Nicely restored house on the Neckar river where Holderlin spent the last third of his life. You can listen to readings of some of the famous poems, track the creation of the elegies modeled on Pindar, and learn about the love of his life (a French woman). One of the best parts is the beautiful garden. Also, don't forget to get a coffee on the bank just above the Turm. The experience for non-German guests would of course be much enhanced if there were translations. How difficult must this be?

The Hölderlin Tower (Hölderlinturm) is a nice and small Museum standing on one bank of the river Neckar, in the marvellous city of Tübingen. The building housing the Museum is a splendid and peculiar one where once inside one feels an inner state of calm thanks to the literary artworks there called forth, the daylight luminosity which can be enjoyed there and the excellent views which can be beheld through the windows over the river and the parks all around. Its peculiarity resides mainly in the fact that in its middle part the wall looking onto the said river has un incomplete cylindrical shape protruding on the outer façade towards the riverbank. The edifice is tastily light yellow painted, what makes it be an integral part of the picturesque Neckarfront.
The Hölderlin Tower was the house where the great German poet Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin, where he lived for 36 years until he died in 1843. The carpenter Ernst Zimmer, owner of the house, allowed him to occupy a room in it. The writer had just been released from hospital at the beginning of May 1807 with a diagnosis of a severe incurable mental illness when he started living there. He carried out a lot of his work in that room, a part of which is limited by the wall being the inner part of the aforesaid façade. From there he used to look very often every day out of the windows at the river, the trees, the sky and whatever else can be seen from that place. According to a writing by Lotter Zimmer, the wife of the stated carpenter, a transcription of which is exhibited in the Museum, for Hölderlin a sight out of the window was a sight into the eternity.
The building concerned was constructed in the thirteenth century, though unfortunately it burnt down thirty years after Hölderlin's death. Upon rebuilding it some changes were introduced; for instance, there where there were five windows in the convex part of the pan of the wall of the poet's room, nowadays there are just three.
As far as furniture is concerned, from the time where Hölderlin lived in that house just a nice little table remains, placed there where the writer had his room. It's at that table where he wrote most of his works and which, according to one of the explanations displayed in the Museum, “he would bang when he had a quarrel with his thoughts”. That table is a part of the permanent exhibition “Hölderlin in Tübingen”, which consists in an overview of Hölderlin's life in Tübingen, first as a student and afterwards as a patient in the clinic, and as an inhabitant of the Tower itself, and in which the influence of his work is outlined. Some of the items displayed consisting in copies of manuscripts or in transcriptions of some of the poet's works are extremely interesting and it's therefore advisable to peruse them with much attention.
Apart from the foregoing, multifarious temporary and special exhibitions are also there held.
There is also a reference library on the first floor whose volumes are of a great excellence.
It's no doubt an interesting museum whose visit is absolutely recommendable.
