‪After over 30 years' skiing, pretty much everywhere across Europe, I finally made it to the Milky Way. We stayed in 'Sauzy', during what were poor snow conditions - typical spring snow, just even less of it: one local apparently said it was the worst season they had ever had, though into the 'Good Ski Guide' down the years has often commented on dodgy snow conditions; the local micro-climate might be a bit dry being well to the south of the main alpine massif, and to the lee of the normal storm-facing slopes.

Anyway, despite the poor conditions, my ski-buddy and I, both advanced skiers, enjoyed it - though we had the benefit of a car and drive to Montgenevre on three days. On reflection this ought not to be the case, because we were constant;y commenting on the painfully slow lifts, the fact that some lifts were closed for no obvious reason (my guess was quiet pistes - it was notable in Monte on the Saturday that more lifts were running with more skiers (local weekenders) out: presumably it's just commercial sense. It's also a long time since I spent so much of a skiing holiday being pulled up a slope by a frisbee behind my bum.
As other contributors have noted, to ski from S d'O to Montgenevre, even for fast skiers, would be quite an ask. (I say ski, but in poor snow it requires at least two lifts to make the crossing at Cesana, and by reckoning there would be a run of five lifts back-to-back to get to the top of Claviere). Two from our chalet did it, but had only an hour above Claviere before having to return. I was surprised by the relatively early lift closing times: I'm used to 16:45-17 in France in spring. Here some of the lifts were closing by 16:00; many by 16:30; 16:45 I think was the latest. One or two also closed for lunch: I can't remember when I last saw that. I have to say I don't have much sympathy for the contributors bemoaning missed lifts: lifts everywhere work to their timetable and I've never known anyone extend the time - you just have to plan very prudently if you are dependent on links to get back from your 'local' pistes: I certainly wouldn't mark the area down for that.

Overall we liked the variety of pistes, and the opportunity for easy off-piste. It was at least two weeks since snow then we were there, and there were still plenty of places not tracked-out: in Espace Killy or the 3V, say, it would be gone in two or three days. The scenery is pleasant, plenty of trees, and some nice gladed areas. Piste grading is invariably over-rated: reds here would be blue in EK, and the blacks in Sauze are all really just severe reds, no bad thing perhaps because in warm conditions to blacks (reds) in the bowl between Sauze and Sesriere held good quality snow all day.

We were disappointed by the lack of mountain restaurants in the area, the density is generally low, although a bit better around Claviere. And yes, some toilets in the mountains are of the 'hole in the ground' variety, but we're not in Britain, we're in Italy (and France). Signage is also woeful, and the piste-map doesn't really help. My buddy also made the valid point that the lack of electronic maps meant it was hard to keep track of what pistes were or were not open - maybe we should have downloaded the app, though I'm not sure I'd rely on that either extrapolating from the low-level chaos that seems to underpin much of the local operation.

There's no doubt the best skiing we had was in Montgenevre, some of that was simply because it's higher so in the spring conditions more of the pistes were complete, but even here the lifts were disappointingly slow - we had had a day here fifteen or so years ago, and little had changed apart from the main road being put through a tunnel now so that the resort is much more person- friendly, and the two ski areas feel less remote fro each other. If I was designing it I'd have put at least two more lifts in to make the links in both directions work; the journey from Claviere to the pistes to the SW of Monte is a ridiculous drag requiring three slow chairs that STVI would have solved long ago with one long gondola - maybe there isn't enough traffic here, or maybe it's a consequence of Monte being distinct to the Milky Way and not wanting to install a lift only to attract a load of occasional traffic form the less snow-sure resorts on the MW.

We also had a morning is Sestriere and honestly couldn't wait to get away. The 'Good Ski Guide' described S as having the best pistes in the MW; we didn't get it. Maybe we got it on a poor day.

