If you visit this temple, you know what to expect ; I am flabbergasted with some reviews who express their utmost disgust . . . did they not know ??!!
There are rats, some 20,000 of them. Together with the pigeons, they poop all over and you will walk barefoot. Don't like it ? Don't go there.
But for those who travel to learn and to experience the unusual, this is "must see". Even though this may be incomprehensible to our hygienic Western mind, it is clearly important to a lot of devotees who flock in their thousands to this temple.
Observe and learn.

Visited the Karni Mata temple in Bikaner where rats openly roam freely in and around the temple and where they are openly fed by the followers. It was quite a shaky experience and that's putting it quite mildly. What was majorly disappointing was its extremely poor maintenance. This along with the huge presence of rats made this visit a highly uncomfortable one

It is a different experience and auto charges you approx 700-800 Rs. To take you to karni mata temple ( Deshnok) and drop back to the city.
Rs. 1000 for Karni mata temple , camel farm ( Camel research centre) , vaishnodham mandir ( must visit) and Devi kund Sagar lake ( Centopahs)
This temple is unique in nature and there are rats everywhere. However, the day i went, there were quite a few people and hence rats were on side and didn't touch me ( to my relief) .
In 30 mins, I was done with entire mandir visit .
If you are in Bikaner , i will absolutely suggest you to go here for a different experience.

Unique temple where human and nature come together. This temple is famous for its Kaba (rats) where you find all over the temple running. Must visit place if your in and around Deshnok. If your afraid of rats then this is not the place for you. This temple has rich history. No entry fees. Duration - 1 hr if less crowd

India is notorious for its numerous Hindu gods and goddesses, rituals, religions and legends. So, it's no shock that it also has a temple devoted to rats!
Karni Mata Temple is among the most bizarre and grubby temples I’ve ever visited. But that didn't prevent me from going back for a third time!
It can be overwhelming but well worth visting.
Pack your oldest pair of socks and be willing to thrown them in the bin on your way out!

Deshnok's Karni Mata Temple.....
Which is also known as Madh Deshnok.....
There is a major Hindu temple dedicated to Karni Mata in the city of Deshnok, located 30 km south of Bikaner in Rajasthan.
After the partition of India restricted access to Hinglaj, it has become the most important pilgrimage site for the devotees of Charani Sagatis.
The temple is also a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims and is famous in India and internationally as the "Temple of Rats". The site has become "due to the many rats known as Kaba" which are considered sacred and treated with utmost care by the devotees.
It is sometimes acknowledged as exemplary of the "environmentally conscious Hindu ethos". This temple attracts visitors from across the country as well as curious tourists from all over the world for blessings.
This temple was built in Rajput style by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner in 15th-20th century.
The temple was originally built 500 years ago, around 1530 AD, after the Mahaprayana of Karni Mata. It initially began with a dome-covered inner sanctum and grew in size with the constructions made by devotees over the centuries.
White Kaaba...
Some of the temple's thousands of Kaaba rats are white Kaaba, which are considered particularly sacred. She is considered a manifestation of Karni Mata herself and her four sons. Seeing them is a special blessing and visitors make extensive efforts to bring them forward, offering prasad, a sweet sacred food.
The temple is opened to the public at 04:00 am.
Priests perform mangla-aarti and offer bhog (special food) in the puja.
Devotees make offerings to the rats, which roam the temple in large numbers and are considered auspicious.
The offerings include cheese and sweets.
There are also bowls of milk around the temple for the enjoyment of the rats.

The Karni Mata Temple in Deshnoke is also known as the Temple of Rats for reason. The temple is famous for the approximately 25,000 black rats and a few white rats that live, and are revered, in the temple. Karni Mata is a Hindu Goddess of power and victory and is described as a warrior sage who lived between 14th to 16th century in Western Rajasthan. Most people are bare foot but I kept my socks on...tossed them as soon as we got outside. This is a once in a lifetime experience.

Der Tempel - auch Rattentempel genannt - ist einen Besuch wert. Klein, aber wegen der Ratten sehenswert. Vorher sollte man Opfergaben kaufen.

I had stayed at Bikaner and went to Deshnoke by bus from Bikaner. The Karni Mata temple is just in front of Deshnoke bus stop. It's an hour via bus from Bikaner to Deshnoke and there are frequent buses in that route.

Hi,
I'm going on a solo trip to India at the end of July with the main purpose of visiting this temple. I've booked a private tour with a driver from Jaipur that includes a night in nearby Bikaner, but I didn't realise the tour was private as in just me, and I'm not sure how safe that kind of thing is.
Has anybody else used a private tour to go from Jaipur to this temple and can recommend a good driver for a solo female traveller? Or does anyone know if catching the bus is safer?
I booked my tour through Viator with a tour guide called Raj Sharma but I can't find any reviews anywhere - anyone used this guide before at all?
Any advice welcome.
Thanks!

Hi Liane, don't take a private taxi with you being the only passenger. The best way to go to Deshnoke, which is half an hour away from Bikaner is to travel by train. Try the 12468 Leelan express which goes around in a circular route from Jaipur to Jaipur via bikaner, jaisalmer etc. In fact it stops at Deshnoke, so, you only have to walk for 3 minutes to reach the Karni Mata Rat temple.

There is a train connectivity as well from Delhi to Bikaner. And from Bikaner it's just 30 Kms which can be travelled by car or bus.

We arrived in early morning and while bowls of milk and food were set out already we were told that more rats can be seen in the afternoon. Be sure and view the area where the rat food is prepared / cooked in very large pots.
