This wee gem has just re-opened after re-furbishment. Access is from the library which entrance is on the aptly named Scott Skinner Square. The museum is downstairs from the library and pleased to say there is a lift for those with mobility issues.
The museum takes the visitor on a trip through time in Banchory with displays from Pictish times through the reign of Victoria with an exquisite wedding dress and a wonderful Pennyfarthing; dwells on Banchory's own son Scott Skinner the creator of the Strathspey coming practically up to the present with a snowboard belonging to Ben Kilner, Olympic champion and another son of Banchory.
The displays are complemented by excellent interpretation through audio, visual and text, and look out for family activities which are held on a regular basis.
Well worth a visit and it's FREE!

The biggest problem was finding the entrance, eventually resorted to asking in the library for directions, a very small museum with minimal opening hours but if you can find it pop in for a look around.

It starts with the incorrect signage outside and the ambiguous signs on the door, you wonder is the museum here, or through the library, is this just the registrars, do you need an appointment. For info the museum entrance is on the lower level under the library, the 'by appointment only' signs are meant to only refer to the registrars which shares an entrance. It continued with a lady in the museum on a phone who seemed a bit put out by visitors as she broke off to ask us what we wanted , just to look around the museum actually. Some interesting displays, but only a single room.

A little cluttered when we went here, but the staff were helpful and answered all our questions concerning the local history of Banchory. There is a large exhibition commemorating the World War I. The highlight of this is the large exhibit showing life in the trenches. Well worth a visit. Allow 1 to 2 hours to look round.

A small museum, but with an eclectic collection with something to interest just about everyone.
Good display of photographs of Banchory's past including some victorian shots taken by George Washington Wilson.
The Heritage Society case displays leisure activities which were enjoyed by Victorian visitors and are still in vogue today; cycling, hillwalking golf and traditional music....for which this area is famous.
The music theme is continiued with a display about Banchory's own Strathspay King, James Scott Skinner, a musician and dancemaster to the Royal Household.
There are several cases of local archaeology dating from mesolithic through to bronze age.
When I last visted the museum, some heritage society members were constructing a World War 1 trench in a side room! I will be returning to see it's progress as a commemoration of the start of the first world war as the curator explained that the exhibit would change just as the war changed in its 4 years.
Well worth a visit.

bit limited not sure what else to say! Would have hoped to see a bit more local history. No as extensive as we would have expected from somewhere on royal deeside.
