Valence house is a very charming and beautifully curated local museum. It has extremely interesting exhibitions and artefacts, and the house itself is fascinating- I especially loved the recently discovered 16th century wall painting! The staff are also incredibly friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. A really lovely day out!

A hidden gem. Spent a very relaxing hour just mooching around. The gardens were not at their best however as it is autumn. Will definitely go back.

As locals we didn’t go to Valance House , grounds and park for many years . Well we decided today we would pop along . It was lovely & informative they have restored it so well . We also found out so much about our area and borough we didn’t know . The history of our area from before the Romans to present date . The Fanshaw family and its influence, the way the new houses were built after WW2 etc .The farms , Abbey and more . Well Worth a visit to see Marie ( at the museum) and then onto the Tulip Tree Tearoom opposite to see Brendon ( in the gift shop ) and the ladies there for a yummy lunch or coffee with a slice of Tudor cake . You can’t miss it , it has an old brown Ford capri outside .
The Garden was lovely to , we will return deffo x
We really enjoyed our visit .
Please do go and support them well worth a visit .

We had heard a great deal about Valence House and we were not disappointed. Very well told story with authentic artefacts. The living room from the past was a particular favourite. Easy to get to and we'll worth a visit.

Amazing hidden gem with enough to do for about three hours. The museum is brilliant and has a great diversity of interests. A lot of ground. Great cafe with amazingly friendly staff
The only disappointment was that the herb gardens were a bit neglected. Possibly due to the hot weather. If I lived nearer I would offer to tidy up the gardens.
Thanks to all the volunteers here.

The Valence House Museum - a well-recognised local historic gem 💎, located behind a medieval moat and urban Valence Park, is yet to be discovered and explored by many local residents, national and international visitors! It was voted by the Guardian as one of the 50 best free 🆓 things to do in London.
It is incredible that you will literally jump back into the historic past of Dagenham as soon as you start your Musuem Tour! Settings and placements of artefacts and information were organised and displayed in such a way that it entices your mind to engage with the heritage! The collections simply take you aback by the sheer number of heritage of Barking and Dagenham!
Valence House, a Grade II Listed early 17th Century Building, organises programmes for all - adults & children and family - throughout the year including competitions, talks, quiz, workshops, arts & crafts, fair and many more! There is a very engaging explorer activity pack "Young Adventurers Trail" for children visiting the museum!
A beautiful community garden - winner of Green Flag and London in Bloom awards - with benches and pergolas are a place to contemplate, relax and enjoy! Herb Garden, as it is known, has two unique features -a replica Anderson Shelter and a World War Two Dig for Victory plot! There are some phenomenal plants on the grounds of the Valence House and Medieval Moat - spectacular veteran evergreen Holm Oak (one of the 61 Great Trees of London), magnificent tulip tree whose orange and yellow flower is the Valence House logo!
Surprising fact is that majority of the land of the Manor House Estate was used to build the Becontree Estate which celebrated its 100th year in 2021 and now undergoing ambitious regeneration programme "Becontree Forever". To make room for the Becontree Estate, the Manor House was earmarked for demolition in 1921 by the London County Council, but it was saved in 1926 when it was purchased by newly formed Dagenham Urban District Council, now known as London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council. Since then, The Valence House was served as Town Hall and then Headquarters of The Library Services until 1974 when The Valence House was opened to public as the local history museum!
It also has modern Visitor Centre with fully accessible toilet & Baby Changing Area, Gift Shop and a Tea Room with outdoor seating. The Barking and Dagenham Archives and Local Studies Centre, located at the visitor centre, holds and preserves a vast collections of informational resources on the place and people of Barking and Dagenham, Essex and London. The Centre provides 🆓 free access to its huge collections along with the free use of Ancestry Library Edition and Find My Past Community Edition.
Nearby Valence Park - built on the land of the Valence Manor Estate - has many sports and recreational facilities including a brand new Playground, state-of-the-art Outdoor Gym, Hype Court featuring artistic court markings, sensory basketball backboards, and fun educational and family focused games! The Medieval Moat (Valence Park Lake) has survived and now closed for Health & Safety reasons! The Lake is great habitat for animals including Swans, Ducks and Birds and many more wildfowl!
Very conveniently, the Valence Park Car Park is FREE 🆓 for visitors. There are couple of Blue Badge disabled parking bays ♿ 🅿 available at the delivery entrance at the end of Margery Road, off Bonham Road.Availability of Car Park is always a great advantage for visitors, in particular, visitors with accessibility needs!
Only improvement needed us to have better information display board with highlighting/locating the key features of the Valence House and its grounds in a map with Interpretation Texts!

I am interested in researching information about Pritchett & Gold working conditions in the 50's and 60's. Do you have much information about this company please? I think Valence House and the information centre are amazing resources. I live in Wales but was born and brought up in Dagenham and visited with my sister who was a Blitz baby. Seeing local children finding their homes on the map and seeing how there locality was affected by bombing was such a good idea for bringing history alive for children. Well done.
