‪Stunning & fascinating location‬
بمفردك • سبتمبر 2021
‪Really enjoyed my visit here, absolutely stunning location, well signposted one way system around the woods.
Ample parking, due to covid restrictions you need to book online in advance this is really easy to do, although overpriced for the experience £8 adult.
Upon entering the woods it was initially very busy & crowded, with children screaming, if going inwould recommend going on a weekday when it is apparently quieter!
Once further on in the woods found it alot more peaceful & able to enjoy the experience much more.‬

‪Sunny September Sunday‬
زوجان • سبتمبر 2021
‪You have to book online to visit. We went on a sunny September Sunday. We loved it. But I don’t think it’s for small children. You need to be fairly fit to get round and lots of steps up and down and uneven terrain. Wear walking boots and if raining, make sure you are in wellies. It’s around 5000 steps round whole way (there are shorter routes if you want). About 1 hr 15 mins ish I’d say.
Couple of other things….. toilets…. Not signed well with girls or boys…. Tiny sign writing. Girls to the left!
Bins…. We had a tea and cake after our walk. Couldn’t see a bin anywhere? I didn’t mind taking my rubbish home but I was surprised.
It’s a fair weather trip out I’d say. Enjoy!‬

‪Beautiful area of ancient woodland to visit for a few hours‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪As a young fan of BBC's "Merlin", since the show aired back in 2008, I have been really desperate to visit Puzzlewood as I was fully aware of it being a prime filming location for many of the woodland scenes. Finally, at the age of 23, and 9 years after the final episode aired, I was able to visit whilst on holiday in the local area with my parents for the week.

We decided to visit outside the school holidays to avoid busy crowds and booked a slot online which was simple to do and got a QR code sent to us via email for when we arrived.

Our Sat Nav unfortunately decided to send us down the "scenic" route, so I would like to mention to make sure if you visit, you take Bream Road from Lydney onto the B4231 and then the B4228 (assuming you are approaching from the A48 of course!)

There is ample parking on the field near the entrance of the woods and due to Covid at the time of writing, there is a one way system around the woods.

There are a few farm animals as you approach the entrance to the woods and the initial pathway is lined with a rubber matting.

Once you are in the woods, it is peaceful and quiet although worth mentioning that the rubber matting disappears.

I'm not sure why so many people have said in their reviews that there was no warning of slippery or potentially dangerous conditions once in the woods - this is mentioned in the FAQ section of the website under "what footwear should I wear" and the supervisor at the entrance who scanned our QR booking code gave us plenty of warning about the paths and steps being slippery.

My Mum has arthritis and requires walking poles to walk long distances - and whilst we all proceeded with caution, we managed okay and she said how much she enjoyed the experience.

A lot of the steps in the forest path are accompanied by tree branch banisters for something to hang on to - although these aren't present on all steps, they are there on most.

We recognised a few points from Merlin on the way round, including Morgana's Hovel from series 4 and the bridge where Warwick Davis' character allowed Arthur, Merlin and Gwaine to pass and I'm sure fans of other shows & films like Doctor Who and Star Wars would recognise some areas of the forest too.

As we were fortunate to visit on a fairly quiet day too, we did see some wildlife on the quietest areas including some small mice and a song thrush bird which was an extra treat.

The cafe served a small variety of light lunches and snacks, and there were plenty of benches available both in the sun and shade on the premises.

For anyone who enjoys a quiet walk through some woodland, with the potential to see some wildlife and locations from TV series and films, I would recommend Puzzlewood.

