend this inspiring establishment with its fun loving landlord and bustling atmosphere.

Second Visit! very pleased with the food and service! staff were polite and courteous as usual!
Roobs the Staff was a hit with the bar staff,offering her treats and water and taking her picture! She thanked them with lots of doggie kisses!
On the first visit, we were a bit late for food,but the landlord offered and made us something to eat and we were there past closing time
I think he needed the company whilst doing his homework! :-)
Will definitely visit again soon!
