24-2-2023 - called The Great Central Railway to make a booking for the Railway Cream Tea in September 2023 (for 2 people) as we had kindly been given gift vouchers to the value of £60.00. The website confirmed availability and proceeded to make the booking at the price of £35 + VAT per ticket. The website didn't have anywhere to include the vouchers so called the main number to redeem over the phone and make reservation with the credit card for the balance. I asked if I could reserve the date over the phone and secure the seats (with balance payment by credit card) and to bring the vouchers on the day to complete payment. The supervisor confirmed that the vouchers had to be sent back to the station at our OWN cost or to DRIVE them to Loughborough ourselves!! I asked who would pay the extra cost of fuel or postage and the supervisor confirmed that this would be at our own cost!
Anything could get lost in the post and while this happens and the time taken for this process, the original experience date could get booked up!?!
The gift vouchers confirmed on them that they could be used against Dining Car experiences so with this, I asked if they could be redeemed on the day? I was told this was not possible as booking needed to be made prior to entering the station!
The vouchers received were a very kind Christmas gift and as this was the first time in using The Great Central Railway and I was looking forward to making the booking. This has now left me with no confidence in using their bookings or experiencing what they have to offer due to their inflexibility and complete lack of customer service! Be very careful if you have gift vouchers from this company as you will incur additional costs trying to make a booking with possible problems of securing your required trip. Whilst I understand that this is a voluntary non profit organisation, old fashioned paper vouchers for high price ticket items do not work in 2023. They really do need to invest in a more modern and efficient, dynamic booking system which includes digital vouchers. Quite frankly, these vouchers are no different to a 1950's postal order!

Visited the GCR to travel behind a steam locomotive as advertised. The only service running steam was a dinner service with 3 non restaurant coaches attached to the back of the dining rake. To give the diners the full time for their Gastronomic experience the train was "paused"(to use the GCR parlance) for over 20 minutes in both directions between stations. Fine for those dining, not so for the rest of us. So no time left to view much else on the Railway. Given the GCR makes much of its status as the only double tracked heritage railway on the UK would it have been to much to expect to roster a loco and crew to run an additional service for the paying customers in the very full non dining coaches? Not the best visitor experience GCR, the Severn Valley and North Yorks Moors do it better..

Hello Phil, we are sorry that you feel that you missed out on this occasion. We are currently running our low season timetable which has between two and three steam hauled trips per day accompanied by our scenic railcar covering the other three to four trips. Our timetables are published in advance of each weekend and show what are running. The cost of coal has rised significantly in the past year so we (alongside most other heritage railways) have had to cut down on our steam use, especially on these quiet weekends. Please keep an eye on our website for when we move to our mid and high season timetables where there will be more steam services running.

The line was packed with more people than i have seen at one line before.
The timetable went out the window and caused massive delays and people were left standing in trains and on platforms not knowing what was going on. Poor communications caused even more problems as nobody seemed to know what was happening.
Perhaps the people planning these events could look at having an emergency time table at the ready in case of train break downs, that could be rolled out. The published timetable could of been better, as there was two DMU running. These could of been better used to keep people on the move between Loughborough and Rothley.
This Gala was poor compared to previous ones on the line.

Hello Matthew, we are sorry that our gala did not live up to your expectations from previous visits. On the Saturday morning of the Gala we experienced the failure of our rostered Diesel locomotive D123. This resulted in a number of small alterations to the timetable to keep the service running and included the addition of a second DMU (Railcar) to cover some trips as well as combining of our C set/Suburban sets of coaches to help improve the capacity on our trains. Our team of dedicated volunteers worked around the clock to keep services running with as little delay as possible and we are working hard to find out where time could have been saved to make our service more efficient at future events. We hope that you can visit us again at a future event.

Great idea to hold this event at a time of year when normally there isn’t much going on for most heritage railways.
Lots going on! Timetable didn’t quite go to plan though and trains were about 45 minutes late by the end of the Saturday. Trains were all full and standing!
Well organised. Lots of places for a variety of different different refreshment options at each station so no massive queues.

