What a lovely place to visit for 1/2 hr or a few hours. Free, but donations welcome & why wouldn’t you to support their great work in caring for these abandoned & abused donkeys & Shetland ponies.
Only wish some of the staff we met were a bit more friendly & offered a ‘hello’

Spent a lovely morning wandering between the barns and paddocks. It’s so lovely to be able to get close to the donkeys and give them some scritches and that dogs are allowed also - Olivia took a liking to our little dog poking her head through the fence to give him a good sniff! Being with the donkeys is so calming. Lovely little gift shop and a fabulous cafe - good coffee and great cakes! Will definitely visit on our next trip over. Thank you for caring for all the donkey friends.

I have visited the Island on many occasions but this is the first time I have visited the donkey sanctuary; truthfully I never knew it exited until a friend went there a few weeks back!
What a truly remarkable place. The donkies are beautiful, so well-looked after, cared for and loved by all the staff and volunteers at the sanctuary. The gorgeous animals were so friendly and inquisitive, I managed to get quite a few selfies with them and several decided to photobomb my pictures as they wanted in on the act as well!! I visited in early February which was a great time as the crowds of tourists just weren't there so got more individual time with the donkies.
The onsite restaurant was wonderful, offering great food at excellent prices. Superb value for money.
Entry to the sanctuary is free which is astounding in this day and age. The suggestion of a donation is praiseworthy and I hope that every single visitor does make a contribution towards this worthwhile cause. I must admit I did make a donation at the gate, spend loads in the restaurant and in the gift shop and have now come home and set up a monthly donation online - I really do love donkies!!
Keep up the good work, the donkies really do appreciate your care. Good luck with the appeal for the new hospital, hopefully it will become a reality in the not too distant future

My daughter took part in the “care for a donkey” activity yesterday and had a wonderful time! She learnt lots of interesting facts about how to care for them as well as getting a chance to brush and walk a donkey 1:1. The volunteer that helped her was so kind and encouraging and the staff lady was obviously very passionate about her job. It was really fantastic!

Large car park good paths well worth a visit.

I was in donkey heaven for the afternoon!! Absolutely beautiful and if you can gain their trust you do get a donkey cuddle!! Restaurant was lovely, huge portions! Although we made a donation they should charge a couple of quid to help with costs??

An absolutely brilliant place to visit for all ages. The cakes in the cafe are lovely and staff/volunteers so welcoming.

Hi my name is Harvey, also known as the Chip King! I visited the cafe at the Donkey Sanctuary to try their chips. Unfortunately there was no Heinz ketchup. The colour of the chip was 10/10 but it tasted quite bland, however the customer service was fantastic!

This is a voluntary organisation, which is home to over 100 donkeys and Shetland ponies.
Parking is free (large car park) and entry is also free although donations are greatfully received, whatever you can afford.
Definitely make time to visit this place if you are in the area as all donations go towards the running of the sanctuary and the volunteers are doing a great job giving these otherwise unwanted animals a better life.
On arrival, you are given a donkey spotting sheet (an A4 sheet with pictures of all the animals with their names and a box to tick off when you have seen them), a great activity for children and adults alike. You can then wander round the paddocks and barns at your own speed an interact with the animals.
The onsite cafe has a great selection of reasonably priced meals, snacks and cakes plus a variety of hot and cold drinks.
The gift shop is being refurbished so is based upstairs in the cafe at the moment.
There are portable Jennies and Jacks toilets close to the entrance and toilets in the cafe.
They are currently fundraising for an equine clinic on site, for which they now have planning permission. At the moment the animals have to be taken to the mainland for any medical treatment, which is far from ideal.

Hello I hope that you don't mind me contacting you but we are looking at visiting the donkey sanctuary in a few weeks as a surprise for my ill son. I was wondering how you got there (ferry??) and did you stay anywhere nice over night.

I am so sorry, I am new to trip advisor and didn't realise people asked questions. I thought you just reviewed peoples comments. We went by ferry from Portsmouth to Fishbourne. We can recommend the Premier Inn at Sandown. It is really close to everything on the island. Your son will love the donkey sanctuary. I hope your son feels better soon.

How long should I allow for a visit here? am doing an itinery for a day out and will have two grandchildren with me, eldest 11yrs.

You will probably be shown round (we were as a group) the tour took about an hour but it was wet so most of this time was spent inside the buildings. I believe that there is a small shop which I did not go into, you can probably get refreshments there. With your grandchildren you will need at least 2 to 3 hours. I’m sure the children will have a great time and take home lots of happy memories.

Looking forward to visiting the sanctuary, and supporting their efforts with a generous contribution.. I know it is a rescue operation, so.....can one avoid heartbreaking stories/photographs of neglect or abuse and just enjoy happy animals and be thankful they are being cared for?

Only after a wet period . The site has a concrete driveway through the main areas ,and there are grass walkways through the paddocks .
Is it open on bank holidays?
Open every day of the year whatever the weather, the only two days that it is closed to the public is christmas day and new years day.
