Brilliant views, particularly at sunset. You can see for miles and it’s a veeeery steep walk up from the carpet, so be aware if you have small ones or old ones - might not be the right choice for that.

This monument is currently closed due to Covid restrictions but don’t let that put you off. From the base of the monument you get brilliant views of East Lothian. It is a short and not very strenuous walk from the car park. It’s a small car park which can fill up quickly.

Small car park and an uphill walk leads you to some fantastic views all over east Lothian even better if you can get up the tower, the views are amazing on a clear day

Was directed to this place by a good friend living in Hawick, from the carpark it's a tricky to get to the base, i wouldn't reccomend small children going as there is a steep banking and when wet very slippery, good sturdy shoes are a must, this is not for the faint hearted and you definitely require a torch as the only light comes through the small windows, wouldn't reccomend you go here at night, climbing the stairs are not difficult but folk with health issues is a big no, once at the top its smiles all around with a 360 degree view of the beautiful surrounding area, descending can be as tricky as climbing but as long as you take your time it is all worth the exercise

Can be seen from miles around. A steep but short ascent to the monument. 132 dark & narrow steps to the top. A torch will be useful if unsure about descending in the dark (occasional light from the slit windows. Pick a cloudless sky for best photo results

When in East Lothian you can see Hopetoun Monument from miles around. There is a car park & moderate walk up to the tower itself. This is a good climb (but take a torch particularly on a cloudy day). From the top there are some great views right across to Fife. Not everyone does this when they visit therefore you would also be doing something different!

The monument, one of a pair, the second being in Fife, is visible from far off standing on atop Byre's Hill above Haddington on the B1343 off the A6317. If you stand on the North Bridge in Edinburgh and look east it can be seen.
An inscription tells us that it was "...erected to the memory of the Great and Good John, Fourth Earl of Hopetoun by his affectionate and grateful tenantry..." Presumably his tenants were also pleased to foot the bill?
Standing so prominently as it does, the 360 degree view from the top is spectacular. There is a small car park at the foot of the hill and woodland walk/climb to the base of the tower.
The gated entrance leads to a set of stairs which in places are worn down. There are NO LIGHTS on the spiral stairs, so bring a torch, otherwise the stairs are illuminated by slits in the tower wall - its well worth the climb.
Note that in the spring time birds are known to nest on the stairs... it may be unwise to climb during nesting season, you may get a surprise as you climb.
The top has signs with illustrations of what and where you are looking at.
Although this a place great to explore it is not suitable for those with limited movement, its a bit of a climb.
