A stunning hidden treasure on the Stanford campus. An enterprising anthropology graduate student brought craftsmen and artists from New Guinea to Stanford some years ago to carve a fascinating series of sculptures, totem poles, drums, etc. What looks at first glance like an ordinary wooded grove soon reveals fascinating and intriguing figures in both natural wood and painted wood, and also some in stone. After the New Guinea artists were taken to see Rodin's "Thinker," they created the New Guinea Thinker in this garden. Also--be on the lookout for the stone sculpture of someone who's a dead ringer for Richard Nixon. Kids love this place - adults, too. Another plus: it's free.

I stumbled upon this place and was lucky to find out some interesting history of the artist. I hear its great at dusk because its lit and spooky. Great for the photographer in you to come out.

This little garden is tucked next to Roble Hall, a beautiful sculpture garden that fits so well among the trees. A beauty for sure.

I appreciate the collection of artifacts and sculpture from across polynesia and the Pacific Rim, however, the garden in which these sculptures have been placed appears to be overgrown and lacks intention. Arrive late in the day and the deep and dark shadows cast by overgrown trees makes this a spooky setting.

I worked at Stanford for 30 years and this is one of my favorite spots on campus. The sculptures were created in place by native New Guinea artists brought to California in a collaboration with the Stanford anthropology department and they engaged with the community in the process of creating this unique outdoor space. Some of the sculptures blend into the natural site and will surprise you as you wander; interspersed are benches for lingering, and right next door is the Windhover Contemplative Center, an ideal pairing with the New Guinea Sculpture Garden for taking you out of the hyper-connected world of screens and social media.

The Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden might be missed if you didn't know it was there. It's quite interesting to walk around and see all the different sculptures.
The University had a number of sculptors on campus for six months creating and carving their "totem poles". As they worked, visitors could interact with them and ask questions.
The many different styles and designs are fascinating. Even on hot days, the area is cool and relaxing. If you're walking around the Stanford campus, you should definitely stop by and check them out.

This little sculpture garden is one of a number of hidden gems. Artisans from New Guinea visited and created these sculptures, one of which is said to look like Richard Nixon. Whether intentional or not, it does!

There are just about 10 sculptures here. Took 10min to go over them. Very special, completely different style from conventional ones like Rodin's nearby.