Arrived for a special occasion at the station a few minutes late, train was still there. My daughter asked the station master to wait a few seconds for her mum to come down the stairs with a disability. The station master refused and blew the whistle in front of my daughter and then laughed about our situation to another colleague. Emailed the marketing manager Michael Stokes who lied and stated he was the station master and refused to do anything for us. Disgusting racist behaviour for no reason. Poor customer service and would not recommend going to this station for special events as last years was also poor

With reference to the post titled ‘Disgusting behaviour’, we feel a strong duty to reply to this post. Following email correspondence with the writer of the TripAdvisor post, we committed to thoroughly investigate for both clarity, ensuring all of our actions were correct, and to exonerate the GCR from the suggestion of racism. We have fully investigated these comments, and believe they are not a true reflection of the events that occurred. To aid our investigation we have CCTV at our Loughborough Station. This allows for multiple views of the station platform and of the approaches outside of the main entrance to the station.
The train in question was the last Santa train on Christmas Eve. The time shown on the ticket was 3.50pm for departure. Our working timetable for Santa Trains has the actual departure 5 minutes after the time shown on the ticket, to allow a margin for late arrivals and essential checks that are required prior to despatching the train. As such the scheduled departure time was at 3.55pm. We can see from our CCTV that the car carrying the two persons noted in the post pulled up directly outside of Loughborough station on the day referred to. The car passenger door opened at 3:54:57pm. The first person alights the car (we believe this to be the daughter referred too) and goes over to the rail bridge to see if the train is still in the station. From here going back to the car briefly before entering the station at 3:55:11pm. This person proceeds through the Booking Hall and down the stairs to the platform, reaching this point at 3:55:30pm. Upon reaching the platform the first lady is approached by a member of the GCR staff. At this point the train can be seen clearly moving past them both as it exits the station. The other lady from the car (who we assume to be the complainant) reaches the bottom of the stairs at 3:56:26pm, by which time the train was already out of the station.
There is a strict procedure regarding how trains are despatched, involving several people with very specific safety critical jobs. All procedures are in line with agreed practices and disciplines, similar to those on the National Network. At 3:54:49pm, the Station Master checks to see if anyone is coming down the stairs. Following this, final checks are made and the Guard gives a final approval to the driver to depart by whistle and a signal. We can see the locomotive crew acknowledge the signal at 3:55:07pm.
Once the despatch has been confirmed, the only way to stop the train would be to effect an emergency stop. This would only ever happen in a true emergency, as stopping a train is not without risk to passengers. The train commences moving at 3:55:18pm. At this point the first person is still coming down the stairs and reaches the platform at 3:55:30pm. By this time the locomotive is already underneath the bridge. By 3.55:48pm the Locomotive, Tender and carriages have all exited the station. The second person (who we understand to be the complainant) is seen on CCTV entering the station at 3:55:52pm, reaching the platform at 3:56:26pm, i.e. over a minute after the train began moving.
In reply, to the comments attributed to the Station Master. For clarity the person who approached the daughter was our Marketing Manager, who due to the extreme cold was wearing a heavy anorak complete with hood, whilst our Station Master was in full GCR period uniform and was positioned approximately half way along the platform at this time. At no point did anyone blow a whistle at this time, as we can confirm from above notes the train had already departed. We categorically deny that a whistle was blown in front of the daughter.
It is difficult to confirm the exact words used in the discussion between our Marketing Manager and the daughter. However, we acknowledge the following:
Daughter: “Can you stop the train!”
Marketing Manager: “No, I’m sorry the train has already been despatched”
Daughter: Can we catch the train at another station
Marketing Manager: “This is the last train, all the stations are now closed. This is a return trip only”
Marketing Manager: “Unfortunately, there are no Santa trains now until next year.”
Furthermore we acknowledge that there was a conversation between our Marketing Manager and the Station Master. This occurred as the person identified as mother and daughter were leaving the station and had begun climbing the stairs to the road. Our Marketing Manager had walked down the platform towards the Station Master, who was standing approximately half way along the length of the platform. Their exchange was recollected as “You wouldn’t believe it, the very last train of the season and they missed it.” There were definitely no derogatory remarks or any laughter directed at either of the 2 persons who missed the train. We categorically deny any form of racism, and furthermore can find no evidence to substantiate this claim.
Following the completion of our investigation, we have twice offered a meeting either in person or virtually to share our evidence with the writer. These requests have been declined. Whilst we would have liked to discuss this with them directly, we believe the only option is to now reply to the post on the TripAdvisor website.
It is indeed unfortunate that the train was missed by such a small margin. However, we hope our explanation of events shows how this happened and that we were unable to stop the train. If this had happened at an earlier time, we would have certainly made arrangements for this party to join another train. However, this was the very last Santa Train to be run in 2022. We accept that this would have been a disappointing and frustrating outcome for the visitors concerned. However, we strongly refute the allegations that have been made and support our staff, whose motives have been called into question by such allegations.
To aid clarity we have prepared a timeline of events.
3:50:00 - Time Shown on Ticket
3:54:49 - Station Master checks to see if anyone is coming down the stairs
3:54:57 - Car arrives outside Loughborough Station and first person exists
3:55:07 - Locomotive crew acknowledge Guard's signal to pull out of station
3:55:11 - First person enters the station booking hall
3:55:18 - Train begins to move
3:55:30 - First person reaches station platform
3:55:52 - Second person enters the station
3:56:14 - Train has fully departed the platform
3:56:26 - Second person arrives at the platform
3:37:37 - Guests depart, climbing the stairs to the booking hall
3:57:43 - Marketing Manager and Station Master begin discussion.

