Peaceful visit to an interesting church. I walked the labyrinth which is inside the church. The church has boards telling visitors about the history of the church.

My OH and I visit churches and cathedrals wherever we are in the world and we were charmed by St Mary’s. No one was around to ask nor were there any leaflets which was sad but having walked Chartres labyrinth it was quite moving to walk St Mary’s too and to quietly reflect.

We visited twice while staying nearby. The first time we had a peaceful wander around the church; looking at the huge font and the labyrinth. The second time the local community orchestra were rehearsing so we sat and listened.
This is a large church that is obviously well loved and well maintained.

A largely medieval parish church with Victorian restoration/alteration. Well cared for by the local community.

St Mary's Church with its very characteristic of English churches square tower with flat roof, is just few minutes walk from Barnard Castle, near roundabout where Horse Market and Newgate meets. Original edifice, founded by Barnard de Balliol around 1130, in form of oblong, one nave church with long chancel undergone many changes throughout its history. Of original Norman church only North Aisle arcade left. Around 1300 church's tower (constructed thirty years earlier) was topped with spire, and South Arcade with pointed arches and octagonal pillars was added. In second half of 14th century the North Transept and chantry chapel were built. Its present form and size church reached between 1477-1485, when, on the order of Richard, Duke of Gloucester and Lord of Barnard Castle, was widened and extended. After the Dissolution of Monasteries in 1539 church slowly fell into negligence, and by 1780 was in really wretched condition. At that time no paved floor existed, and church was very damp and dark. Restoration works started in 19th century and were carried out until second half of 20th century. During renovation works of 19th century galleries were removed, nave floor was lowered, organ loft was built, stained glass windows were inserted, old tower was demolished and new one was erected, and pews were installed. In 20th century the organ was removed to the South Transept and then, in 2003, to the West end of the church. Also, choir screen was removed, and font was moved from tower's porch. and re-roofing taken place. Like I've mentioned before, overall form of St Mary's Church is typical of English churches, however, there's still few interesting details, that has been preserved from earlier centuries to be seen there. Therefore, if one's got enough of spare time I would recommended to go there and try to find them. Especially, that it's completely free and on the way to the Bowes Museum.

Wonderful and peaceful medieval church. Purchased a DVD about the history of the church and a couple of postcards which acted as lovely mementos. The medieval carved tomb stone inside of the church was also great to see!

For us the highlight of this church was the stained glass windows. Convenient to access from Barnard Castle.

Cette église date pour ses parties actuelles des XIIe( porte romane)-XVe s. L'intérieur, restauré au XIXe s., offre une belle décoration gothique. On peut aussi voir un dépôt lapidaire médiéval.

A centre of historical interest and active worship. The church has a number of modern aspects and the labyrinth is an active piece of worship and contemplation. Many links to the Balliols and to Richard III. A good collection of ancient carved stone memorials and many more recent ones on the walls with Crimea War links, etc. A very unusual font and its pleasing that so many ancient features have been retained. The Queen Margaret Chapel is set aside for private prayer. A good supply of historical guide books and a list of all the burials with their inscriptions.
