The lava domo that rises directly by the sea and overlooks the historic center of Lipari, which extends to the base on the western and southern sides was, in its highest area (two areas can be distinguished: a slightly lower one that corresponds to the current Piazza Mazzini, and a higher one, enclosed in the Spanish walls), the original nucleus of the town since prehistoric times; with the arrival of the Greeks, this became the acropolis, a function that it maintained even during the Roman period; in the Middle Ages it returned to being the main inhabited area of Lipari (if not the only one) because it was more easily defensible.
Today we talk indifferently about the acropolis or castle (with reference to subsequent medieval and Renaissance fortifications), and in fact it is an area no longer inhabited residentially: the few civil buildings are in fact used by the Archaeological Museum; many churches, including the Cathedral, the only open find of those still used by the diocese (the church of Santa Caterina is deconsecrated and always used by the Archaeological Museum, while that of the Immaculate is managed by the Municipality which uses it for various purposes such as auditoriums or extemporaneous exhibitions; the church of Our Lady of Sorrows and that of Maria SS.delle Grazie are still usable by the diocese but, as said, found closed); then there are archaeological excavations, a theater used for shows, green areas and panoramic balconies.

An area so full of things to see that you need at least half a day to savor everything. On a spur overlooking the sea, the acropolis dominates Lipari, surrounded by walls of solid stone. On the top numerous churches and the basilica of San Bartolomeo with its ancient cloister, but not only that, also the vast Aeolian archaeological museum, excavations and ancient ruins, gardens, amphitheater in the style of the Greco-Roman ones and splendid views of the sea and the city . The acropolis is a true monumental citadel, reachable from the front via a long stepped street open between the bastions, or from the side through stone vaults beneath an ancient Norman tower. All to be discovered, starting from the museum which collects finds from the Stone Age to contemporary art exhibitions.

Immagine caratteristica dell'isola, la prima che si nota arrivando con la nave e che si vedrà da diverse angolazioni durante il soggiorno.
Bisogna anche salirci per vedere il panorama, il castello, la Cattedrale, i resti greci e tanto altro ancora. Da non ancare!

L'Acropoli di Lipari è piena di reperti sparsi in tutta l'isola, circondata dal castello, dalle mura, il tutto sempre accompagnato da una vista sublime sull'arcipelago.

Esperienza molto interessante la visita a tutto il parco archeologico che consiglio di fare accompagnati da una brava guida del posto. Dal lato sud si accede al castello passando dalla porta più antica con una torre normanna, straordinarie le epoche visibili delle costruzioni che partono dal neolitico all’età del bronzo e dell’epoca ellenistica. Si visita la bella cattedrale di San Bartolo patrono delle Eolie, con all’interno la statua di argento del santo donata dalla popolazione di ringraziamento per aver risparmiato le isole Eolie dal terremoto del 1693 causando in Sicilia 60.000 morti. Il castello che oggi vediamo è opera dello spagnolo Carlo V intorno al 1560, ricostruito in seguito all’aggressione del pirata tunisino Khayr Din Barbarossa che nel 1544 conquistò e distrusse la città e deportò buona parte della popolazione come schiavi. Da vedere inoltre l’antico teatro romano fronte mare e il chiostro scoperto da pochi anni, visita indimenticabile.

Già arrivando dal mare si scorge l'acropoli e viene voglia di salirci subito. Una volta soddisfatto questo desiderio non si rimane delusi poiché si gode di un panorama sublime sul paese di Lipari

These are the ruins of the original Greek Village that dates from 580 B.C. They are spread out over the top of the hill and include a collection of sarcophagi from the necropolis of Diana.
There are two main archaeological areas, one with the remains of huts relating to the Bronze Age; and the other, parts of the Hellenistic and Roman towns.
There is good descriptive signage scattered around the area.

punto focale del centro storico, vi si accede da Piazza Mazzini, entro il perimetro delle mura tanti ritrovamenti archeologici

L 'acropoli e la parte alta della città fortificata da possenti mura . All'interno ci sono la cattedrale ,la chiesa di S.Caterina , la chiesa dell'Addolorata , la chiesa dell' Immacolata e la chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie , il museo e l'anfiteatro . Dall'alto si ha una bella vista su marina corta e marina lunga .

Da non perdere nella visita a LIpari. Dal porto salire al Castello da dove si gode di un panorama mozzafiato. Visita degli scavi del museo e della Chiesa di San Bartolomeo. Si scende poi per andare nella parte moderna della cittadina
