Staying in Ashford in the Water we popped into Bakewell several times during our week’s holiday as only a 20 minute journey
Parking is quite expensive but plenty of places to park
Nice shops and started our Christmas shopping early. Couldn’t resist going to the Bakewell Tart Shop to bring back treats for the family.
We were blessed with gorgeous sunny weather and enjoyed walking our lunch off walking along the river- there’s a bridge that is completely covered in padlocks
Definitely worth a visit when I’m the area. There is a farmers market once a month which we visited on our first day there

We visited Bakewell again for a wander in the late afternoon sunshine once the busy-ness of the day had died down a bit. At this time the riverside isn't quite so busy so it offered peace and tranquillity for us and our dog

I've chosen the River Wye to review as it gives me the opportunity to also say something about Bakewell. The not too deep River Wye runs through the town and is clearly a popular sight with interesting bridges crossing it and an abundance of bird life on the water.
As for Bakewell itself, I thought it was a really lovely town. The centre isn't marred by modern buildings so has retained a lot of character. The centre is mostly on the flat and not too large, making a walk through it quite pleasurable. It's not all Bakewell Tart shops or tacky gift shops and there are quite a few places where you can stop for a coffee and cake etc.
Don't be put off by the hills on the south side of the town. A visit to the Old House Museum is recommended but if you don't fancy going that far, just take in some of the streets leading up the hill.
If you have the time, I think it quite possible to spend 5, 6 or 7 hours exploring Bakewell. Super place.

We were on a coach tour of the Peak District being based at the Jurys Inn Hotel in Derby. This particular day we were enroute to Chatsworth House but we had a stopover in Bakewell for around 2 hours.
In walking into town from the coach park we had to cross the Weir Bridge across the River Wye and were surprised to see hundreds, if not thousands, of padlocks attached to the bridge railings. We later learned that they are regarded as 'love locks' whereby the name of an individual or a couple of people is engraved on the padlock and after it is attached the key is flung into the river so that the padlock cannot be unlocked. I think that the practice has its origins in a similarly adorned bridge in Paris.
Apart from the bridge with its many locks it was encouraging to see a wrole range of waterfowl on the river, surely a good indication of the cleanliness of the river at this point.

Strolling beside the river was very pleasant on hot day. Occasionally stopping to sit on a bench we saw the skirmishes taking place between the different birds with the larger ones always winning out

Nice to sit beside this river and watch the ducks, geese and swans, not to mention the large trout.
Also had a pleasant walk through Scots Garden to Holme Hall and a 17th century packhorse bridge.

Had a great time after a wedding in the Town Hall, with champagne and canapés on the river, and a lovely backdrop for photos.

We enjoyed our visit to Bakewell and the River was a lovely way to spend time but we particularly enjoyed the Wye at Ashford in the water.
This village was delightful and my wife and I were mesmerised by the River and wildlife particularly the many trout that were leaping up and snatching the bread that was being thrown to the many ducks.
The River is extremely clear and a lovely relaxing place to sit.

Beautiful scenery - very tame ducks and some huge fish clearly visible in the crystal clear water. If you are in Bakewell, its well worth a stroll down to the rever bridge and along the bank.

The car park is said to be 'Pay and Display'. Does it accept debit cards, or does it require a phone app, and if so, which?

The car park accessed from the Matlock road does take coins. I used this park only 5/6 weeks ago when the fair was in town. Some of the Dales car parks do take cards or ring a number to pay by phone. Hope this helps.

We are looking for a walk in The Peak District/Derbyshire, that is ideally in a loop so we can return to where we started and pushchair friendly. A pub would be nice also to get lunch but not essential. Can anyone advise if this walk meets the criteria? Or failing that, is there one that is? Thanks

A better bet would be to park in Baslow and walk around the Chatsworth estate. That's better for pushchairs and there are several excellent pubs and restaurants in Baslow.
is there fishing near by
