My sister and I are visiting the house tomorrow. I remember may afternoons playing in the house and grounds. I loved Mrs White she was very like a grandmother to us. She loved the house and this is a fitting memorial for days gone by and a great legacy for the White family.

This is one of those places lost in time, and reflects the manic development of Sydney. A wonderful federation house, now completely surrounded by concrete tower blocks. Hugely ironic as I don't expect the surroundings will stand the test of time, and be looked at in any way with nostalgic fondness. Sydney is being more and more displaced by planning and developer greed into a HK style location where stark concrete rules the day. This is a lovely memory of what would have been green vegetated land, now long gone.

The oldest wooden building in North Sydney makes a good starting point for a museum. Don Bank personally is of unknown origin, yet this house forms a living tapestry of life in North Sydney, since it was built in the first half of the 19th Century. The history of the house is shown in the walls, particularly within the front reception room. The meager $2.00 entry fee goes towards preserving this historic building for future generations. A gracious volunteer takes about 10 minutes to open up the windows, turn on the lights, open the shutters and hang the various signs around the premises, and on Sundays sits for 2 hours, answering questions and proving excellent commentary for anyone who happens by. I am most impressed by the young lady that was present today and her knowledge of the house and North Sydney. The rooms appear original, though furniture is sparse and the house is furnished with historic items either bequeathed to or collected by the Museum. It is unfortunate that several years past between the time the White family occupied the house and when it was bought by North Sydney Council, so there is little in the way of tangible heirlooms representing its history. Nevertheless, it is real historic house and the collection represents the era. There are lots of historic buildings in Sydney with lots of antiques fill their walls, but this is a small and quaint museum in a fast, developing environment and it sits like a silent sentinel showing times past. Worth a 10 minute sit in the garden prior to opening, just to feel the ambiance of the place. Recommended for a visit on Sundays.

A beautiful part of history. The good old cottage has resisted the accumulated years.Very well preserved, to the credit of the local government with help from dedicated people.

For those who like to step back a couple of hundred years and also a sanctuary from the city. House, from memory, open Wednesday (check web for hours) and only a couple of dollars entry. Garden (small) open all the time BUT currently all closed for landscaping.
I am so glad this little piece of history has been retained and maintained. A modest event but a comfort nonetheless.

An interesting old building and good to see that it has been retained. It needs more in the exhibition because without furniture etc there is not much to see and the information is a little sparse. I did find out more in the local library which had quite a lot about the history of North Sydney. It was easy to find the building and the front yard must have been lovely when new.

This cottage is more than a mueseum to me , you see its the place where my mother was born and grandparents lived. Its the place where my parents held their wedding reception and where we spent many years celebrating family traditions of Christmas Lunches and even just lunch with cousins. The grassy sloped front lawn was often the place as a child I would lie horizontally on and roll down then as I became itchy from the grass would try and deny to my mum that I had indeed been rolling on the lawn again . The place where out the back in the laundry we were always warned not to touch the washing mangle because it would squash our tiny fingers! This is a house where for many years we heard music played on the Piano in the front lounge and for many years we sat at the huge kitchen table helping grandma with the weekly cooking of her special "little cakes" for her brother Owen and her wonderful Christmas Puddings with the sixpences and threepences in it that had brandy poured over and lit on Christmas Day . This is the house where the baker delivered bread via the "back lane" and the butcher delivered meat the same way . This is the house where Pa's toolshed at the end of the verandah was most definetly out of bounds, the house that survived all the multi storey construction that went on around it year after year and sadly it was the house where my grandmother passed quietly away , the house that stood empty for many years until the council eventually decided it was worth preserving. This is the house that we can now proudly show our families and that we can remember all the great times we had there. This is the house that needs to share its history so take the time to look around and perhaps see what I see, hear the voices of my parents and grandparents as they celebrate all the good times that were had in the cottage thats now a museum . Just remember this house was a home to be proud of . Thank you .
