What a hidden gem! Knew nothing of the fantastic stories of hiding Charles II. A very interesting and atmospheric place to visit.
The volunteers are fantastic, so knowledgeable and keen. Look out for the rogue and don't get scammed!
Great facilities for young and old. Lots to do for kids.

A very interesting morning, we took the guided tour around the house (our guide was Kevin). He made the tour very interesting, informative and funny.
We then had a quick bite to eat in the coffee shop, before looking around the gardens.
All the staff there are very friendly and helpful. It was a lovely morning spent at a very interesting property

Visited on a heritage open day, the volunteers were really lovely and knowledgeable especially the gentleman talking about Charles II escape and the lady with all the medical history she was truly inspiring. The cafe was great too with friendly staff, truly recommend the visit to this little gem.

Very interesting visit, particularly the story of Charles II hiding from Cromwell’s troops in the priest hole. Helpful volunteers.

People talk of hidden gems; this one is not so hidden but a true National trust gem. Fascinating history including the escape of Charles II, brought to life by excellent volunteer guides.
This is a manor house, not a grand house but has many period features and small gardens plus more extended walks in a natural environment. There is also the usual NT cafe and bookshop for some refreshments.
One of our best National trust experiences, and can thoroughly recommend.

What can one say but amazing. The tour guides are a fantastic sauce of knowledge added with the historical story of Charles 11 and his escape to France. The building is historically pleasing and although the artifacts are not from the building but the era apart from the bed Charles slept in added to it's
authenticity. It has to be my best and most interesting vist to a National Trust property and I thank the volunteers for their dedication and historical knowledge. Not to be missed if you are in the area.

After waking to a bright and sunny Bank Holiday morning I decided to make the trip out to Moseley Old Hall. It's only a stone's throw from the beautiful Wightwick Manor, and if you're a Trust tourist it's doable to visit both properties in one day if you've got the stamina.
The reception is a lot larger than I expected, with a mini Trust shop and a treasure trove of a second-hand book collection to its right, including a 'childhood nostalgia' section. There's original 1960s Enid Blytons up for very reasonable prices and lots of annuals dating through to the 1980s. You can get your NT passport stamped at reception, and there are a few NT collectable goodies you can grab too, including embroidered patches, pin-badges and postcards.
I was advised that the first tour would start at 11am, so I made my way over to the house ready for its beginning. I was asked if I pre-booked (and I'd advise it if it's a very busy day) but if it's not too large the tour guide will let you come along. We had Judith as ours. The Hall isn't lived in these days, of course, but she was an excellent storyteller and very knowledgeable. It will last around 45 minutes (not too short, not too long), Judith kept it interesting enough for younger guests, and there are plenty of artefacts to pore over. Look out for the priest hole that King Charles II declared as 'the best he's ever been in', the original missal used by Father Huddleston kept behind glass, and the hand-painted stars on the ceiling of the attic chapel. The beautiful kneelers in the chapel have been hand-embroidered by Trust volunteers. The bed is still the original - if the Mander family of Wightwick Manor hadn't bought it from the Whitgreaves' descendants centuries later (the owner was originally going to dismantle it and put it into storage), goodness knows where it would've ended up.
The outdoors is just as interesting; the Knot Garden is a thing of beauty and the Trust are currently raising some money via tour tips to give it a bit of TLC. There aren't any long walking paths (unless you fancy a trip to Northycote Farm) but the meadow is full of wildflowers for bees, and there's a full treehouse for kids to explore. Open green spaces have kids' games set out, so there's plenty to keep them engaged while adults can sit with a cuppa or look at the working garden. There's also a working orchard and the Hall holds an Apple Harvest every September.
As with Wightwick Manor, the volunteers were helpful and chatty. In the parlour, I met a volunteer who was sewing blackwork onto linen - it's one of my favourite embroideries and I had to go and stand by her to geek out about needlework!
Also, before heading home, I decided to drop into the Trust tearoom (a converted barn) to sample the goods. It was busy as it was such a beautiful day, but I located a table and purchased a cream tea. Ice-creams are also on offer from a hatch on the ground floor.
Finally, while Moseley Old Hall is a fascinating little property that's well worth a visit - the only thing that lost it a blob was the drive up. It's been mentioned in other reviews that some of the journey is a very narrow single-track lane: this isn't uncommon for Trust properties, but this one was particularly dicey. I managed to get in and out of the car park without much of a problem as I arrived so early, and thankfully I drive a tiny three-door car that can turn tightly - how a 4x4 would manage, I really don't know. The road is also shared with other users, and if you're behind a cyclist or horse-rider, there's no chance of overtaking safely until you turn onto the main road.
Granted there's not a whole lot the Trust can do about any of that, but in my humble opinion a warning on the Hall's webpage would be a good shout. Another reviewer mentioned parking up at Northycote Farm and doing both attractions in one day as the Hall is walkable from there. I didn't do this myself but could be a solution for folks driving larger vehicles.
That being said, top marks to everything else especially the lovely NT volunteers who keep this place alive. To any potential visitors I can only recommend you go on a guided-tour if you can, it really does make a difference.

We had a lovely few hours at Moseley Old Hall. I recommend the guided tour of the house. Our enthusiastic guide, Kevin, led us round, regaling us with colourful stories and anecdotes.
The grounds are not large, but still worthy of exploration. The small tea room was very welcome.

Absolutely amazing little place, lots for kids to do and fascinating history! We didn’t manage to get onto an official tour of the house but one of the volunteers- Ken- went above and beyond! He was worth his weight in gold (I’m sure he knows the history behind that saying😂), his passion really made our day! Thank you Ken 😊 Rose, Katie & baby Will

Hi Esme, I am a tour guide at Moseley old hall, and would like to mention that the house is only closed from Christmas to mid February, and is open 7 days a week.

كُتب بتاريخ 14 أغسطس 2016
As mentioned, dogs are welcome on leads, except in the café or house (assistance dogs only). According to the leaflet, if you don't clean up after your dog you may be put in the stocks!

Hi, it's always best to phone to check the property is open. Some National Trust Properties restrict room openings at certain times of the year for cleaning and renovation. Hope you have a great day out.
