Visited Finchale Priory and we were given a tour by Geoff from English Heritage. He was very informative and showed us around the Priory ruins explaining how each section had been used by the monks and Prior in 12th and 13th century. We then went into the cafe for some delicious homemade soup. We thoroughly enjoyed our day.

The remains of the abbey are fantastic, and in such a glorious setting by the River Wear. It was lovely to walk around them. However, a few things would have improved the visit:
There were no information boards. A plan of the priory at its height and its history would have been useful, and boards detailing what the rooms were (if known). A few walls had a little plaque, but for the most part the visitor was left in the dark.
Children were climbing all over the walls with absolutely no appreciation or respect of the monument they were visiting, which was sad to see. Its not a playground. Again, more information would have helped parents to interpret what they were actually seeing.
Admission is free, but there is a charge for parking, which is fine. But there was no information about how much that fee was until you leave! And payment can only be made by card, with no receipt. I don't mind paying the £4 to park, but I like to know in advance how much I'm going to be stung.
So, a great site, worth visiting, but could be so much better. I think most people just went along for somewhere for a nice picnic.

Thank you for your review.
I have made the relevant people aware of your comments regarding information boards and hope this can be resolved in the near future.
The car park itself is not managed by English Heritage but by the nearby caravan park however I have passed on your comments and hope something can be done about this too.

Beautiful, magical place, and the drizzle the day we went intensified the green of the grass and the dark gray of the stones. The low traffic and free admission made it especially enjoyable.

Hylton Castle is not too far from Finchale Priory and is another free site that is well worth a visit if you get the opportunity!

Still enjoyable but the maximum stay time for those with cars means folk can no longer go for a full, relaxing day to see the heritage site

In regards to the car park, unfortunately this is not managed by English Heritage as it lies outside of our guardianship area. The car park is instead managed by the neighbouring caravan park. We have not been made aware of the short-stay time restrictions imposed so thank you for letting us know. We shall discuss this with the caravan park.

I was after a day out with my family only to find two hour stay and 4 pound parking charge. As it was my first visit, I had a good look around and to find a bank near the parking was full of weeds. The wood huts near the gates and the surrounding fences have never been painted in years. The bridge is dropping to bits, and looks like it has never been looked after for years. I did notice a fat guy on a buggy been very aggressive with someone. 4 pound for two hours, don’t think so.

Thank you for your review. We are disappointed to hear about the overall experience of your visit, but we appreciate your feedback and comments.
In regards to the car park, unfortunately this is not managed by English Heritage as it lies outside of our guardianship area. The car park is managed by the neighbouring caravan park, however we endeavour to let visitors know about the charges via our website and handbook. We have not been made aware of the short-stay time restrictions imposed. We shall discuss with the neighbouring caravan park. Our website will be updated accordingly.
Similarly, the bridge and the huts lie outside of our guardianship area and do not fall under our management responsibilities, however we shall discuss your comments with the stakeholders.
For future clarity, the English Heritage guardianship area is within the fencing around the priory monument.

£4 to park your car. You get through the barrier, which falls behind you...to find then that there's nowhere to park as all areas are closed off to cars. There is a small area Infront for about 4 cars...but that was full. No one around to ask about parking, so we had to turn around and leave...but then had to pay £4 to get out. That's called exploitation and it's wrong!

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear about your recent disappointment with parking at Finchale Priory.
I have looked into this and the parking is not managed by English Heritage but by the nearby Caravan Park. In addition to the four spaces you mention there is further parking to the left which should always be available. The tearoom for the Caravan Park is usually open, but on quieter days may close early. We are sorry there was no-one to help and direct you to a parking space and that you weren't able to enjoy this beautiful site.

Walked to Finchale with friends from Durham city centre, was a very easy walk through the woods (and also the prison!) and then down past the lovely river to the priory. It's a beautiful location with the river and the sloped hills on the other side and a great place to take a break, have food or relax.
The priory itself doesn't contain much anymore as its all largely eroded with time, just a nice walk and place to take a stop but not a main attraction in itself if that makes sense. Still, I don't think it's advertised as such and we had a very pleasant time.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your visit to Finchale.
Finchale Priory was founded in 1196 on the site of the hermitage of St Godric, a retired sailor and merchant, who settled here after a life of adventure and travel. The priory was an outpost of Durham Cathedral and functioned as a holiday retreat for the monks of Durham until its suppression in 1538.
The story of Finchale can be read in its surviving remains, from St Godric's original church and tomb through the 13th century priory and its later rebuilding.
We hope you get the opportunity to visit more English Heritage sites.

A very impressive site with extensive remains to view and a lovely setting next to the River Wear.
It should be noted that the car parking charge is now £4 and requires contacless card payment when exiting.
As others have stated, there is very little information, or identification of individual buildings, to aid interpretation of the site. Viewing previous comments on this site, this issue seems to be a common complaint that has been ignored by English Heritage over the years. I have instead bought, on line, a guide book and intend to return better informed on my next visit
Reading through the previous reviews I was slightly disappointed not to meet "Angry Man". Could it be arranged for him to be on site to berate and abuse casual members of the public for the entertainment of future visitors?

If you ever visit one priory make sure it`s this one. An absolute cracker. I parked on Cocken road and walked down the steps (about 100) and across the bridge to find this beautiful ruined priory.

English Heritage have let the profiteers ruin this site. Used to be a great day out, playing in the river with the family, as have done done for over 40 years and having a picnic. Now they have taken the picnic benches out, limited your stay to 2 hours. This family day out has now been ruined. I won't be going back!

Is there a walking path to reach the Priory from Durham? We’d like to walk there, but not if it means walking along a busy road with no pavement.

We took a buggy and struggled with that! Depends on the disability. If wheelchair bound I would say no as there is a lot of stones to clamber over etc

Is any part wheelchair accessible for a picnic

Good afternoon Tom
around the car park area is all flat with good roads and 2 inclines the Priory is not suitable for wheel chair access. You can enjoy the beautiful views over looking the river and watching the local wild life

Tony, I'm afraid your nearest Bus Stop to Finchale Priory Touring Park would mean a minimum of 35 minutes (walking fairly briskly) to the stop on Finchale Avenue, close to HMP Frankland.
The service is run by Arriva North East, number 62 which takes 15mins to reach Durham City centre. Timetables can be found here: arrivabus, north-east
As for Cycling to Durham, there is a Blog on the constructioncode blogspot, ref: finchale-priory-to-durham-fantastic
This is from 2013, but I am sure it is still relevant.
Might I point out that the park where you are booked has these (and more up to date) details available upon request. Not a criticism, simply added information.
Speaking of which, might I suggest the following for details of local transport for anywhere in the UK:
transport-points, UK
Might I add the following site, which may be of some benefit:
britainexpress, ref: counties, durham,abbeys, finchale.
(I am sure you can follow these clues to the relevant Internet sites. I simply did not wish to fall-foul of the Posting-guidelines.)
Finally, may I wish you a wonderful holiday at a beautiful, scenic and peaceful area.
Dave Rowley.