I love the Great Central Railway, I've been a fan since my daughter was very young. So many lovely trips and memories however feel incredibly disappointed in this long awaited visit to Santa. With a poor review I feel I should go into detail for future experience goers to make an informed decision.
Some positives but the overall feeling is we've been ripped off. Where was the magic of it all?
Incredibly lovely staff and Santa himself was a happy, jolly fellow but we paid extra money for the 'Santa Deluxe' rather than just the 'Santa Special' with a description of more time with Santa, more refreshments and an upgraded gift.
As we sat down, 2 crackers for 3 of us on the table (?) along with and a price list for snacks (hot, soft and alcoholic drinks, crisps, confectionary) and very reasonably priced we thought.
Staff brought a large white chocolate cookie for daughter with a choice of fruit shoot. Appreciated it, although she doesn't like white chocolate.
Adults received a mince pie and choice of a plastic cup of orange juice or a plastic shot glass of Sherry.
When he came through, Santa was there, very quick chat and gone with about a minute. Having supplied name and age with reserved seating I expected he would have been given at least that information to personalise the 'deluxe' experience, but sadly not. He came back for a photo later for no more than 2 minutes. Again, Santa himself was a jolly chap, but blink and you miss it.
Daughter was excited for her gift and likes it so that's the main thing there although they cost £5. Hate to think what the lesser gift would've been on the standard experience.
Between Santa rushing through and then popping back for them to take a photo (that we were not given - maybe we were meant to buy it? Nobody said so we don't know) there was a balloon modeller. She was friendly and at least interacted for a couple of minutes while making a balloon animal.
It was a 'nice' hour, don't get me wrong, but for 2 adults and 1 child the £129 cost seemed totally ridiculous for what we received. Adults charged £15 maximum I would understand. £42 for a mince pie and cheap orange juice.
Overall, great people, rubbish experience. Had much much better Santa experiences for much less. Unfortunately, really cannot recommend and this saddens me as we usually love the railway.

Boxing day lunch on a 1960's railway carriage. First class seats were very comfortable, tables were nicely laid and decorated. Pre ordered lunch, consisted of three courses. Hot, tasty and well presented. Only complaint was Brussels sprouts were overdone. Bottles of wine from £19.00 upwards, but soft drinks, beers and cider also available
The train guard explained where we were going and some of the history of the train and stations. It's a fairly short train trip, so stops at each station and a resevoir.
At Loughborough Station there are refreshments, and a small museum. Steep steps from road down to platform but there is a small lift avaliable

