As the name says it's a Fort. I expected to see a fort, but its not a fort there. Just a basement with arch kind of pillars and not well maintained. Ranganatha swamy temple is nearby and that is good to visit. But this Fort is not good

We had a spare morning prior to departure . We enlisted an Auto Rickshaw driver to take us the 15 klms to Srirangapatnam Fort. The fort is on an island. There are two rounds of defensive walls. Places of interest include the Mosque, a Hindu Temple, the dungeons, the obelisk and the summer palace. The site of the death of the Sultan Tipu - considered to be the original freedom fighter - is also with in the grounds. There was no guide at the dungeons but the security guard gave an excellent interpretation of how the water rose and fell through the dungeon keeping the British Officers submerged to their necks for 20 hours a day. The obelisk records the battalions who served and those who lost their lives during the battles - both victors and vanquished. Walk to the obelisk gives good vision of the defensive walls and the river beyond.
The summer place veranda is decorated from floor to ceiling with copies of various frescos depicting the battles and also daily life with in the fort and palace. There are also some relics and paintings and sketches of the battles, the survivors and the hostages. An excellent presentation and history lesson. There is phone number for a guided tour included in foreigners entrance price. Alternatively a guide can be hired at the front of the palace.

The all round selection of places to store ammunication, preparation of civil material, temples and mosques is praise worthy.
Hope the tunnels are preserved as were used.

Visit to the fort was very interesting. Specially when you get to know about the contributions done by Tipu Sultan. Kids will love it. But avoid going on weekends or during peak seasons.

Our tour bus drove through and around this after visiting the adjacent sultan's summer palace (well worth a visit in itself ). It's very large, parts of the walls and buildings can be recognised but a lot has been lost. It seems like there's a small town inside it now.

Often quoted as the second most formidable forts in India, the historical fort is located in Sriringapatna island. Formidable because the Kaveri river made the Srirangapatna into a difficult to cross island offering natural defense. The original mud fort in this location was built in 1454 AD by a local chieftain of the region Timmanna Hebbar, under the patronage of the Vijayanagara empire. Subsequently work on the fort was done by Tippu Sultan with the help of French military engineers to meet the defense requirements of the times. However the British forces made an attack on 4 May 1799. Tipu was killed in the battle. The fort had Lal Mahal and Tipu's palace, which were demolished during the British capture. Colonel Bailey's Dungeon, Daria Daulat Bagh, Gumbaj containing tomb of Tipu Sultan, Juma Masjid, spot where Tipu's Body was found, Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple are protected monuments.
Two important gateways – the Mysore Gate and the Elephant Gate – to the fort is facing the highway. You’ll fine a large number of military, religious and civic structures inside Srirangapatna Fort.
One of the better place to see the military architecture of the fort closely is the northwestern part (near the Delhi Gate) is awesome. Walk up to the Obelisk, the war memorial, along the fort walls. You can see on the walls the riffle shooting holes and places where large cannons stood. The legendary Tipu Sultan's residence was inside this fort. Hence, it is also known as Tipu Sultan Fort.
Today, none of the structures within the fort survive, barring the bridges across the two arms of the Kaveri river, from which the bathing ghats and the ramparts can be seen. To the east and the south, a broad moat surrounds the polygonal bastions and turreted parapets constructed by the French engineers employed by Tipu. The Mysore Gate and Elephant Gate, to the south, are flanked by guardrooms. Sultan Battery, the dungeons where Tipu used to keep British prisoners, is to the north; nearby is the Water Gate, where Tipu was killed.

This is a fort where it is not properly marked to understand where it starts and where it ends. However, if you drive around I will see multiple points of attraction. This includes Vishnu Temple, a Jain Temple, Point where Tipu was killed, the gates which were broken when English attacked Tipu and also a big Mosque. An interesting place is where Tipu kept 26 British war prisoners captive and tortured them. Many other historical places are around. Overall a nice time spent.
