The house is fascinating, lots of thing to see (including a buried, mummified cat!)
The grounds are extensive and beautifully presented

Spent half a day here with friends. Plenty to see with the castle, house and gardens. The staff in the house were very informative and knowledgeable. Great views from the castle but quite a climb to get up there on foot. Disabled are, I believe, allowed dispensation to drive up there if you ask.

Lots to see, plenty of reading material for information, has a lift which is helpful and indoor and outdoor cafe facilities, many acres for walking and dog friendly

Mixed views of our visit. Lovely location, and delightful grounds/parkland. Sadly the house has very little of the original furnishings so it is less easy to imagine how life might have been during the house’s heyday. Some parts of the house showed signs of needing maintenance, but it was good that the house at least has been saved. A somewhat dark and almost dour exterior, but probably reflective of Jacobean times. The tulips in the garden at the rear of the house were simply stunning,

National Trust House with large ground, good with nice weather 👌.
A herd of fallow dear within the grounds.
National Trust 🚗 car park.
Guided tour around the house if required (well the day we visited)
Lots of History on Catherine Howard ( not wife of Henry 8th)
Tudor association links though very interesting 🤔.

The best National Trust property I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. Fantastic enthusiastic staff with games for children. It’s not one of those places where you’re not allowed near anything. Beautiful grounds and gardens and the walk to the ruined 13th century castle is lovely and worthwhile with amazing views to greet those who do it. If you’re in the area, this is a must visit. It’s a full day out.

What a lovely house to visit with young children. We often go to national trust houses with our young family but have to nervously guide them round in a bit of a hurry. However here, they have lovely wooden games for the kids to play on the way round allowing us to sit and relax and enjoy our beautiful surroundings.
No playground here but absolutely fine with us and the cafe was great for families too.

Unlike any National Trust property we have been to before. It was very relaxed and comfortable to walk around, with a very warm atmosphere. Lots of information and interesting items to see. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
I think the history is still being investigated and so there is no guide book, at the moment, as they are still discovering information about the property and former inhabitants. This is a shame but understandable and something to look forward to in the future. Perhaps some information sheets with what thy do know to take away in the interim would be a good idea?
Car parking was easy with our NT cards being scanned there and no need to show them again.
No NT shop (shame, as I love them) but an excellent second hand bookshop.
The cafe was great with a limited menu but enough for needs. I can recommend the beef cawl, which was delicious but I would not have the lemon and orange cake again (dry and the topping was like marmalade). My husband really enjoyed his bacon bap and shortbread slice.
The staff here were again very friendly and helpful but the service was a little slow.
We found the fairy village very sweet and it amused us - I imagine children will love it - and whilst we didn't have the time to explore further, there is plenty more to see, if you have the time.
Overall a lovely property to visit and we look forward to returning in a couple of years to see what more it has to offer.

Regular visitors to this National Trust property. Lots of great walks in the grounds, in the Deer Park, up (steep!) to the old castle and through the grounds. Nice cafe with excellent mocha, gingerbread latte and cheese scones as a reward for all the walking.

How suitable would the walk be for a pram guys?
MacRossiter
Chipping Sodbury, UK63 مساهمة
A few of the paths would be fine for a pram, for instance the Bog Boardwalk (which is down a somewhat steep but paved lane behind Newton House). The track from the house/parking to the castle would support a rugged pram, but it would be a bit of a slog. Other paths in the park, for instance through Castle Woods or around the Capability Brown walk via the Rookery--no.

is it dog friendly? can you walk to the castle without having to climb over stiles?
SarahRJ4
كامبريدج, UK14 مساهمة
Yes it is dog friendly and no stiles to climb over but a gate to open on the way to the castle. The cafe on the way up to the castle was dog friendly. We saw a few dogs there during our visit too. I believe the only place dogs were not allowed was in the deer park and the main house. Hope that helps!

Yes, at the house on the ground floor but would be almost impossible to reach the Castle.
