Seeing so much history in each of the buildings especially the Museum, they worked so hard breaking in the land.

The Ongaonga Museum is a step back into our pioneering days.
Also nearby, just a 2h hike up a very well maintained track in the Ruahines, is the Sunrise Hut. Which has to be one of the flashest back country huts in New Zealand.
Split level, with a large bay window, it sits on the edge of a towering escarpment.
Nearby is the infamous Armstrong Saddle, site of a plane crash which the pilot walked away from, never to be seen again :o

Small free historic museum (donation boxes around) of buildings and artifacts relating to the area's history.
We did start at the main Ongaonga museum complex (location of public toilets) but it was a very cold day, too cold to be wandering the many outside buildings. One of the volunteers met us in the main information building and we had a good time talking about the history of the area.
We spent more time at the Coles Bros. site which is a couple of blocks east, across from the General Store. The Coles Bros workshop is on its original site, (most of the other complex buildings have been moved in), the largest of the museum buildings, and is slowly being restored by the volunteers. At the moment you can only walk through half of it but you can see the machinery, articles on the walls etc, and there's numerous technological curiosities such as the steam-engine bath and a restored coach.
As it was the end of a cold day (late afternoon sunday) we only spent an hour or so. On a warmer day I could see someone interested in the history spending a few hours.
We look forward to visiting again to see how restoration has progressed. :-)

We came across the OngaOnga museum after deciding to check it out - curious when we saw the signpost off State Highway 50 (you just turn off for a few minutes). It just happened to be a Sunday afternoon the only time they are open. Run by a bunch of avid local volunteers the museum has a selection of historical buildings including an old tramping hut, butchers shop and a colonial cottage. We had a great chat with a old chap who volunteered there doing restoration work who knew loads about the various buildings. One of us got a ride on a old penny farthing outside which was pretty hilarious. We wandering up to the few shops which make Ongaonga which are historical too - it's like a slice back in time. Totally worth pulling off State Highway 50 between Dannevirke and Hastings for a visit.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. All our volunteers love our little slice of History that is the Ongaonga Museum. We do not need much arm twisting to spend time in our slice of paradise!
Glad you enjoyed your visit. :-)

We loved our visit to the Onga Onga Museum Village. We had a guided tour after a very interesting and informative introduction. Then we wandered through the village, taking our time to look at the wealth of exhibits and interesting detailed information. Obviously mu=ch loved and well cared for by Dennis and his wife, Debbie. Their grandchildren too so eager to tell us the stories they have learnt about the buildings and exhibits.
Such a rewarding stop just a minute or so from Highway 50. Watch out for the signs, pull in, enjoy a stroll around the museum and then a cuppa with fresh baking at the general store.

On our way to another attraction we decided to visit the Museum as one of our party used to live there as a child. Several old buildings restored and holding a lot of artifacts from settler days. Very interesting but especially interesting were the documents, photos etc. which gave a great picture of the early days of the settlement - there's a wealth of information about the people, the district, the landscape and farms. For those interested in history this is definitely worth a visit - we loved it. I was unable to put in the opening hours in the attraction details - it's open on Sundays from 1pm to 4pm or by arrangement outside that time. It's off the main routes but if going in the general area worth a stop to check it out - we'll be back to see if we can help store the documents, photos etc. on the Hawkes Bay Knowledge Bank archives as the information is priceless
