Well we took a bus load of senior there the boat was late we missed a hour and a half of our time no truthful explanations left standing and waiting

We thought it was expensive before we went, but it was well worth the money.
An excellent and interesting afternoon with our entertaining guide, Fionnan telling us the history of the island as we went up to the fort.
A lovely walk around the island with spectacular views of Cobh and Cork Harbour.
We will go again next time we are in the area.

After a short ferry ride across the harbour, our tour guide Peter met us at the pier. His tour was very engaging as he went over the whole history of Spike Island. I was very impressed with his knowledge. I would definitely suggest taking the tour.
When we went, it was very windy, especially down by the pier. I would suggest bringing a jacket if you are going in the late summer. It was well worth it though.

Whilst our party were all keen to visit Spike Island the experience completely surpassed all our expectations.
Following a short boat ride we were met by Euan, our incredibly knowledgeable tour guide who was so skillful at bringing the dark and painful history of the once prison to life. Euan managed to weave historical detail with stories and folklore in a rich and entertaining way that managed to capture the imagination yet not lose sight of the brutality and pain that faced those incarcerated within its walls.
Once the formal part of the tour was over we were free to explore many of the historical buildings within the grounds. Unfortunately we had to leave after 3 hours as we were travelling on up the coast but we could easily have spent most of the day there.

Wonderful tour. Ewan was an excellent guide! Very informative. Lots of history. VERY windy this day and glad I had a warm hat!

The place was stunning, it’s like time has stopped in that island. It was amazing to see the cells and the things that the prisoners used to use and to do. Totally recommend visiting the island, you’ll be surprised.

Great trip and really enjoyed the time on Spike Island. The walk around the fort is a must. Euan our guide fantastic and very professional.

Highly recommended. Lots of history and politics and great scenery! Our guide Euan was brilliant. Amazing passion and storytelling. He was knowledgeable, funny and entertaining and brought the island’s past to life. Well worth the short boat trip over. Good selection of sandwiches, cakes and snacks too at the cafe.

What a great tour ..so informative. Noel was our excellent tour guide and would have loved to have had him speak about the island more. Fantastic views from the Island - panoramic - we were especially fortunate with the weather which really enhances our experience

Wonder day so much to see and do. Spend three and half hour there could spend a lot of more time there. Shame it's so expensive to go across to it.
On a down side the quiz for children if there was some prize when they handing it back ( free pension). The digital app was so hard to understand and make it work

Why were the staff let go after having to fight for toilet facilities and being told they can wash their hands with a tap along the pier that fishermen use to wash out their buckets.

Hi, can I go to Spike Island without a guided tour?
Also, what are the return times for the ferry from Spike Island to come back to Cobh?

Hi there, the guided tour is included in the ticket price and it is optional. The ticket price is one price for the ferry, guided tour and island access.
We normally have 2/3 boats a day in the quiet season and 6/8 boats a day in summer, see the website for definite times. Your return is automatically reserved for 3.5 hours after you sail, so 12pm would be 3.30pm, etc. The island has over a dozen musuems and exhibitions as well as scenic island walks and a cafe, you would easily fill this time. But you are very welcome to change to an earlier or later return time if there is space on another sailing. You simply visit the gift shop on site with your ticket and they will advise you of the options. There is generally space to go back at different times, if it was essential you could let us know in advance so we could give you the options.

Hi John, we will have our dog with us all day & would like to visit Spike Island - has the ferry come on board yet that allows dogs?

I don't know. The ferry we were on was very full. Rows of seats.Perhaps a guide dog? As there are nesting birds and other ground wild life I imagine that loose dogs would be forbidden.

Is it far to walk from the ferry to the entrance and cafe. One of our party has limited walking abilities

it is about half a mile from ferry to cafe etc,but it is all up a fairly steep hill.there is a bus though on the island for people with mobility issues and will be there when you exit the ferry.You will be well looked after by the staff there.

HI On the website the times are in 3 and a half hour slots. Would the 2pm ferry then be back in Cobh by 5.30pm . We are visiting by cruise ship to Cobh . Thanks

Hi, I dont think you would be back by 5.30pm sharp, from memory I believe ferry leaves at 5.30pm, its a 10/20 minute journey each way because the ferries dont take the same route out and back. You get to see a bit extra from the boat such as Irish Naval Base and maybe a seal or two on the rocks. Also its popular so a few minutes to disembark. Best to go earlier, come back earlier and have a wander around Cobh before getting back on the cruise ship.
