‪This is an ancient Devi temple in Kannur, which is being visited by a large number of devotees in the last few years. The Pancha Loha idol was stolen a few times but thieves carrying lost their directions, senses which forced them to leave the idol mid way and inform cops.

The legend say that a Mizhavu [Mridangam - type of drum played in South India] fell from the deva lokha and Parasuraman installed a Devi at that spot and the temple came up. Devi is in Durga, Laxmi and Saraswathi forms and anyone who prays with an offering of Ghee Lamp will be blessed in the form they need her. Dress Code is traditional. Men should remove their shirt/t-shirts/vests before entering the temple.

Another famous temple, Kottiyoor is located around 28kms [55 minutes] drive from here, Nearest airport is Kannur [CNN] International which is less than an hour drive.‬

‪A small but serene temple deep in the backwoods of and about an hour from Kannur.

This temple where Pazhassi Raja worshipped was until recently unknown and too remote except for the locals. The deity is Goddess Durga and is very powerful for those who have the faith.
The temple became popular after a police commissioner sent out a whatsapp story of three times thieves who attempted to steal the idol were unable to because of paranormal reasons. Since then the temple has been a little unusually crowded.

Ghee lamp is the main divine offering here. There is a old and nice temple pond. Prasadam offered free consists of black coffee and upma (in the morning) served in the back area of the temple near the pond.
There is some vehicle parking setup a few hundred yards from the temple to accommodate the new throng of devotees from far.‬

‪A very peaceful temple in a good location. Around 45 minutes from the new Kannur airport. We stayed in Aroma ayur resort in Mattannur which is near the airport. We didn’t find any better hotels near this temple. Me & my wife visited the shrine both in the morning and evening. The most important offering is the ghee lamp. We ourselves can light it and keep it in the front. In the morning we got black coffee and uppuma as breakfast prasadam from the temple. The temple is open in the morning till 12 pm and opens at 5.15 pm in the evening.
We also visited Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple in the evening which is around one and a half hour journey from this temple. Almost the same time it takes from Kannur airport also. Better to be there for the entire evening as there is vellattam which is worth seeing. We were able to watch it only for one hour due to time constraint. There are too much hotels near this temple which seems to be good for stay.
Then we visited Rajarajeswara temple which is just 15 minutes from Parassinikadavu. Here ladies are allowed in the temple for darshan only from 8pm to 8.30 pm only. The temple closes sharp 8.30pm.
We also visited Thrichambaram sreekrishna temple which is near to Rajarajeswara temple. A big good temple worth visiting.
Within one day u can finish visiting all the temples.‬

‪There are so many temples in Kerala in the name of Porkali Goddess. Most of them were associated with Kalaries, the learning centres of ethnic martial art Kalarippayattu. In Kannur District, there is a temple called Mridanga Saileswari, very close to the new International Airport at Moorkhan Parambu.

The temple is surrounded with trees, almost looks like a forest temple. The goddess of the temple incarnated in the form of ant hill shaped like Mridanga, a musical instrument. First the local ethnic clans started worshipping the goddess and later the local kings built a temple. Their palace was just behind the temple, which was believed to be destroyed by Britishers after winning the war against Pazhassi Raja, the brave king known as Kottayathu Thampuran. He had also wrote 4 Kathakali attakathas and a slokam was specially wrote to pray the Porkali Hoddess. It starts with Maathangananam Abjavaasa....

There was a cave temple just behind the existing temple which too was filled after Pazhassi Raja lost the war with Britishers. Now the temple authorities are making plans to rebuild it.

The idol of the temple was stolen many times but all the times, the thief was unable to cross the walls due to some unknown forces. The temple thus became famous and thousands of devotees from various South Indian states are visiting this temple.

The first picture is of the temple and the second one is the reminiscent of the old cave temple.

The renovation work of the existing temple is also going on. So the place will be a pilgrim Centre within few years. The proximity to the new International Airport may boost the chances.

There is lodging facilities near, maintained by the temple authorities. ‬

‪This temple is a hidden gem, for many outsiders. A powerful deity by nature, the many unsuccessful attempts to steal it, many historic significances all adds to your urge to visit the place. Located on a serene quite place, an exquisite temple architecture with a beautiful temple pond on the other side adds to the charm. Above all the happiness of a good Darshan. The temple remained open till 1 pm. Food is served for all on most days. A google search on the temple before visiting will be recommended if you are new to it.‬

‪Most famous Durga temple in Kannur district, Muzhakunnu Mridanga Saileswari temple offers divine gratification like none other. There have been incidents of theft in this temple, but the idol was promptly returned by whoever made those attempts. Situated in a very beautiful and serene village setting, this temple is a must visit for everyone visiting this part of Kerala state.‬