We will return, though only with the car again, and probably making Montgenevre our base.‬

‪We had a great holiday, with a nice hotel and the snow was OK but some of the lifts in the Vialattea network are old and outdated. We stayed in Sauze d'Oulx and skied to Montgenevre (France) on 9th March. We were aware it was a distance but set off in what we thought was a good time to get back to Sauze d'Oulx. The lift down to Cesana (which connects between areas) was incredibly slow and restricted to one person on each chair. This created a big queue and caused us to arrive at the final drag lift to reach the top and return to Sauze d'Oulx 20 seconds after it closed at 4:00 pm. It was really 20 seconds (honest), they'd pulled the rope across and had just stopped skiers joining the lift. We asked nicely if we could take the lift, but the operators would not budge. The consequence was we had to ski back down to Cesana and order a taxi. It cost us 60 Euros and we had to wait a long time. We arrived back to Sauze d'Oulx at 7:15 pm. I can understand people will say we should have allowed more time but we really didn't expect the delay getting down to Cesana due to the really old lift and only one at a time, 4.00 pm was also very early to close the final drag to get us over the ridge and the lift operators could have allowed a few minutes grace period. In total there were around 15 people in the same situation and it would have meant keeping the lift open just a few more minutes to allow us to get back to our resorts. The Lift operators were total jobs worths, they understood the impact of what they were doing.‬

‪great town, really lively, good restaurants and bars, good value. Terrible lift system

the lifts kept on closing randomly whilst we were there. Apparently if the wind is over about 30-40 mph the lifts close. very frustrating. It didn't seem windy whilst we were there but top lifts weren't open and the whole ski area closed twice around lunchtime because of wind. Rent a car if you go so you can drive to sestriere or somewhere when they close the lifts...‬

‪Just got back from a weeks skiing - plenty snow but big lack of open lifts & slopes. The blue goat trails that have been set up to avoid opening slopes are both hazardous & overcrowded! Would not return!‬

‪Not been here for 19 years so thought the lift system would have moved on in this time, it hasn’t much. Lots of lifts and runs shut even though it has now snowed. Very slow lift system, a massive shock when used to other resorts all around the Alps. Will give it another 19 years before I try it again. Not impressed at all.‬

‪Great place for a ski holiday. Sestriere also easily accessible as well as further options of Montiluna and Montgenevre.
Clotes main lift crowded first thing, so sometimes worth walking or taking shuttle to Sportinia chair. Runs near village can be slushy when lack of snow, but grommers do a great job maintaining runs.‬

‪Evitare. ‬

‪Just returned from 6 days skiing here and it was possibly the worst ski trip I have ever had. Granted, the poor snow conditions did not help but the lack of snow making equipment on the mountain, and the lack of it being used when it was cold enough to make snow really impacted the trip. The lifts are all very slow and in serious need of updating and the infrastructure of toilets on the mountain are dire. Italians have now got the reputation for worst queuers as they are oblivious to how to queue for lifts; stopping after the gates and in the way so others can't get through. Lift operators have got no care in the world about getting people up the mountains with empty chairs or chairs with 1 person often going up the mountain when there are queues. The area at the bottom of the Clotes lift in the morning is chaos, especially with the ski school pushing their way through. Equally the bottom of the lift by Soleil Boeuf would regularly take 15+ minutes due to all the race teams pushing through- Free Ski Sauze D'Oulx in the green and blue coats were the worst for this! Many of the restaurants on the mountain were often half taken up by ski schools and race teams with little room for the remaining skiers, as well as many race teams pushing to the front of the line. If you are hoping to self navigate this mountain then you may want to study the map before you go. Signage is very poor and on our first day we headed to Sestriere only to be unable to find the blue run back to Sauze, going wrong 3 times. Having not been on the slopes since February 2022 I was really looking forward to going to the mountains but the conditions and general infrastructure was very poor. By the end of our 6 days we were going from sheet ice to a mud, grass and rock combination. The lack of good conditions also resulted in all the connecting runs and lifts to other areas of the resort being closed so you are stuck on the same 3 runs all day. When they were open, it took so long to get across to other areas you could only achieve 2 or 3 runs before beginning to plan your route back to your own resort.‬