I can however understand why this might be unsuitable for toddlers or young children due to steep steps, so worth doing your research prior to visiting.‬

‪Perhaps unique, but missing the obvious‬
أغسطس 2021
‪It is a lovely piece of woodland, perhaps unique in it formation from iron workings and erosion. The place is somewhat low-key but very well organised and friendly. Certainly worth a visit at a moderate price and some nice photo opportunities when you are exploring. While booking slots are used, time in the woods is not limited so you wander around to your hearts content, even have your lunch in there is you wanted. HOWEVER, the owners are missing the very obvious point here which is the woods many uses for filming. It is referred to in marketing, it is alluded to on the explorers leaflet (to look out for stormtroopers, wizards etc), but there is absolutely nothing about the film and TV spots within the woods themselves. The explore guide has you seek out interesting spots or objects around the pathways, but NOTHING about Star Wars, Dr.Who, Secret Garden etc. I can only imagine the reason for not flagging these points in the woods with a really good information/image board is to prevent hordes gathering for photo opps at those points .. but really, that is such a draw it should be showcased.‬

‪No puzzles in this wood just a woodland walk through an old iron mine‬
العائلة • سبتمبر 2021
‪We travelled from Cardiff and it wasn't worth the travel or expense.

This place is great if you want to walk in the woods. It has lots of old iron works but zero puzzles and lots of wooden chairs and benches made out of old fallen trees.

You get given a sheet of paper to identify said benches to identify but you can't really call these a puzzles!

We have all these types of woods near to where we live so not worth the travel.

This place needs to rename itself as there aren't any puzzles and it's just a nice, short walk through a woodland to identify rustic things made out of fallen trees.

Quite disappointed really.

Gets some real puzzle activities or stop calling yourselves puzzlewood - printed activity sheets just don't cut it.

Enjoyed a great coffee shop inside to visit and enjoy.‬

‪unreal experience‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪Naturally beautiful landscape. The wood is stunning, and quite uncommercial in that you are left to explore. We went on an overcast day so not many other visitors, which helped. It's a pity that areas are fenced off and things have been screwed into these ancient trees, but the walkways are well-made and the whole area is amazing, quite magical and we all filled our phones with photos! I would have liked more info, especially about it's role in various moves, maybe all this is in the app you can download? I wouldn't know. There was a kiosk checking tickets and another for teas, otherwise no amenities, all in all quite unspoilt.‬

‪Beautiful but overpriced and overcrowded‬
العائلة • أغسطس 2021
‪Lovely bit of woodland but sadly it was not a magical experience.
There are hourly slots for entry, but apart from that, no control over the amount of people entering at the same time, meaning you might walk into the woods together with large groups of badly behaved, screaming kids and uninterested parents, like we unfortunately did. When you show your ticket, there weren't any rules given (i.e. no screaming, running, vandalising), which apparently some children and their parents/guardians might have needed. The woods themselves are very pretty and atmospheric, in particular the first part, but sadly this was not enjoyable due to the above and having to queue for everyone else's selfies. The paths are narrow, we felt rushed around and there was no sense of politeness or basic courtesy from other adults.
When we were about half way through, the crowds dispersed a little as there are different paths that you can take, which felt like a relief (although we could still hear the screams in the distance. No idea why the adults in charge didn't tell the children to behave or stop screaming at the top of their voices..).
There were some nice benches, archways and natural sculptures around, but sad to see some teenagers ripping the coins out of the back of a wooden crocodile... Again
So a partly rushed and uncomfortable walk through the woods, for a hefty £20 for two adults and a toddler.... If you're a fan of movies, are able to come during the day when there are no school holidays and have spare cash, I'd recommend it. Otherwise, no.‬

‪Beautiful walk in an ancient woodland‬
أغسطس 2021
‪Lovely walk in stunning ancient woodland. My little boy absolutely loved it and was very sad when we cameo to the end! Walking boots recommended as it was muddy, but that was part of the charm. We will visit again.‬

‪Not worth the money‬
أغسطس 2021
‪Not suitable for those with mobility issues or young children. There were queues throughout the woodland which took away the excitement. There were restrictive footpaths which were very slippy under foot and the play area was underwhelming. Apart from that, the woodland was nice.‬

‪Absolutely magical‬
زوجان • أغسطس 2021
‪Anyone doubting whether or not they should visit doubt no further !!! It’s a magical place full of beauty and fun. My daughter loved finding all the different shaped trees and stones ( you’re given a leaflet of things to look out for on entry) plenty of different twists and turns to keep the inquisitive mind occupied. Lovely little cafe selling food and ice creams plus a small play area and farm animals. Please visit !!! It’s the hidden gem of the Forest of Dean :)‬
