We took a day boat hire from Pennine Cruisers as a family of four (kids 12 & 10). We hadn't been on a narrowboat before.
The boat was scrupulously clean and everything was working perfectly. We were given clear instructions in a friendly and non-patronising matter, and patience for our questions - which I'm sure had been asked many, many times before.
On the advice of our trainer we decided to go to Gargrave and back. That was perfect length for a day trip and the scenery was lovely.
The people of the canal were also extremely friendly and patient. We had a fantastic family day out. We'll return, hopefully for an overnight break.

to get anything for £4 is a challenge these days so a 30 min cruise was a nice touch. dog friendly too.
had a little talk at the beginning but a bit more commentary would be a nice touch.

We hired Carleton (4 berth) for two of us in a double each in March 2023. We had 4 nights and we travelled to Silsden then the 5 rise locks before returning. Bev of Pennine Cruisers gave us loads of information before the trip and then we had Pete give us a fabulous induction and help in turning the boat at the 5 rise locks as we needed his expert help. Then on return we were aided by Pete and Roland. The staff were so helpful and so professional that we are hoping to go again with 2 friends next year. If that happens, we will hire Austwick as it has 4 doubles and two WC / Bathrooms. Thanks Pennine Cruisers - just superb!

Just had a great 4 night short break on nb Airton. Our first time to hire from Pennine Cruisers. The staff were really welcoming, friendly and helpful. The boat was very clean and had all the bedding we had asked for on the booking form. We really liked Airton. It's a solid, stable boat, not 'tippy', and well ballasted. The engine is very smooth and relatively quiet. Very happy that there were no annoying rattles (eg from loose door-catches) inside the boat whilst on the move. The tiller was responsive with no play, morse control likewise. The galley is well designed, with a good amount of cutlery, crockery, good sized glasses, all the pans etc we needed, without the cupboards being stuffed full with niche items. There was lots of space for food storage, and a fridge with separate freezer compartment. Sleeping on the dinette, the upholstered cushions are very flat and comfortable (very firm). We chose the boat largely for it's solid fuel stove. There was sufficient kindling provided for about 1.5 lightings and coal for about 1.5 afternoons/evenings, but we asked for and were given more. There was no fire mitt though, nor bucket for hot ash. (The boat has a webasto heater as well which heats the radiators, but we didn't use it). The stove air vent is open in a fixed position, which was perfect for keeping the fire in once going, but therefore needed a bit more kindling and time than usual to get going. Might be worth noting that there were no folding/picnic chairs provided, nor a hairdryer. Tip for the shower-turn it straight onto maximum to get the hot water running through - after a few hours cruising, obviously. At the stern there's a large airing cupboard, a couple of useful small cubby holes and a coat cupboard. There are drawers under the beds. These aside, the storage space wasn't the best. There is nowhere to put wet/dirty shoes and boots. They accumulated at the bottom of the rear steps in the galley and were constantly tripped over. Although there is lots of storage space for clothes and other personal items, its not all very useable. Most of the space is large wardrobes with a hanging rail at the top but no shelves. The sort of clothes we take boating don't really need hanging up, so these wardrobes were of limited use to us. There is very little open shelving in the boat so things tended to have to be kept in big bags in the bottom of the cupboards which made it annoying and difficult to find things. The saloon is particularly lacking in shelves for the clutter which otherwise accumulates on the table and for the people sleeping on the dinette to put personal items overnight. There's also notably only two tiny, inadequate shelves in the main bathroom. We were advised to expect some issues with charging and battery power. There was apparently some question as to whether the batteries were charging at low revs or when the engine was in neutral. Overall though, since we cruised quite long hours, and we didn't use the webasto or the TV, the questionable battery charging/battery health didn't cause us any real problems. Thank you Pennine Cruisers. We hope to return.

I think it's the 5th year in a row we've hired from Pennine Cruisers, it's a works outing and it can be diffuclut to schedule around our shifts. This means that we've have to ask to alter dates or on one occasion, postpone but the staff have always been understanding & helpful which is really appreciated.
The boats are always clean & with everything you could need included, good clear instructions are given before you set off so you can't really go wrong. Given the choice I'd go towards Gargrave rather than Kildwick, it has nicer views, less bridges to deal with & you have time to stroll into Gragrave for an hour or so before heading back to Skipton.

This is the fifth time I have been on one of these day boat hire trips and I cannot recommend enough if you are visiting Skipton.
Boats are equipped with cutlery, crockery, a hob & kettle. There is a small toilet cubicle and a main seating area. Full operating instructions are given and advice on types of bridges encountered.
We got to Kildwick and back with a couple of stop offs within the time. A really good day out.

We had such a wonderful boat ride on the 11/09/2022 however one of the staff called Adam, to say it was our first time driving a boat. When we came back I thought he was rude, impatient and critical, shaking your head making us feel so small and you was so patronising speaking to us when you got on the boat. I’m surprised how you speak and treat your customers, really disappointed. To say I bought this as a gift for my dad and my sisters birthday with friends. What a rubbish way to end the boat trip and I will definitely not be coming back and won’t be recommending this to friends and families.

Hired a narrowboat for the morning from Skipton to Garsgrave. We had excellent tuition and really enjoyed the freedom of setting off on our own. Took our dogs with us and now want a canal barge holiday.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 30 minute jaunt on the “Sam”. It was a great start to a really lovely visit to Skipton. It wasn’t planned and we happened to be walking into Town from the car park when we saw the tour boat - glad we took the detour. It was peaceful and quiet and although it was only a short sailing, we were able to see beautiful wildlife, buildings and parts of the canal that we would have otherwise missed.

Rented 2 boats recently with friends for a day's outing. Staff were super friendly and set us up perfectly for the day. The boats were perfect (we had Bill & Ben) and really well kitted out. Have a lovely few hours chugging a few miles out of Skipton and back again. A lovely part of the world and a great way to see it.

Hello we do allow dogs on our 30 minute boat trips and always have. Our trip boats are open not inclosed, so dogs are more than welcome.

Are the boats suitable for a wheel chair user?

Hello Catherine, With our day boats there isnt room inside to maneuver a wheelchair no. However there is plenty of seating inside the boat and outside at the front of the boat which is very comfortbale. We have had lots of groups in the past some who may need the use of a wheelchair and we always give you a helping hand on board.
Trip boat wise there again is no room for wheelchair access, however there is a company called SCAD who operate in Skipton offering trips for those with a wheelchair, as they are a widebeam boat with easier acces on to the boat.

Only just seen this question. From Skipton there is a substantial section towards Bingley with no locks but plenty of bridges.

In regards to the day boats we have boats for either 4 people or 10 people.
During the week (Monday - Friday) (Excluding bank holidays)

Weekends or bank holiday

Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. Our 30 minute boat trips run everyday from 11.30am at this time of year, however in the next 2 weeks we will run from 10.30am. There is no need to book you simple pop down and queue behind the A-Frame board and pay once you are seated on board. If you have any further questions please contact us. Leanne :)
