This was one of the few businesses open on the day we visited and it really provides amusements for the whole family, especially in a town where there is little else for enjoyment and seaside pastimes.
The Amusement Arcade was previously the Grand Pavilion, constructed in 1896 for concert parties and seaside entertainment. The original dome on the square building was covered with tiles resembling silver fish scales. The upper part of the dome however was removed in 1986.
It is a one-level structure used over the years for a variety of entertainments including skating and bumper cars. During WWI it was used to assemble aircraft parts, thereafter never used again as a theatre.
The building has been for sale for years and sadly, there are now plans in the works to demolish this historic treasure and replace it with a multi-storey townhouse complex. The building is not grade listed and it is a huge oversight by the National Trust in not preserving these characterful historic properties, especially one that is now 119 years old!
With iconic businesses such as these closing, I fear that we will only see a further decline of the Ventnor seafront which is presently just a faint glimmer of the bygone Victorian era.
I hope that the new owners rebuild a public-usage area on the ground floor that can be rented out to future businesses and maybe a modern amusement arcade replacement in order to keep the Ventnor esplanade as a vibrant and fun setting for residents and visitors alike.

Our two children loved this amusement arcade on our recent two week holiday in Ventnor. This was one of the places that they wanted to go to again and again for the 2 penny falls! I think we went about five or six times in the end! They loved winning the tickets which could be exchanged for variety of sweets and toys to the value of different points, Sometimes there were keyrings or small gifts in the machines too. You can also buy ice cream from them of assorted flavours. My son liked the blue bubble gum ice cream! Even our dog, Buddy, was made very welcome and it was nice to be able to take him in too. The staff were really lovely. A big thumbs up from us for Gaiety Amusements! Be sure to visit if you're on The Esplanade in Ventnor.
