‪Very large village church. Well maintained and with an interesting history, particularly regarding the fundraising for the Victorian restoration. Attractive and unusual stained glass windows‬

‪I first visited this church 10 years ago on the occasion of the first day of my retirement. I had decided to enter retirement with the aim of doing things more slowly, and taking the time to enjoy things fully rather than giving them a quick glance in passing.

This wonderful church was my first “slow exploration” and still retains a special feeling for me. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus, it isn’t yet open on a daily basis, but it is still worth visiting to enjoy its beautiful riverside location and the extensive church grounds.‬

‪An impressive and well maintained church set in an extensive churchyard with a special emphasis on tree species and habitats with interpretation boards. The number of graves is a memory of ther days when it was the only burial site for many miles. The church is in regular use and also hosts concerts for the Swaledale Festival, etc. The old rectory stands next door.‬

‪This is a must. Squat, low towered, wide nave and sturdy pillars and strong, brooding beautiful wooden ceiling. this stands t the end of the corpses' way. The path that brought the dead form higher up the dale. For centuries this was the only church and a two day journey was necessary to bring people to burial here. It has the stout stone grace of a church in the rugged landscape but with a graceful quality to it nevertheless. I thoroughly recommend visiting, admiring its interior style and structure and reflecting on the centuries of toil and labour and hardship this place will have witnessed.‬

‪Decided to drive through Grinton as a little detour on our way home from a trip in the lake district. As my ancestors come from Grinton and the surrounding area I have always had an interest in seeing the place. St Andrews is a lovely little kept church. The grave yard was well kept with rabbits hopping around the grave stones. A very pretty little church.‬

‪Visited this beautiful church whilst on a genealogy themed week in Swaledale . This church used to be the main Church in Swaledale. There is a book in the entrance which records the names of those buried there, however there are a few gaps in the records due to some of the gravestones being too weathered to read and record those buried there, Well worth visiting the interior of the Church and reading some of the inscriptions on the floor of the church etc.‬

‪A great church to visit, friendly and warm. Bats accommodated. Church yard maintained for wild life as it should be. Lots of history and medieval features. Set in the beautiful hills, called the cathedral of the Dales for good reason.‬

‪Please visit this church for a lesson in history and bring your camera for lovely photos. The stained glass windows are something to behold.
There is information all through the church for you to read about and even if you just fancied a look around. The grounds and a lovely walk and well worth the visit whilst you are in Grinton. ‬
