We stopped here on our drive from Maribor to Celje to see this 17th C Renaissance palace with 4 corner turrets. Although its furnishings were removed by the Nazi’s, the main hall frescoes painted in the 1720’s remain. A small regional museum has been added.

There are these gorgeous 18th century frescos in the Knights Hall in the castle that are worth seeing. Really something stunning with an incredible use of trompe l'oeil technique. This place is a good place to visit for folks interested in Slovenian culture, literature, and history. The exhibits in the castle are all very specific to Slovenia so if you aren't that interested in the culture then it probably won't have a strong impact.

The Knights Hall dates back to the end of the 17th century, when the northern and the southern wings of the castle were first connected. The famous frescoes were painted during the years of 1717 and 1721 by F. I. Flurer, who was Attems’ principal painter. They are an excellent example of illusionism and are extremely well preserved. Today the hall hosts various events.
CHAPEL
The castle chapel is covered with frescoes by F. I. Flurer, which were most probably completed in 1721 and are the most recent and the most detailed of all of the frescoes made for Attems. The chapel and all its paintings are dedicated to Mary. The ceiling frescoes have been restored, while the wall frescoes are still awaiting restoration.

The fresco painted staircase was built during Attems’ restoration of the castle between 1717 and 1722. The frescoes are part of the baroque style glorification of Attems, the patron of arts.

We planned a quick stop at the Slovenska Bistrica Castle but ended up staying three hours. Vanesa gave us a guided tour of the Castle and museum. She was fluent in both English and Slovene and gave us some interesting insights into every aspect of the castle and the museum collections.
Some examples of the collections: oil lamps, prayer books, fossils and minerals, early 20th century furnishings, etc. Every collection is well organized and displayed.
Try to arrange a visit when Venesa is available for a tour.
This was a highlight of our trip - a hidden jewel.

Cette petite cité a 2 jolies églises et un petit château fort avenant dans lequel il est loisible de prendre un rafraichissement. ... Une halte agréable quand on visite l'est de la Slovénie

wir bekamen trotz Ruhetag eine sehr interesante und engagierte Führung durch das Schloss und die Sammlungen. Vieles ist schon renoviert. Manches wirkt noch wie in einem Dornröschenschlaf. Sehr romantisch und nicht überlaufen.
