‪St Peter's is a decommissioned / redundant church near to the banks of the River Thames at the old market town of Wallingford. Beautiful spire and unfussy, uncomplicated interior - the church really keeps the emphasis on the Christian message rather than any gilded memorials. In fact, prominence is given to the Lords Prayer, the Ten Commandments and the Apostles Creed, all beautifully shown on the chancel wall.
Of interest to children inside the church, is the family grave stone of Sir William Blackstock and family, which has a large skull and crossbones motif.
The simplicity of the church is also reflected in the charming roofing contrasting with the brown wooded pews.
It is a splendid building, lovingly cared for by a charity‬

‪The Spire attracted me to this church, but I was shocked to find it does not function as a church anymore. Disappointed ‬

‪St. Peter's has been deconsecrated these many years past, because St. Mary's is so close. But it is open every day, for visitors to look around.

The church is the second on the site, from C18, and built largely with funds from Sir William Blackstone – he of the 'Commentaries on the Laws of England'.
The nave and chancel are of limited interest. Surprisingly bare in the inside, but now often used during the summer for music and concerts.
The spire is interesting, and leaves few indifferent. Some hate it, as "mean and spindly"; others like it, as uniquely slender and gracious. It includes a working clock, looking out across the River Thames.
Th most distinctive feature is the raised ground it is built on: 10 feet above the levels around it. Made up - I suspect- with rubble from the destruction of Wallingford Castle by the Parliamentary forces during the Civil War. It gives the church a commanding - if partly hidden - position, as the first view of Wallingford from the other side of the river.‬

‪Ancient church close to Wallingford bridge, with wild garden. Now mainly a venue for chamber music concerts, with modest seize and good acoustics. The church has an austere and simple beauty. There is a simple monument to Sir William Blackstone, a lawyer of great renown.‬

‪St. Peter's has been deconsecrated some time back, but is kept open during summer days by volunteers. The church itself is of moderate interest - mostly because of the very slim spire, which attracts admiration and obloquy in equal measure.

But the interest is in what was there before. A C13 church, built on over half a hectare of ground raised 3 metres above the sourrounding land [to eliminate the risk of flooding]. the manual labour involved in shifting that much soil must have been enormous. A tribute to the religious commitment of the early Middle Ages.‬

‪The memorial of Blackstone is very important in this churchyard but it can be difficult to get to it because of the nettles which can grow very high. An interesting history but the church is spoilt by the staging in the chancel which takes away from the beauty of the building. I know that the staging is needed in the summer but it should be removed the rest of the year.‬

‪A strange church with a modern (ish) spire atop a much older church. Inside, some interesting aspects - a plaster ceiling; an octagonal bell tower; a tomb to Sir William Blackstone.

No longer used as a church, it is now looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust - the whole place can be rented for events and live music.‬
