This wasn't something I expected to find passing through Sneem but the memorial gives you all the information you need about why it is there and the connection of President DeGaulle to the area. It was good to see.

Sneem is a beautiful village with lots of unexpected finds.
Personally I had been unaware of De Gaulle’s connection with Sneem so I was quite intrigued when I discovered this memorial.
The quote, in French, is very touching & the translation is provided.
Worth visiting while strolling through this picturesque village.

c'est au court d'un arrêt que nous avons vu cette stèle dédié au général de Gaulle , en ce qui me concerne je n'y ais pas trouvé beaucoup d'intérêts sauf bien sûr pour les fans du général

Sneem has a lot of history and for those who don't know much (or who know a lot) about de Gaulle, this will still be a surprise. The monument in and of itself isn't that interesting, but is one of many monuments on Sneem's two village squares that make a nice walk through the village.

et la suite est ...":être en face de moi même.L'Irlande me l'a offert de la façon la plus délicate,la plus amicale" et c'est daté du 18 juin 1969.
Cette phrase est gravée sur un bloc de pierre en dessous de l'effigie du Général de Gaulle sculptée sur une plaque en bronze.
Le mémorial a été réalisé par la commune 25 ans après le séjour de deux semaines du Général en mai 1969.
Nous l'avons découvert par hasard en traversant Sneem charmant village de l'anneau du Kerry.
Si nous savions que l'Irlande avait été le lieu de retraite de Charles de Gaulle après le rejet du référendum sur la régionalisation et la réforme du Sénat et sa démission,personne ne savait que c'était ici

Welch schöne Geste ist dieses Denkmal! Nachdem de Gaulle nach abgelehntem Referendum den angekündigten Rücktritt vom Amt des Französischen Präsidenten am 28.4.1969 vollzogen hatte, reiste er nach Irland.
Dort äußerte er am 18.6.69, dass er hier in Irland gefunden habe, was er suchte: sich selbst zu erkennen.
Dabei habe sich Irland für ihn auf die behutsamste, freundlichste Art erwiesen.
Das Foto der englischen Übersetzung daneben füge ich bei, auf dem großen Gedächtnisstein ist der Original-Text neben seinem Abbild zu lesen.
Pompidou folgte ihm als Präsident, de Gaulle starb im Folgejahr 1970.
Mit Adenauer verbindet ihn den Wunsch nach dauerhaftem Frieden & Freundschaft.

This is a memorial to Charles De Gaulle and commemorates his visit to Sneem and his appreciation of the village and its inhabitants. After De Gaulle left the office of the president of France in 1969, he needed to just get away from it all and chose Sneem for this purpose. The memorial is located on a corner of the square. It consists of a bronze plaque mounted on a large piece of native stone. Inscribed on it is this quote: "At this grave moment of my long life, I found here what I sought, to be face to face with myself, Ireland gave me that, in the most delicate, the most friendly way." What a very touching tribute to the town and its people.

This memorial fits in with the beautiful and rugged surrounding since it is a carving onto a slab of rock that looks like it is also from the area. Although I would not go out of my way to see this memorial, it is worth a quick look and photo op. It shows how people from all over travel here to appreciate the beauty of this island, including retired French presidents.
