As you can see the mill in action it gives a good idea of what the mill produced and the work involved. The guide was very knowledgeable and knew his stuff so could answer any questions relating to the linen production process and the history of the mill and how it got to be there.

I came across this place in the National Trust Handbook. It is well worth a visit, although make sure it is open before you make the journey. It opens at weekends March to September. It can be combined with a visit to Springhill House in nearby Moneymore. You will get an amazing guided tour of the mill, and learn how linen was made from start to finish. Tours operate on the hour from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
Watch the water mill in action and hear the noise inside the mill as they start up the machinery. There is also a lovely river walk if it's a fine day.

As a 77 year old I can remember this as a working mill and Willie John Black as the operator, you could have heard the thump of the beeters as the did the work on the linen and I have visited it on other occasions to show to visitors and to let them see some of the amount of work that went into making Irish linen the world famous product that it was. Well worth a visit for all ages.

Lovely setting by a river. The beetling mill had been restored, with in costume guides to explain the whole process. You can go outside and follow the stream down through the wooden sluice to the water wheel. This drives all the machinery inside, especially the wooden blocks that hit the linen fibers - part of the beetling process.. The linen industry was incredibly valuable to producers, and this gives you a great insight into how it all happened.
There's also a car park outside beside a picnic area, looking out over the mill race. Worth a visit

It was a bit of a miserable day when we visited and we almost didn’t stay for the tour. So glad that we did. Barbara was an excellent guide who really brought the linen making process to life. And when the beetling mill sprang to life...amazing!

Despite the fact that we were the last tour of the day, our amazing guide Zachary showed no concern for his own time- only to ensure that we were well informed and that all of our questions were answered. He was passionate and engaging throughout our tour and I would highly recommend.

This is a hidden gem. It showcases the history of linen making, from the growing of flax to the finished product. Visitors are shown round by volunteers who are clearly very enthusiastic and enjoy sharing their knowledge. Everything is explained with great clarity and at the end of the tour you can see (and hear!) the machinery in action.
Any visit to Northern Ireland should include an opportunity to learn about the linen industry which was so important to the area - here is a perfect place to explore it.
The grounds are beautiful and visitors should follow the well-defined path at the back of the mill.
This was a very enjoyable visit.

The 2 volunteer guides fitted the 2 of us in for a tour given by Aine. Although arriving towards the end of admission time, we were greeted with warmth as though their first customers of the day; I knew we were in for a treat. Aine had a clear desire to share her knowledge and enthusiasm not only for the mill and its workings but also for the traditions and crafts of the local area. The actual machinery used in all stages of the linen making we found captivating and didn't want the tour to end. It was an excellent introduction to Ulsters linen industry: from sowing of flax seeds to the finished product. Highly recommended to anyone visiting this area or those who want to increase their knowledge of Ulsters industrial history beyond that of a tourist!
Do check opening times, as run by proud volunteers, who did a good job.
