Solomon's Temple, also known as the First Temple, is a Temple in Jerusalem believed to have existed between the 10th and 6th centuries BCE ...so why is it that this by the same name, exists.
Solomon's Temple, also known as Grinlow Tower, is a Victorian folly on the summit of Grin Low hill...and before you ask... :) Follies are garden buildings and structures designed to enhance and enliven the surrounding landscape.
On 23 February 1894, a meeting at Buxton Town Hall decided to rebuild a landmark tower that had been built by Solomon Mycock, of the Cheshire Cheese Hotel, in the early 19th century, and of which only a few stones remained. The Local Board vice-chairman had talked with the seventh Duke of Devonshire's agent and decided that the reconstruction was feasible if the townspeople would donate sufficient money.
In 1894, the seventh Duke of Devonshire subscribed £25 towards building the folly. Buxton had already subscribed £50. The foundation stone was laid by Colonel Sidebottom, M.P., on 31 May 1896, witnessed by a large crowd, and the tower was opened by Victor Cavendish in September 1896.
There are a few reasons to visit the temple... exercise! Ha ha... I know... whatever! But on a serious note, there were many walkers doing the walk. But I feel the best reason to do it is to climb the tower and enjoy the 360 degree views from the top... but even if you are afraid of heights, you can stand at it's base and be captivated by those views. I am terrified of heights, but I still climbed the stairs to take those views in... which means if I can do it... you may be able to as well.
I am so glad I visited it... I considered NOT walking up there, but when in Rome one should do as the Roman's do... well in Buxton... this is where the locals walk and you will see why when you get there.

It was a long and windy walk but when you get there the reward of fantatsic views is well worth it. It's a steady climb but there are plenty of benches for those that need a rest.

Well worth the climb up the hill for the marvellous views from the top of the tower. Nice walk through the forest before you reach the stile to begin the walk up. Worth a visit if in the area

Such an amazing place! We have both walked from the nearby car park and also walked up the hill from the town/cavern car park. Amazing at sunrise or sunset. The view across the town and area are the best from up there.

It was raining when we visited - and we enjoyed the woodland walk despite it being a bit steep in places. Part way up the woods recede and you cross open grassland to reach the tower. You can climb it if you want - I chose not to. On a clear day I bet the views are fab - it was pretty murky when we went but still worth the visit. Easy to get to on foot from Central Buxton - no car required if you're staying locally.

Climbed to Solomon’s tower today and it was so well worth it. Quite a steep climb to begin with but it levelled out and we saw such magnificent views.
Downside was we got a little lost coming down as the directions were few and very far between. All was good as there were other ramblers about to help us.

Late September 2022.
A good way to spend a couple of hours ! It's at the top pf a hill some some energy is required but it's not difficult. The routes are obvious and the only difficulty for some is maybe the stile which can be a bit tricky to climb over. Good views from the temple and toilet and cafe facilities at Poole's cavern .......... recommended.

Nice location, just a short walk from a huge country car park. I didn't realise that you could climb to the top as when I have visited, it's always overrun with kids messing about. Only worth a visit if you're passing or part of a walk.
