I visited Gibside many years ago, and went back this time to see the artists in residence. I asked the young lady who sold me the ticket which was the easiest route to the stables, as I am not able to walk far. She gave me a map and said "follow this path". What she did not tell me was that it was a good half mile or more and all uphill! I made it to the stables, but had to sit for some time to recover half way there. The artists were so welcoming, and gave me somewhere warm to sit and regain my strength for the long walk back. They also told me there is a mini-bus but only on certain days! Had the young lady in the ticket office mentioned this and the gradient, I would have returned on a day it was running, and saved myself a painful slog. The stables was lovely (though the stables cafe was closed) but other than that nothing seems to have changed at Gibside in many years. It is still rather a soulless place. There are lovely (free) elsewhere - definitely not worth the admission cost.

Always a great place for walking the dog, beautiful In any weather. Really enjoyed visiting the art studios at the stableblock and chatting to the artists. What a fantastic way to use the spaces up there and a great addition to Gibside.

Lovely afternoon out with the dog. Fab little coffee shop at the stables which dogs are allowed in
..then at the side is the off lead enclosure. Rosie the retriever thoroughly enjoyed this. Will return soon.

Visit with my daughter in law and grand child 3rd Jan, nice friendly greeting on a cold damp day, provided best route for the pram. Nice walk good offer for children and walkers. Toilets warm and clean.
Cafe very friendly and warm love the calories on the product shame nothing light, pleased to walk off the scone. Well done.

We went yesterday with 2 grandchildren aged 13 and 7 for Christmas at Gibside.
We all enjoyed it thought it was great the displays along the trail were great.
Good facilities along the way toilets etc all clean.
We enjoyed the food at the end of trail and some good rides for smaller children.
The only negative was when we got our food there was plenty of seating, but it could of done with a few outside heaters especially as we had kids and it was really cold.
We were well wrapped up for the elements but the kids felt the cold when we stopped for food.
Otherwise it was a great experience and we will definitely go back..

We have never been to the 'Christmas at Gibside' light experience before but we will definitely go again. We chose a very early slot on the 8th December and the sleet was stair rods! We were quite apprehensive about slipping however they had rubber mats in areas that required them and concrete pathways everywhere else. ( Would not like to push a Wheelchair round but Pushchairs were managing quite well!) My mobility is not brilliant but once we slowly walked around the displays you quite forgot everything else. I was transported into a magical world. The tasteful displays and music were brilliant and Father Christmas looked so splendid I wanted to cry. There were toilets and eateries in three places around the site and a lovely food / Helter Skelter hub at the end. Well worth every penny if you need cheering up. It took us about an hour to slowly walk around. I would like to point out that there is a steep bank to negotiate when you first enter but there are rails and we just took it easy.

Had a superb visit to gibside this week. My mum and I went for an autumn afternoon outing and had a great time! Firstly the cafe is great. We both had soup and a cheese scone, both of which were delicious. We then went on a horticultural landscape tour of the park. It gave the history of gibside told from a landscape viewpoint. Our guide was Clive. What can I say about Clive? Clive was engaging, funny and exceptionally knowledgeable and provided a wonderful tour of the estate. He claims not to be an historian, but his explanation and demonstration of the landscaping and its relationship with the life and development of gibside provided a different kind of tour which was refreshing and really well delivered. Can't recommend his tour highly enough! A great afternoon was had and will definitely visit again in the spring

We hadn't realised that this place existed until it was mentioned in passing by a volunteer at another NT site. Other than it being a large expanse of parkland we didn't know what to expect. We arrived at 11am and the main car park was almost full, the overflow had a sign saying it was closed but in fact it was being used. It is quite a steep climb from the car park to the entrance so not great for anyone with walking difficulty but there was mention of a courtesy bus. We had a cup of tea on arrival in the basic cafe and had a look at the excellent guide book that we purchased. My wife can't walk too far so we made up our own route which was a little shorter than the routes in the guide. We saw all the main buildings including the impressive chapel and had lunch in the stables cafe where there was only one member of staff so quite a long queue. We ended up walking to the column then down to the river which is a lovely walk but you have to climb up a steep slope and steps to get back up to the walled garden. This was a delight especially the apples that were plentiful and people were encouraged to pick them off the trees! We had a great day especially as the weather was sunny and mild. My wife managed ok with her mobility but anyone who cannot walk far might really struggle as distances are large and paths are steep in places. I did see a mobility scooter so one may be available for hire? We had tea and a scone and left at 4pm so had a full day here.

I'm not sure what I expected when visiting Gibside, but I do know that gardens were supposedly featured. What I did NOT know was that this was once the residence of the Queen Mother when she was a child. The remains of the manor still stand, in ruins, on the estate.
There is a lovely walled garden to explore upon entrance. And, many paths to walk around the estate. We did just that, exploring various paths, one leading up to the tall statue upon the hill, which was built in the mid 1700's. It was built by Bowles himself, to impress upon the world just how great he was.
At the end of the two and a half mile walk stands a lovely chapel, which is still used today for worship and weddings. Inside was a memory book to the Queen, as we were in attendance during her mourning period. We felt it was quite a honor to be among those who signed the book.
Certainly a very pleasant afternoon.
There is a cafe for those caring to have some refreshment while visiting.

Hi there, yes entrance to the estate is via a road and ramped access. Parts of the grounds/gardens are scooter friendly. Hope this helps.

Partly you can definitely come along in a scooter, not everywhere accessible though

You can get the 45/46 or 47 from Newcastle, Consett, or Metrocentre to Rowlands Gill, and there are signs and directions to Gibside from there, or use the map too.

Guibside is a very family friendly property. There are lots of play areas and for 12 to 14's their is the rope course and nature's playscape (obstical) areas. I would also recommend checking the NT website for free daily activity's especially in the summer!
