Pozzuoli è una delle poche città che in epoca romana possedevano 2 anfiteatri: quello ora denominato “piccolo” e quello chiamato “Flavio”, voluto dalla cosiddetta " Colonia Flavia Augusta” che lo costruì a sue spese, a seguito dell’incremento della popolazione che aveva reso insufficiente il primo.
Questo poteva contenere fino a 40.000 spettatori e, pare, sia stato progettato dagli stessi architetti del Colosseo.
Oggi è visitabile in tutte le sue parti ed è abbastanza impressionante nelle sue dimensioni superiori ad un campo di calcio.
Il tempo ha ovviamente lasciato molti danni ma ancora oggi è ben visibile la sua struttura.
La visita dei Campi Flegrei non può che iniziare dall’Anfiteatro Flavio.

Oggi è visitabile in tutte le sue parti ed è abbastanza impressionante nelle sue dimensioni superiori ad un campo di calcio.

La visita dei Campi Flegrei non può che iniziare dall’Anfiteatro Flavio.

Il 25 Aprile, data l'iniziativa che prevedeva i musei nazionali aperti in questo giorno festivo, abbiamo deciso in famiglia di visitare questo sito. Nonostante io mi sia trovato nei suoi paraggi per una vita intera, mai avevo avuto modo di addentrarmici. Il sito ha due ingressi: nel primo, dove vi è la biglietteria, possiamo accedere ai sotterranei; nel secondo accediamo alla passeggiata che circonda l'anfiteatro e che ci porta poi nell'arena. Noi siamo appunto partiti dai sotterranei. Spettacolare luogo dove delle fessure superiori (oltre alla grata centrale dell'arena) fanno entrare la luce naturale che crea uno scenario fermo nel tempo, si ha davvero l'impressione di rivivere quell'epoca . La superficie dei sotterranei segue più o meno la medesima degli spalti e pertanto si esegue un giro pressappoco circolare al di sotto di essi. Durante questo percorso possiamo ammirare le varie rovine e colonne (persino pietre appartenenti alla parte superiore ormai non più esistente da secoli) preservate in seguito. Troviamo persino due plastici che ci mostrano come era un tempo l'attrazione e come è adesso, permettendoci un raffronto. A seguire abbiamo varcato l'ingresso fronte strada, percorrendo appunto la passeggiata antica dove vi sono le medesime rovine di cui sopra oltre a diverse statue. Si accede quindi all'arena dove possiamo godere della maestosità di questa struttura. Lungo le varie aree, non mancano cartelli con i tanti riferimenti storici interessantissimi. Un luogo che va assolutamente visitato e che abbiamo apprezzato enormemente, tra l'altro sito a pochi passi dal capolinea ferroviario della Linea 2.

Tras recorrer media hora de metro para llegar aquí, encontramos una decepcion en todos los sentidos: ruinoso, mal cuidado, cubierto de capa vegetal, vallados que te impiden moverte, …. Y para colmo, el “nuevo horario” solo te permite ver la parte inferior, los cimientos. Ni siquiera pudimos ver la Arena y las gradas. Eso si, 5 funcionarios en la entrada “faciendo niente”. Una pena… No merece la pena perder un solo minuto.

Peccato. Avere un simile gioiello in casa e non valorizzarlo. Organizzazione e pulizia uguale a zero, in molte festività è chiuso.

Costruito nel I sec. d.C. è il terzo più importante per dimensioni mai realizzato dai Romani, superato solo dal Colosseo e dell'anfiteatro dell' antica Capua. Poteva ospitare fino a 40.000 spettatori. Visitabili purtroppo solo i sotterranei a pagamento. Apertura h 9.00, dalla stazione circa 10 minuti a piedi

Vicino al Rione Terra, è visitabile solo all'interno dei padiglioni, non si può accedere agli spalti nè all'interno dell'arena. Comunque interessante. Biglietto economico da diritto a sconto 20% per l'imperdibile Pozzuoli sotterranea.

Unfortunately, the arena remains closed to the public for health and safety reasons.
The site is still very much worth a visit in order to explore the underground passages and chambers where gladiators, slaves and freemen roamed and exotic animals were caged, in order to entertain the public in the 3rd largest amphitheatre in Italy. (behind the Colosseum, Rome and the amphitheatre at Capua)
A guide is helpful as there are plenty of interesting things that could be missed if you have not carefully studied the site before arrival. E.g., the places where the lift mechanisms would have been. Access points including internal stairs and where the wooden bridges would have been placed across the down ramps to enable the 40k spectators to move around the stadium.

Da non perdere soprattutto per i suoi sotterranei. Il percorso al di sotto dell'arena è vasto e ricco di reperti marmorei che lo rendono particolarmente affascinante.

Lo sapete che dopo il Colosseo a Roma e l'anfiteatro Capuano a S.M. Capua Vetere è il terzo anfiteatro romano più grande d'Europa?
Visitatelo. È spettacolare.
L'ingresso costa appena 5€
Ma se fate acquisto multiplo,pagando 10€ vedrete anche le terme di Baia e la Sibilla di Cuma.

The Metro Line 2 (at Piazza Garibaldi or Piazza Cavour). It brings you on the upper side of Pozzuoli, just on the back of the amphitheater. With the ticket of the amphitheater you can visit three other site (Baths of Baia, Castle of Baia aka Museum of Phlegraean Fields and the site of Cuma). From Pozzuoli you can move in the other Phlegraean village with the buses. Bus called "Bacoli" for the two sites of Baia (you can take it just out the amphitheater) and bus 12 for Cuma (you can take it down to the harbor). The day off of the amphitheater is Tuesday, the Baia's ones is Monday. Have a nice travel!
