Lovely green space to wander. There is a river and winding paths. A lake for pedal boats, playground and quiet places. Lots of ducks and geese too. In the Pavilion buildings there are places to eat and drink and peruse local crafts and artwork for sale. There is also a greenhouse to look inside. It's the starting point for tram tours of Buxton, so masses to keep you occupied. There is a large car park and it's only a 5 minute stroll out to the town itself.

Well, where to start! We recently had our wedding ceremony in the Conservatory followed by lunch in the Art Cafe and we could not have wished for a more perfect venue or a better day. From the very beginning of planning Christine, Leah, Ed, and their colleagues all 'got' what we were going for and were incredibly accommodating and supportive. Every planning meeting was a pleasure and Leah was communicative and responsive through the whole year of planning, which took away so much of the stress. At points it even felt a bit too easy!
The food was incredible and despite having loads of dietary restrictions in the group (celiac, vegan, nut allergies, meat allergies) everyone left full to the brim and raving about the vegan chilli and beef hotpot. Even the pickiest kids and grandparents were thrilled with the food and went back for seconds. The team were even able to provide 5 different vegan cakes, plus gluten free brownies (all of which were so delicious we couldn't believe they were free-from!).
On the day Leah and her colleagues saw to it that everything went perfectly, and they were so excited for us that we felt we had a few extra friends in the room. Having someone overseeing the timeline took any worries away and meant we could really relax and enjoy the day. This day-of support would cost hundreds at any other venue but came as part of the (very, very reasonable) venue hire. The Conservatory looks amazing with all the greenery and beautiful natural light - it's perfect for photos.
All in all we could not have found a better venue or more lovely people to do it all with, and we'll always be grateful for the kindness and support of the staff at the Pavilion. We'd highly recommend the stunning gardens or Conservatory as a wedding venue - or even the beautiful Octagon Hall for a bigger event - it's such a hidden gem. Thank you Pavilion crew - we'll be back for cake and coffee soon!

The once-lovely Gardens seem to be in a bit of a state. There are far too many geese everywhere which have ruined the grass by eating it and leaving their mess all over it. The middle of the Gardens is a sea of mud covered with feathers and bird poo. It doesn’t help that people feed the geese, which just encourages them.
And the bins look awful, the beautiful bridges desperately need painting and so do most of the railings!
Another low point during our visit was seeing two enormous brown rats on the grass by an overflowing litter bin.
The Pavilion looks good after its renovation but the Gardens are becoming an eye-sore.

The River Wye banks have been landscaped for public purposes since the middle of the nineteenth century when they were known as Serpentine Walks. When 12 acres of land was given to the town by the Duke of Devonshire, Edward Milner was commissioned to design the grounds - also to construct a glass and cast-iron Pavilion. The building formed a Winter Garden and a Concert Hall - echoing Crystal Palace in London (which was built as part of the Great Exhibition of 1851)
This garden is quite formal. There is a bandstand, formal garden beds and water features. There is even a small train cleverly hidden away. You can imagine people promenading here over the years and ... close your eyes and you could easily join them. The area is quite stunning... the buildings as a backdrop add something to the experience. There are many cafes around the area and even an ice creamery.
I said hello to a gentleman, John with his dog and had the most engaging conversation... it turns out that whilst he has lived in England for many years, he is Australian.

It’s so sad to see Buxton’s once-glorious Gardens in such a poor state - far too many invasive geese have destroyed large areas of the grass with their mess. The railings are covered in green mould, the bins are filthy and rusting, as are the once-lovely benches. To top it all, on the day we visited, there were three enormous brown rats on the grass by the children’s railway line. I think they were attracted by the overflowing bin nearby.
Given the really beautiful job that has been done to restore the wonderful Victorian Pavilion and Octagon Centre, how has Buxton let its Gardens get into this state?

The gardens are superb but what has happened to the waitress service cafe! It is now a ‘queue up to order drinks and rolls’. The staff were churlish and unfriendly and everyone is given their drink in a cardboard cup. You then find somewhere to sit at long tables with benches; somewhat reminiscent of a school dining hall. £5.70 for two good coffees was acceptable but we will never go in there again. It used to be so nice!

Well done Buxton for ensuring such a varied beautiful space is so well maintained for locals and visitors alike. Gardens and buildings are great to explore and enjoy. Loved the planting in the conservatory, refreshments in the cafe and art gallery. Visited couple of times during our stay.

Fab annual art & antiques fair fair every May - It's the main reason we visit Buxton every year. It's been running more than 50 years and I haven't found a better place to buy such a wide range of high quality pieces.

What a lovely day we had! The Pavilion Gardens is a fantastic place for all ages and the staff are always so helpful and polite. We loved the different flavour ice creams in the Ice Cream Parlour and bought some great gifts and plants in the Octagon event.
We will be back!

Hi Liz, we didn’t have our dog with us but we also didn’t spot any dogs in the cafes. We do tend, as owners to notice them if they’re there. However the day we visited was extremely hot and not many people had their dogs in the park either. I’m sorry I can’t give you a definitive answer and can only suggest ringing a couple of the venues your considering and checking them out directly. Everyone we approached for info was incredibly and refreshingly helpful.
Good luck, Chris

Hello Catheeeee, We're really excited that you're visiting us this summer and that your little one wants to go on the train!
Running times for the train vary and are weather dependant. During the summer holidays however, it usually operates between 11/12 - 3/4
If you drop us a message a few days before you visit on Facebook/Twitter we'll be able to give you a better idea.
We look forward to seeing you!
