We were taken to this memorial by our tour driver, and after visiting we were surprised that it does not have a greater profile. It is a memorial to the HMS Royal Oak that was sunk nearby in 1939 by a German submarine, resulting in a massive loss of life. The actual wreck is an official war grave, whilst the memorial consists of a garden and building. The whole memorial site is quite understated but excellently maintained. The building contains details of the disaster and memorial messages, many personally from family members of those lost. It acts as a sombre reminder of the results of armed combat, and is definitely worth a visit.

Recommend a visit if at Scapa Beach. Good information boards and Interesting memorabilia in the hut and a very poignant list of all who died that brought home the scale of the loss of life.

If you have driven over the Churchill Barriers and seen ship remains do go down to the beach at Scapa near Kirkwall and see this memorial. It is very sad and touching. A small garden remembering those who died and then a wooden hut filled with poppy wreaths and some more information. Lovely beach and hard to associate with so much loss of life. Small parking area

We always visit this poignant memorial the HMS Royal Oak. It is getting a bit tired now, the garden is untidy and the hut where the displays are kept are old. I believe OIC are going to renovate which is badly needed.

These gardens are in memory of the 834 men of HMS Royal Oak who lost their lives when the pride of the British Navy was torpedoed by the German submarine U-47, in their daring raid into Scapa Flow. The gardens contains a grey granite obelisk on stepped plinth with the commemoration in incised, another monument with a sculpture of the badge of the Royal Oak and a memorial room with the roll of honour for all the fallen.

My wife and I took a day trip by NorthLink ferry from Scrabster (Thurso) to Stromness (Orkney) during our Scotland road trip in September-October 2021. We took our car, and toured the main island and over the Churchill barriers.
The Royal Oak ship's bell is in the church in Kirkwall (see my photograph). There is a separate memorial site down near Scapa Flow. It comprises artefacts from the wreck and a hut with mementos, cards and poppies. There is also a plaque commemorating Lt Edward Dunning, the first to land an aircraft on the deck of a ship at sea.
HMS Royal Oak is a war grave to the 833 sailors who lost their lives in a German U-boat attack in October 1939. Of course, it is a sad place, but a site of great historical interest.

Scapa beach is great but not just for its sand, The memorial and adjacent museum are moving and very well put together. We drink Scuttle gin on the beach as a toast to those who gave their lives, Thanks to those who keep this place so well.

This little memorial gardens and exhibition commemorates the loss of 833 crew on the Royal Oak in October 1939. Very sad and it's hard to look out on the beautiful scenery with such a tragedy in mind.

Staring out across the water, it's hard to picture the way it would have looked back in 1939 - the tragedy of the sinking of the Royal Oak is something that should never be forgotten

Is there a memorial garden where My wife can scatter her mums ashes, she lost her brother on the Royal Oak, he went off to war and she never saw him again, her dying wish was to have her ashes scattered where she could be near to her brother.

Hello, Would I be able to get a copy of the photo in the cabinet of my great uncle F.W.Annell one of the many boy sailors who perished on that night. I visited the memorial on 1 July 2016 and took pictures but unfortunately they are blurred. I would be very happy to pay any costs. I was very moved and impressed by the whole memorial site. I hope you can help me. Regards Jill.
