Amazing seeing elephants up close, and the member of staff who greeted us was friendly. But the whole place felt like profit machine. The two elephants we saw were chained up and the one we met was pacing up and down a small area to give rides and be washed. We were only there half hour and in the company of an elephant for 10-15 mins. And the handler requested a tip almost before our visit was over.
If it wasn’t part of a pre-arranged tour we wouldn’t have visited. It felt uncomfortable and having been on a safari the day before to see elephants in the wild it was an awkward experience.
The elephants are tame so perhaps can’t be reintroduced to the wild but using them as an attraction isn’t fair. I can’t comment on their treatment outside of their daily duties but a large controlled area where they can live as if wild would be much, much better.

We visited this place and got in love with elephants even more then before. Definitely once you in Sri Lanka you have to try this out. In this foundation you can learn a bit about types of elephants, feed them, wash them, take an elephant's shower, walk and ride. We don't usually ride them, but walk next through their territory in their natural area was pleasant. Those giants are super friendly. After walk we washed him in the river and its look so cute brings a lot of positive emotions and energy. We spend around 1 - 1.5 hour there. If you would like to wash them and had shower from trumpet I would advise to bring additional clothes to change after. We paid 15K rupees for 2 adults and 2 kids. Definitely worth it

This was our 4th visit to the Foundation, and we were delighted to hear that it has been open for a few months, after being closed due to the Pandemic.
For the second time, we spent the afternoon walking around the compound with our sponsored elephant Raja, and bathing and showering with him in the River - what great fun!
We stayed overnight in one of the guest rooms and enjoyed lunch, dinner and breakfast in the Colonial House, which is the family home of the Foundation's Patron Carmine. The setting for these meals was absolutely delightful and the food excellent.
Early next morning, we met up with Raja and went for another walk in a different part of the compound, followed by the daily routine of preparing and giving him his tablets and vitamins, and brushing the dirt from soles of his feet.
For us, the experience is awesome every visit. All the staff show a kindness and dedication to the elephants in their care - it is a joy.

We came here as part of our Jetwing Travels package and had been really looking forward to it. When we got there we were allowed to bathe an elephant for 1 minute and then that was it !!!! We had been looking forward to feeding or walking with the elephants but this didn’t seem to be an option. Staff were unhelpful.
In terms of the animal welfare - this is the modern day equivalent of a working elephant. Elephants are forced to repeat monotonous tasks like being bathed / ridden for the enjoyment of tourists. We noticed a few were in chains also.
The mahouts (elephant carers) were the worst part. They scream aggressive commands at the elephants and if they don’t comply, they are prodded and jabbed with a metal stick. They definitely did not look qualified to be caring for elephants. They also demanded tips whenever anybody wanted a photo!!! (Despite everyone paying an entrance fee)
Luckily, our tour guide had arranged for us to do an elephant safari a few days before and that was AMAAAZING. If you want to experience a real connection with the animal do it in their natural habitat… not in a fake “sanctuary”.

A fuir.....

A FUIR!!!

Was very sceptical about going to this place as I thought it was going to be a “show” place dressed up as a sanctuary. But my local guide assured me this was not the case.
I’m happy to report we had a lovely experience. The elephants are treated very well and the one tied up is because he’s in “must” with uncontrollable hormones!
The elephant went for a walk and we followed. Not the other way round. Really lovely.

Hello Jeff,
Did you stay overnight at the Elephant Foundation or eat there? This is an option I am considering.
I have read a review by someone who was working for the Foundation for 3mths, who said accommodation & food are good; however, I would like to know from a visitor/tourist's point of view.
I am a hardy traveller, & my Mother is also, but too a degree :)
I would appreciate your feedback.
Regards,
Rachel.

The MEF has proved to be an interesting attraction in Sri Lanka. Our clients usually experience this during their travel to the cultural capital or the hill country. During the visit the travellers will get the opportunity to take part in an Elephant walk and Elephant bath. The lunch at the site is highly recommended. For further information please contact us at

she will love it. Just walking behind these beautiful elephants watching them eating. She will also get to feed them. No riding of course as they explain this is so cruel. This experience is even better and of course you get into the river and wash them down. Wonderful memories and have fun.
Hi there, visiting some family in SL next summer and travelling with a few friends. Just wondering how much a week's volunteering would cost per person? Thank you in advance 😊

how many hours does this visit take? and do we have to contact them before coming or is it a walk in situation?

HI. It usually lasts 2-3 hours. We were there about 4 hours. You can go fast or slowly! People mainly just turned up but we preferred to book in advance by e-mail. This can fast track you if busy. It is cheap, you can book the walk without lunch. We chose to adopt 3 elephants as we then got the walk and entrance and lunch for free. This is more expensive than 2 fees but it was only about £100, which we thought was a bargain. We chose our elephant in advance and got adoption packs for each. They arranged our taxis at a good rate too. One of the best experiences of my life and we are thinking of doing it again. See their website for email and bank details, it was all very smooth.

Hello, I have a few questions please!
1 - are there facilities there to change, freshen up etc?
2 - do you have to pay extra to get the elephant shower?
3 - who do you tip whilst you are there and how much is acceptable? this is my first visit to Sri Lanka.
Thanks in advance

Is the MEF Millenium Elephant Foundation the same venue as the Pinegalli Elephant Orphanage ......if not, which is the most ethical establishment in terms of elephant welfare ...we are not interested in riding on elephants, just spending quality time with them in a small group environment. We are visiting various nature reserves separately to see them in the wild, thanksinadvance for your comments.

No it is different. This place is amazing, and they take great care of their elephants. No riding them, as it actually hurts them to have that great big saddle under their ribs. Just make sure you get to the right one as they are pretty close together. If leaving Kandy, it is after the Orphanage. I hope you get as much out of this experience as we did. The staff too are amazing with their knowledge. Have fun!
