This place has excellent views of the bay and the mountains inland - I actually prefer the views of the old town from lower down the hill around the area of the Church of Our Lady of Remedy as you can see the details better and the view of the town is better framed by the opposite hills from there.
In the morning its an easier climb as its cooler and in shade until mid-morning.
Make sure you take the detours as they provide different aspects and views. For example, there's one place where it isn't clear whether you take the path to the right or the steps to the left. Actually its the path to the right, but the steps to the left lead to an interesting turret and section of walls even if it is a dead-end.
Once at the top, the views are better than the fortress itself, that said, the views aren't fundamentally different from those you get from the higher part of the walk up.
Downside is that on the official route up its now 15 euros per person to walk up for adults. Our kids were free.

Hike was beautiful and breath-taking, in more ways than one. Total hiking time is 1 to 1.5 hours. Distance isn't far, but the climb is steep and the footing uneven. Not recommended for all ages/abilities. View of the city and fortress ruins was fantastic.
I was surprised by the €15/person entry, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the hike. Would have thought twice if going as a group. On the way down, I learned of an alternate route, via the Ladder of Kotor trail which is slightly longer, but less steep, and FREE. I returned on this trail for some diversity and had a very pleasant time. NOTE: Getting into the fort this direction is potentially a risky climb (see picture).
Bring water or buy from the occasional vendor along the way.

One of the 'must do' things while staying in Kotor. We opted to go up via the 'serpentine walk', which is actually a walk up to a different vantage point further up and a small shack cafe but we came down the traditional steps route. Cost is 15 euros, from a rather grumpy and unbothered ticket attendant, which we understand is higher price than in previous years, so I suspect they're milking the tourists while it's tourist season? Anyway, we walked right to the top. There's some info plaques but I think most of the information about this you would be better finding online beforehand, so you're clued up. The views at the top are stonking and there are some little gems, which a lot of people seem to miss, such as the view of a tiny abandoned church through a window in the wall part way down and an abandoned church on the route up near the bottom. Don't go climbing about on the walls (easy to be tempted to do) as there's little real safety railing as such in places and it's a good drop over the side if you lose your footing!

Looking at Kotor this is one of the most praised about activity’s so my wife and I put it on the list. When you get to the start (we started on the left hand side of the old city), you are met by the “boarder control” who have INCREASED THE PRICE TO €15 PER PERSON, not €8. When I asked why, he simply said “that was last year price, new year price is €15”.
After watching a lot of people turn around, we decided it was on the list for a reason. We bit the bullet, paid €30 to do it (almost $60 in our currency and a decent dinner somewhere else, or most of a tank of gas).
The track is okay. For the vast majority of it has stairs on the wall side of the track which are good, and the left side is stone. Some parts of the stone path is laid out nicely and can be walked on, other times it’s loose and not walkable. There are a few times were you can get lost in ruins, as there are about 2 signs to get to the top.
The walk itself is good, it can be challenging at times and takes your breath a bit, but with the stone paths being in poor quality giving way and catching your breath is helpful.
Once at the top, you are greater with a spectacular view, it looks similar to the one at the top of the serpentine road (which is a lot cheaper to access if you drive). The ruins itself is not maintained at all. Rubbish everywhere, graffiti plastered around, bottles wedged in and all sorts. Disappointing from an environmental end as it’s definitely not looked after at all.
We tried a different exit (right hand side) and the €15 gate was there as well. Other tourists were annoyed about the price increase too and walked away. Lots of questions being asked to the gate man about where the money goes and what it is used for, which he didn’t respond to…
Would I do it again, no. Would I recommend it for €15… probably not unfortunately. The €15 needs to go to upkeep and maintenance along with picking up rubbish and making it a cleaner space.

