Why Tala Cats is special:
Tala Cats is a sanctuary for many 100s of stray and abandoned cats. They are a seriously good, and worthy cause. The volunteers there work hard on a daily basis to look after these many 100s of cats, to keep them healthy, watered, happy, and fed. They put a lot of work into engaging with people to gather interest for raising funds for the park or individual cats. You can tell that it's a labour of love and that the volunteers really care about what they're doing. There was actually a cat abandoned at the park while we were there, and they dealt with it very quickly and carefully to take the cat in and make sure it was looked after. It seems to be a heartbreakingly frequent thing that they have to deal with, but they're well equipped.
It's easy to fall deeply in love with the cats when you visit, and if you're the sort of person that enjoys fussing the cat you see on a street corner then do I have a strong recommendation for you.
Volunteering:
- We volunteered at the park for a few hours. We turned up at 8 and left at 11. We spent the time helping in any way we could (alongside fussing and cuddling the cats). We cleaned the water bowls and topped up the water, cleaned out a number of the little outdoor cat beds, changed a litter box, put on some laundry, swept and mopped up one of the cat rooms. We did all this while some cats were supervising by either bunting our legs or supervising more closely while propped up on our shoulders.
- We can't stop thinking about our time volunteering. We knew this was something we wanted to do before coming to Cyprus, and the moment we left we both thought - we have to do this again when we come back.
Things we enjoyed:
- The volunteers there were helpful and clear in any directions about how we could help. We learnt a lot about the park and saw a lot of it. We went on a cold day and they even provided gloves and a nice cup of tea to try keep warm while dealing with so much cold water.
- The shop was great, and very reasonable price wise. I bought a hoodie and I've not stopped wearing it since leaving the park. It's super comfortable and clearly very well made.
- The cats. We can't stop thinking about the cats we met there. They were so lovely. There are so many you obviously won't meet them all, but you'll see many of them and a fair number will come to say hello. It's a good mixture of ages and personalities within the cats, and you may well see one (or more) you want to take home. ;-)
Things to keep in mind:
- We took a taxi up and a bus back. The buses are very infrequent so be mindful of the bus timetable so you don't get stranded! Tala is very out of the way from Paphos.
- If you're driving or doing it as part of a tour it's likely better. It's also right next to the monastery which looks incredible and worth a visit. The monastery cafe was closed on the Monday though.
- Especially if you're volunteering, wear clothes you don't mind the risk of getting dirty or damaged. Some cats like to climb!
What you can do:
- Follow Tala Cats on Facebook and Instagram. They regularly post about the park and their fundraising opportunities. You can sponsor a cat (at 60 euros a year), become a member (10 euros a month or 120 euros a year), or donate any amount. At the moment they're also doing Christmas hampers for your chosen kitties which go for 20 euros each.
- Volunteer for a few hours. If you have the time to spare, for sure go volunteer a few hours at the park. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty too. It's such a rewarding experience and we're so desperate to go back.
- If you don't have the time to volunteer, visit and bring some donations. They could always use things like bin bags, cat food etc. They have a list on their website of things they could always do with.
- Visit the park!
Would we go again?
Yes, yes, and yes again.
Would we recommend?
As above. If you're a cat lover then this is an absolute must. It's a cat lovers dream, and such a worthy cause.

Me and my sister are cat lovers and having seen so many street cats here in Cyprus we thought we would head to the Tala cat sanctuary. The volunteers were at work cleaning away and I salute them for all their hard work. A lot of the cats were so very friendly and cuddly and just wanted attention. I hope they find their furrever homes! The owner was telling us you can adopt them and they fly the cats to Heathrow. We brought some cat food for the cats as a donation and also left cash as a donation too. Great work guys. I would recommend if you’re a cat lover like us. ♥️

Bravo to the volunteers who work here. The conditions are far from sanitary but l guess they do their best. The day we went the place smelt truly awful and flies were everywhere - crawling over the cats, in their eyes etc. Maybe it was a few sick cats or maybe a lack of volunteers to clean up the mess - it was heartbreaking to see. The cats were affectionate but we couldn’t wait to get out. Cats loose around the monastery just up the road were free in the environment and were superbly friendly. I wish there was an answer re abandoned cats - maybe the monks have the right idea in letting them free in the environment and providing food and shelter. One cat in the monastery had 3 and 3/4 legs - he was soooo affectionate and l would have loved to adopt him if that had been permitted.

