We took a chance to go out for a couple of hours on The Bann river when the weather was dry. Although there's a covered area it is more enjoyable in good weather. We had a lovely time. All for of us (all over 18) took a turn steering, very entertaining especially for those of us who couldn't manage to go in a straight line!

We had been meaning to do this since last summer but hadn't got round to it.
With the kids off school and a day to spare we decided to do it, and glad we did.
The safety aspect was just common sense, so straight forward.
We opted for the 2hour hire at £35 but wished we had taken the 4 hour hire at £70. We managed to get to Mount Sandel forest for a quick wander onshore then down towards Portstewart in the 2 hour timeframe. It can be slow going coming back up the river fighting the current, but sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
You don't have to be a boat expert to control the boat, it's very straightforward and the owner explains everything before embarking on your voyage.

Simple little boat- excellent value and a gorgeous stretch of river. Had a wonderful morning on the Bann river. Lots to see. Boat easy to manoeuvre. Owner was friendly and helpful. Took our dog on the boat too. Would recommend.

I thought this was very good value, £35 for 2h including fuel. Boat is a decent size, and tootles along at a relaxing speed. Scenery out towards the Barmouth end of the estuary is amazing. Not that many other boats around, and reasonably calm water on what was maybe the hottest day this year. Lovely.

Lovely way to spend the day! We were very lucky with the weather. Shalimar was a fantastic instructor. The boats themselves were in great condition and amazing value for money. Plenty to see and do along the way.

After brief instructions and being issued with a life jacket you get to cruise your hired craft up and down the river Bann. The outboard motor is a little under-powered but I suppose that is to prevent a novice going too fast!

Bann Boat Hire is a new (2015) seasonal operation based at The Crannagh Marina, a mile NW of Coleraine on the east bank of the River Bann, For context, Crannagh Marina is right beside the popular “Crusoes at The Crannagh” restaurant and combining a meal and a leisure cruise makes for a very enjoyable half or even full day out.
LOCATION:
Crannagh Marina is located approximately a third of a mile north west of the Borough Council Offices, down a short lane to the west of the main A2 Portstewart Road. Although the lane is un-named and not shown on some maps, its entrance now sports several bright signs and banners. Don’t drive too fast and you won’t miss it. My photos should help.
There is ample parking beside the pontoon jetties and the VERY pleasant and helpful owner operates out of a rather nice motor launch, clearly signed “Bann Boat Hire OFFICE!”
It’s obviously sensible to phone his mobile phone in advance, to make sure that a boat will be available when required, rather than just turning up unannounced, although that can work too, if it’s not too busy.
He will sign you up for your self-drive cruise, fit you with light-weight, automatic life jackets and give you the simple and clearly printed instructions for rules of the river and how to operate the little pleasure boats. You will also get two mobile phone numbers, just in case you get into difficulties. That is VERY unlikely, but it’s such a reassuring precaution.
The six small, but sturdy, outboard powered boats can seat up to six adults OR four adults with four children and they are all brand new (the boats!).
They are easy to operate, although steering can be quite twitchy, depending on wind and river/tidal currents. But that is part of the FUN! Boats can be hired for 2 hours, half day (4 hours), full day (8 hours), so you can choose to have a short trip or make it an all-day affair. You can even choose to extend your trip while still out on the water, as long no one else is waiting for it. Just phone the boss on your mobile and he will do everything he can to oblige – a genuinely friendly and helpful man.
Do wear soft soled shoes suitable for a boat and take a light jacket in case the weather deteriorates on your voyage. Do take a camera, for unfamiliar river views of otherwise familiar surroundings and there can be quite a bit of bird life in, on and over the river. Oh, and take a mobile phone, ‘just in case’.
There is a light weight folding canopy up front in case of showers and whoever is skipper is provided with a fully waterproof garment.
Two hours is good for a very first trip. But by all means book more as two hours can pass remarkably quickly when you are enjoying yourself! In our two hours, we gently toodled up-river to The Cutts (The Salmon Leap), passing under the Bann Railway Bridge, past Coleraine quayside, then under the new Pedestrian and Old Road Bridges in Coleraine. Strange to be looking UP at the traffic! On reaching the un-navigable rapids at The Cutts, there is an option to by-pass the rapids by using The Cutts Lock. That costs a very reasonable £1 each way, but it does take time and you should phone the lock keeper in advance. On this first short trip, we elected to turn back to our base at The Crannagh. On returning, with half an hour of our two hours still in hand, we went down river for a mile or so and then back up to The Crannagh, dead on our time frame. We both enjoyed this leisurely, relaxing trip very much indeed and will definitely do it again, probably going further up-river towards Kilrea, with a picnic on-board, next time.
Unless you hate boats, there is simply nothing to not like about this gentle activity! It's very enjoyable indeed and highly recommended for any age group. The little town of Coleraine can only benefit from this kind of enterprise.
