‪This is a male monastery of the Cistercian Order, the construction of it was started in 1168. This monastic complex has been expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries, together with a new and monumental cloister in the 18th century,
The church was converted into a parish church and part of the monastic premises sold to private individuals. The whole of it got Classified as a National Monument in the year 1997. And being so, in the year 2002, under a protocol with the Diocese of Lamego, the Portuguese State began the progressive restoration of the buildings and assets.
The integration in the year 2009, into the “Vale do Varosa Project”, together with the “Monastery of São João de Tarouca” and the “Convent of Santo António de Ferreirim”, all this has made it possible to open the space to the public in October 2011. The Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, like its counterpart in São João de Tarouca, is one of the most visited in the Douro and Varosa region.‬

‪The Monastery is fantastic!
I recommend the guided tour! Our guide was great, so friendly and explaining everything!
Unfortunately the Monastery is suffering with humidity inside due to constructions close by, such a pity to see it, such a shame to the authorities to allow it! ‬

‪Bonito Mosteiro‬

‪A entrada para o Mosteiro é feita pela igreja, que é gratuita, indo pela lateral direita, antes de chegar ao altar é a entrada para o Mosteiro, aí paga-se 3 euros por adulto.
É um mosteiro simples, com uma bela sacristia restaurada. No segundo andar tem algumas pinturas incluindo 2 de Grão Vasco. Tem um bonito cluaustro. A igreja é interessante mas não tão bonita como a do Mosteiro de São João de Tarouca.
A visita não dura mais de 40 minutos.
Tem casa de banho no interior.‬

‪Visita à Igreja‬

‪Visitamos apenas a Igreja do Mosteiro, que tem o seu encanto apesar de se apresentar um pouco "despida" e acusar o desgaste do passar dos anos. Pela informação que consultei, em 1834 esta igreja que até então pertencia ao Mosteiro foi convertida em igreja paroquial.‬

‪Pittoreskes Dorf mit beachtlicher Kirche & Kloster‬

‪Salzedas ist den Abstecher unbedingt wert. Das Dorf ist mit seinen verwinkelten Gassen mit z.T. verfallenen Häusern sehr pittoresk, die Fassade der Klosterkirche ist fantastisch und ein Spaziergang zum Friedhof wird mit herrlichen Ausblicken auf Dorf, Kloster und die Landschaft belohnt. Die Restaurierungsarbeiten in der Kirche sind im Gange, zum Zeitpunkt unseres Besuches hatten wir leider keine Möglichkeit, ins Innere der bereits renovierten Bereiche zu gelangen (wie in anderen aktuelleren Reviews beschrieben). Dennoch absolut empfehlenswert.‬

‪Visit to the Monastery‬

‪We stayed at a local town especially to visit this Monastery and we were not disappointed. Restoration work is being carried out but this did not detract from the visit.‬

‪Chegámos de manhã e estava fechado ao contrário do horário oficial. Visitámos de tarde em apenas 20m porque pouco havia para ver. Com muitos espaços degradados.‬

‪En dan ineens ontdek je een parel! Deze kerk is in 1168 gebouwd en verbouwd in de 17e en 18e eeuw. Rond 1900 verlaten door de orde van Citerciënzers en decennia leeggestaan. Sinds een aantal jaar is het een nationaal monument geworden en zijn ze het aan het opknappen...was heel bijzonder.
De kerk is gratis te bezichtigen, daarna volgt het museum, ZEER DE MOEITE WAARD, en de kloostergang voor 3,00 p.p.‬

‪O Mosteiro está em processo de reabilitação e já há áreas recuperadas. Os claustros são notáveis e na visita que fiZemos aconteceu a inauguração uma exposição de fotografia. A igreja e o restante complexo valem bem uma visita‬