This cat sanctuary is a must see for everyone thinking about having a cat - to see all the sorrow they go through when left abandoned... For me, it was a heartbreaking experience! Most cats were obvioisly sick, having diarrhea and runny noses. There were flies allaround. But still, most cats were seeking our attention, trying to make us hold them, jumping in our laps...
We left sad and heartbroken...
Be a responsible cat owner!

This was such a great place to visit to see the amazing work being done by volunteers. The cats were all so friendly and you couldn’t sit down without them coming to sit on your lap. We brought bags of cat food to give to the staff because they literally have hundreds of mouths to feed. I would go here if you love cats but it’s good to remember that it’s not a petting zoo and the sanctuary has a really serious purpose.

This was simply one of the most beautiful, happiest, cutest experiences I have ever done - everyone must go, I couldn’t recommend it any higher!! Being surrounded by the sweetest little (and large) friendly cats makes for such a wonderful day and I already want to go back! The kind volunteers giving up their time are inspirational and any donations in any form are much needed. I can’t wait to go back it’s a completely magical little sanctuary.

An amazingly sad place the guys are doing a brilliant job looking after the cats/kittens both healthy & not so. The cats are very well looked after & love human attention. If you enjoy lots of cat cuddles do not miss out visit if you can. The volunteers are very grateful for any donations physical or monetary

We visited Tala Cat Park twice during our stay in Cyprus - once wasn't enough! (And to be honest, we would have gone back again if we had time!) The cats are obviously very well cared for and the park is continuously being cleaned. There are special areas for new kittens and cats with serious disabilities but other than that there are literally hundreds of cats for you to meet and cuddle - sit down for a moment and you will have at least two try to get on your lap! Take cat food, toys and money - all very much appreciated by the cats and their human carers!

We visited today we had a hire car and found the place very easily we arrived at about 10am and as soon as your through the gates we were pounced on the cats are all ages from kittens to older cats and they were super friendly as a cat owner and cat lover were used to the cat hair and smells the staff were all friendly but were doing there jobs we saw lots of cleaning up and things bring built but didn't chat yo much there are plenty of places to sit and the cats come to you honestly I loved it and would happily go back there was plenty of food for the cats do we left a money donation in the box well worth a visit

This place was amazing. We took along food as a donation to enter. There were so many cats! I’ve never been anywhere like it. If we hadn’t had a dog at home there were two cats I would have adopted- so loving and full of character. I highly recommend this place if you are an animal lover. They do such a wonderful job looking after all of these strays.

I would love to visit this attraction as I love cats and I have 2 of my own but was wondering how I can get there. I am staying at the queens bay hotel and was wondering if there is a bus I can catch

Hi Julie I haven’t seen a bus going up that way and we always have a hire car and follow the signs going towards Kissonerga, and then follow the signs to Tala. As you get into Tala, you will see a sign for Agios Neophytos Monestry and the cat Park is on the left hand side just a few yards before the monestery

Hi, Do you know if this place is possible to reach by bus? Our granddaughter would like to go when we holiday in Paphos next month.

Hi Sonia,
If you are staying in Kato Pafos, then you would make your way to the harbour bus station and take then 603 or 618 to Karavella bus station.
From Karavella station, you would change to bus 604 to Tala Monastery (final destination), from where you would also catch a bus back into Pafos. You would walk between 7-10min from the Monastery to the Tala Cat Park (it is sign posted).
On pafosbuses. com, you can find the time table of Pafos city and surburbs routes.
Many visitors combine a visit to the monastery (which also has a lovely cafe) with a visit to the Cat Sanctuary (open 10am-2pm every day, and definitely worthwhile setting aside sufficient time for, if your granddaughter is a cat lover :-) ).