The tour guide said there are 1400 steps to the top. I didn’t count the steps, but it could easily have been 1400, there were a lot of steps. You pretty much need to walk the steps, as the ground is covered in large rocks that are difficult to walk on. You need to pay to walk up. I don’t recall how much, but I think less than 10 euros. The guy at the kiosk also takes credit cards. You also need to save your receipt as it is checked again on the way down – and if you do not have it, you need to pay again. You first reach an old church which was not open when we were there. You then pass ruins from the lower fortress. Go around to the right to find the stairs to continue walking up. You will then reach the second set of ruins. Continue some more to reach the top. When we were there, there was someone who apparently lugged a cooler with soft drinks, juice, and water to the top and was selling them. The views from the top are as amazing as you’d expect them to be. But if you can’t make it the entire way to the top, the views are wonderful all along the intermediate points as well. Be sure to wear good shoes and you really should bring enough water. We enjoyed the hike up and would do it again.

Visiting this castle takes a bit of effort but with time I think most people could make it, and the views are well worth it. Note that this seems to be the same attraction as "Kotor Fortress", or at least it's not clear how they differ. In any event, we spent a little over 2 hours visiting, including about half an hour in the castle exploring and taking photos.
Note that we visited this place via a loop hike using the Ladder of Kotor trail, then entering through a window into the castle. At various times it sounds like this window has been guarded and/or blocked off to avoid that route being used (since it skips the pay station at the start of the climb up). It sounds like that route comes and goes over time as opinions or enforcement policies change, so just be aware that it may or may not be an option during your visit.

To walk/climb the path and stairs up to the Castle is breathtaking, physically! You need to be a bit fit to enjoy it. Don't forget to bring water. An other advice is to do it in the morning - it gets really hot after 11 o'clock.
When you reach the top it's breathtaking, again. But this time it's the view and the scenery that's taking you. Well worth all the effort!

Красивый вид с крепости, но подъем очень тяжёлый, особенно для детей и людей пенсионного возраста. Даже подготовленным людям будет сложно. С собой обязательно берите много воды и головной убор!

An easy start certainly led us on. All we did was: Go Go Go, chasing the view at each turn. Very soon, Kotor's terracotta roofs and the humongous big liners became small and distant. And before you know you almost half way up.
Now, it's the other half that's challenging. Steps were steep, uneven, single filed most way, enough just for one person on it. A few look-out areas to take break -thank God they're there, I saw people's faces: some wanted to sit there and gave up moving. But no, at the end, everyone reached the top. (How do I know? I was one of those sitting down) More up the vista opens wider and bigger. The top boulder platform commands splendid views in all directions. Following the massive cruise ships, one could see The Bay of Kotor out to the Adriatic Sea. It was exhilarating !
It took about 45 minutes up with the last 15 demands a fair bit of effort, but achievable. A couple of local man selling chilled water on trail for 1,2 or 3 euros. There are also easier and longer ways to go up starting at different locations outside the old town if you do some research.

Hello, arrived at the castle by the free way, is it possible to go back down by the paying way without paying it? Thank you in advance for your response.
Bonjour, arrivé au château par le chemin gratuit, est-il possible de redescendre par le chemin payant sans le payer ? Merci d'avance de votre réponse.

Exactly. I confirm Pilounette's answer. We went by the free way, finished the climb to the top by the steps and then took the steps down to the city by the paying way without any trouble. Enjoy !

Да, можно. Въезд в Левчен парк стоит 2 евро. На самом верху у мавзолея есть парковка, правда очень маленькая, но народ помещается.

How do we find the start to this hike once getting off the cruise ship?
كُتب بتاريخ 1 يونيو 2019
It’s start from one of the places in the old town. The best is to ask locals because it’s easy to miss the right stairs. The old town is not large so you won’t lose much time for look for it. Good luck!

So sorry for the delay. There is a gate and a fee to climb but no guide required. There are lots of other travellers. It takes about 90 -100 minutes to go up and back. Longer if you take more breaks!

Robert from the Netherlands was a lot faster than us. We hiked up maybe 2/3 of the way, stopping for a lot of photos and to spend time with the cats, and that took us a good 30-40 minutes. We were on a time crunch so we ended there, but 30 minutes from bottom to top is very optimistic. We're in our mid 50's and in decent shape, but it is a tough high not only due to the incline (which is very steep), but also the slipperiness of the rocks. Worth your time though.

Не опасно. Берите много воды, часто отдыхайте. По крепости можно немного полазить, ребенку может быть интересно. Вылезти через окно крепости (на другую дорогу) - тоже крутой опыт для ребенка))