We have been visiting the GCR on it’s Christmas Day Luncheon train for many years. It used to be a top notch afternoon out and one we always enjoyed. Over recent years we have witnessed a slow, continual decline in the quality of the experience. Some issues may seem quite minor, but collectively they make for an increasingly disappointing experience. The most glaringly obvious issue is a lack of staff, and those that were there there were basically kids who had little idea of their required duties. The table appeared to be set quite nicely at first glance, but had really poor quality crackers on them and the carriage was quite chilly, despite it not being that cold outside. The train departed promptly at 1:00 p.m. but it was almost 40 minutes before our starter of a thin slice of cheese on a piece of burnt sourdough bread arrived with a couple of very sad looking salad leaves. The train stops on Swithland viaduct, an ideal spot to have your soup, except we had not even had our starter….! Next we were offered a cold, stale bread roll that was so dry it disintegrated before you could butter it. The soup finally arrived but my wife could not eat it due to an allergy. We had no advanced notice of what the soup would be. The “main event” eventually arrived and we were presented with a single slice of turkey (more like a steak than a sliced roast) with some lukewarm gravy poured over it. The vegetables were really disappointing, no roast potatoes, just a tiny piece of burnt Rösti, (again containing onion which my wife could not eat) almost raw, dry parsnips, and a few soggy sprouts and carrots.
The Christmas pudding portion was tiny and again served with a tepid brandy sauce. A cheese plate came which was very generous indeed, in fact we are pretty sure it was actually meant for a table of 4 not 2, in any case far too much to eat, so a waste really. We tried to order a glass of port to accompany the cheese, but were told “sorry we haven’t got any” We were given a tiny, cold, mince pie and half a cup of coffee as the train arrived back at Loughborough. They came to collect payment for the drinks, (£35 for a bottle of white wine!) and had forgotten to bring us the bill. I was asked how I’d like to pay and said cash, but he proceeded to use the card machine anyway and looked at me blankly when I gave him real money!
No petit fours were offered and no hot drink refills as there used to be.
The start of the meal was extremely slow and the end very rushed as they struggled to get everything out on time.
I don’t like giving poor reviews and am mindful of the difficult times many attractions have had post Covid, but when you charge a hundred Pounds each for lunch (plus drinks) I think it is not unreasonable to expect a good experience. The disappointment is that we have witnessed the gradual decline as in previous years this has been an outstanding afternoon, but has now deteriorated to what can only be described as mediocre at best.
Sadly we will not be returning and I would not recommend this experience.

Ive just come back from attending the winter ‘wonderlights’ train tonight and unfortunately it was terrible. I honestly feel like it was such a massive waste of money and need to say something.
Firstly for some reason, a decision was made to try to cram everyone into two carriages. We had paid for a table seat with two blank seats so we can enjoy a more intimate experience so why are we now being told to go in with other people? We decided to remain as per our booking in coach D but were told that the lights inside the carriage will remain on. Again, doesn’t make sense and wasn’t explained.
Onto the actual journey itself, well I’ve seen more lights at my local petrol station. Where were all these wonder lights? I saw the various wooded areas and fields being lit up by the train so was that it? No decorations or displays?
You announce a ‘Christmas Fair’ coming up on the right hand side which sounded promising, but it’s just an abandoned carousel all shut down. What is there to look at?
Reindeers grazing on the field was announced next; I counted about 6 again not lit up, just strewn across a hillside.
On the return journey, we pulled up to Rothley station and was told that we would remain there for 20 minutes. Feel free to take pictures came over the radio…..of what may I ask? The one reindeer on the platform? The elves tried their best to liven the mood with a rendition of holly jolly Christmas.
We were still wondering when the hot drinks trolley was going to make an appearance given the menus on the table. Needless to say this never appeared either. Back on the train and we were home, finally.
£50 to sit on a train and stare at some woodland vaguely lit up by the light coming off the train.
Sorry but what a con, I won’t be returning.

Large free car park right next to Rothley station with lovely cafe and picnic tables outside. Large free car park next to Quorn station. Small free car park next to Leicester North.
Free street parking at Loughborough.
Just wondered are there toilet facilities on the South Yorkshireman steam train?

There are - the ones on the platform are bigger, but you will find them on the actual train too. Hope that helps
