Being over 65 years of age, our tickets cost us €8 each. We could never have realised what great value this would turn out to be.
On our first day in Brescia we visited the Roman amphitheatre which is about 200m from the city museum.
On the second day, we visited the museum. To say we were overwhelmed by our visit (in a good way) would be an understatement.
If you've never visited the museum before, our advice would be to imagine it as a visit to the Brescia of old.
You're walking through the old town, the old streets & the old monastery albeit in a bit of a haphazard way. Indeed, you're exploring layers of history which tend to get a little jumbled in your head.
I don't think this is the museum's fault; the layout of the old city simply refuses to be put into an order that a visitor from the 21st century can comprehend easily.
Just don't worry about the timeline - simply be amazed by the monastery, the Roman houses and the spectacular church.
You won't get lost. The guides are amazing and they'll help you get back to the 21st Century.

Semplicemente splendido.

The Museum of Saint Julia is the main museum in Brescia. It is hosted in the former Monastery of Saint Julia, and it was founded in 753 AD at the behest of the Lombard duke Desiderio (future king of the Lombards) and his wife Ansa.
This is a huge museum, with an area of about 14,000 square meters (over 150,000 square foot), and about 12,000 works. There are two main routes in it:
1. The history of the monastery (this includes the churches of Saint Salvatore, Nuns Choir, Saint Mary in Solario) - I reviewed this separately, under "Basilica di San Salvatore"
2. The museum of the City - this review refers to this path only.
The Museum of the City has several sections:
- Prehistoric and protohistoric ages, with accent on the Celts, the ancient inhabitants
- The Roman age, with several house foundations, mosaics and mural paintings (the "Domus dell'Ortaglia" is where the best remains are)
- The necropolis
- The Early Middle Ages: Longobards and Carolingians, with swords, coins, golden crosses, jewels of the age
- The age of the Commune and of the Lordships, dedicated to the late Middle Ages
- The Venetian age, showing pieces of art relating to the last phase of the history of Brescia, which was subjected to the dominion of the Republic of Venice from 1426 to 1797.

Go to their website! As with all museums it changes seasonally. Plus when I was there they closed part of the museum for a special one day private event without notifying people until after you bought your ticket. But that is a very European thing to do.
