Lovely garden but smaller than expected. Enjoyed the hour and a half we spent walking around. The Maze was fun. Clean toilets in the cafe.

We are Royal Oak Members and we decided to stop at Crook Hall Gardens en-route from The Borders to Yorkshire, to break up the trip. It was raining when we arrived, but we still managed to don our rain gear and walk through the multiple gardens, all of which had various stages of flowers in bloom.
There were quite a lot of varieties of which I was unfamiliar, It really was a delightful experience walking among the plants with the Hall standing in the background.
The interior of the hall doesn't have much to offer, other than the fact that the structure is in its original condition. We were told that the trust is planning on refurbishing the building that stands next to the trust, and that they will decorate it according to the period in which it originally stood.
The back of the venue has a large pond, and also a working vegetable garden that is rather large as well. There are views of the city from the Shakespeare garden, which is rather cleverly arranged.
Well worth an afternoon stroll if you are in the area.
One thing of note: be sure to follow the directions listed on the National Trust Site for Crook Hall & Gardens. It will seem confusing otherwise. There is a very large car park adjacent to the gardens, with a Pay and Display counter. National Trust members park for free.

Gate house cafe must be the worst national trust cafe in the country. Visited at lunchtime. No sandwiches a few sausage rolls and pasties sitting in a warming cabinet. Some scones 4 small pieces of cake 2 cookies 2 shortbread biscuits and 2 tiny pieces of rhubarb flapjack on the counter. Not many customers pre national trust cafe was excellent. We went to the local garden centre for food.

Within easy reach of the city centre and with its own car park. The gardens are on a slope so may be difficult for some. The maze is worth trying out too.
When we visited it was between seasons, so I am sure it is very pretty later in the summer.

A very lovely garden, split into many different sections. These reflect the long history of the buildings since medieval times.

Stopped off here in April for a bite to eat and a walk around the gardens. Never visited before and wish we lived nearer because the gardens are beautiful. They must change so much over the year. They hyacinths were in full bloom and absolutely gorgeous. The greenhouse was full of seedlings and the daffs lines every path.
We had a cup of tea and a snack in the coffee shop which was clean and warm. All the staff were friendly and we enjoyed our visit.

Delightful even in cold winter. The gardens are laid out to make the most of the design as well as the planting. A very warm and welcoming cafe too.

I am so pleased that Crook Hall Gardens are open again, I was not aware of this. I live in the south of England and visited the gardens in late summer 2017, when in Durham.
I thought the gardens were very pretty and enjoyed my lunch there as well!
Do visit these gardens when in Durham, not very large but interesting with views of the cathedral and castle. Highly recommended.

We have never been here before and we were very surprised by the extent of, variety of and quality of the gardens. Even now there is plenty of colour. There is parking and a very pleasant basic cafe. The gardens are a mere 10 minute stroll from the Market Place. Allow an hour here.

Lovely small garden. Wonderfully helpful staff. NT food though has been a let down since the start of COVID surely it’s time for the old standards to come back.

Do they still have the delicious scones served here in the past or is it now only National trust only food ?
Does Crook Hall still host Weddings?

No, the National Trust isn't hosting weddings at Crook Hall Gardens.
how long does it take to look all around the place, is it a full day out or just an hour or two? Is photography allowed in the house?

Photography can be taken in the house, the visit should take a couple of hours, it's worth going on a dry day to make the most of the wonderful gardens

What is difference between classic afternoon tea and ploughman’s afternoon tea
Janette W
مقاطعة ديرهام, UK37 مساهمة
The ploughman's afternoon tea replaces the sandwiches with pork pie, cheese & crackers plus scotch egg, the cakes and scones are the same as the standard afternoon tea. Your also are given the option to have a bottled Durham brewery beer in place of the normal Prosecco. Hope this helps.

Do you have anything on over October half term. I intend to visit with my 10 year old son on Sunday 23 October.
Also, are there public transport links between yourselves and the Durham Marriott on Old Elvet?

According to their website there is nothing on that week. Not sure about buses but it's all central Durham so it's walkable...
Do you rent rooms for an overnight stay?
