My husband I visited the Cobh Heritage Centre while in a guided group tour through Ireland. My husband has Irish ancestors, but there were a lot of gaps in his family’s history due to inaccurate records and birthdates. The genealogists at Cobh were very helpful - they patiently sat and explained all the different ways we could find more records and miraculously they were able to locate his ancestors records, including marriage dates, a photo of the grave, and even a corrected date of birth and census records. We discovered that his ancestors were not from Co. Cork as his family had thought - but rather from Co. Carlow and Co. Wexford - and that a lot of Irish immigrants to the U.S. left from Co. Cork and wrote that on their immigration paperwork when arriving into America. It was enlightening and exciting to trace back his heritage- and we really couldn’t have done it without their help. A big thank you to Christie who spent so much time patiently helping us, and explaining everything- we really found out more than we could have dreamed.

Really nice small village,close to the sea,with beautiful and unique architecture. Is one place you need to visit ,when you will be in Ireland. It doesn’t have much to see,but the village alone,it’s really beautiful.

This is a well thought out display. It takes you along in chronological order with good quality displays. It starts with the 1600’s and the political prisoners and “involuntary” indentured servants sent to the United States and progresses to modern day. As history has told, there are a lot of sad stories. As a way to keep your interest, you’re given a boarding pass with a name, to check out their journey. We spent much longer here than we expected

The Heritage Centre is marvelous, yet sobering and thought provoking, telling the story of the millions of people who left Ireland through the port of Cobh from the 17th century onwards. Cobh is the last port of call of the Titanic on its fateful voyage in 1912 and in 1915 the ocean liner Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine nearby. The survivors were brought to Cobh and most of the bodies of people recovered are buried in Cobh. On entry, each person is given a ticket with the name of an emigrant and thechallenge is to find their story somewhere in the museum. I was assigned Edward Colley a 37 year old engineer who had the misfortune to sail on the Titanic, and who unfortunately, was not one of the survivors.

This is a MUST if you are visiting Cobh. Chronicles Emigration from this port from the 1600's for all its various reasons and is a most comprehensive exhibition. I imagine one could spend a couple of hours before repairing to their coffee shop to digest all...mind you with a 9year old in tow we had a "whistle-stop tour" as she endeavoured to answer all the Quiz Questions on the A4 sheets provided by lady at ticket desk, so she was "engaged" but not for young children I dont think. Its a marvellously laid out and informative exhibition and next time I'm in the area, I shall visit again, in adult-only company!!

This heritage centre is located in former railway buildings on the quayside at Cobh. It is literally a 2 minute walk from the station or from a visiting cruise ship as was our case. You can enter the premises without payment where there are a couple of shops and a small cafe. There is an admission charge for the heritage centre. The story if that of Irish emigration and the rural life of Ireland and how it was affected by the potato famine. Well worth a visit - learnt a lot did not realise how many irish people emigrated to England, USA, Canada and Colonies.

My family will be in Cork over the upcoming Easter weekend. We would like to visit the Cobh Heritage Centre on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017. What hours will the centre be open that day? Using public transportation to visit from Cork, will the train schedule be impacted by the religious holiday? Does the cruise ship industry use this port all year long? Should one expect much cruise ship passenger traffic at the center on Easter Sunday?

1. The Heritage Centre will be open on Easter Sunday 9.30 to 18.00
2. The Trains schedule will be the normal Sunday times
3. There will be no Cruise Liners in on that day - there will be one in on the
following day (Monday)

I had sent a note to the genealogy person but have not gotten a response to my inquiry. We will be at your center on Aug. 15th. in the am. I would like to work with a genealogist as this was what is bringing to Ireland. I was told that you do not always have on available. Would someone please get back to me on this. Thank you, Diane

I don't get involved with that sort of stuff, however I did note that there wasn't a facility available at the visitor centre as far as I could see. There were some very good displays and really good information about the Titanic herself, life on board tc.

My husband and I will be in Cobh on Wednesday August 12. Our ship arrives at 10 AM. Can we purchase tickets in advance to the Heritage Centre? What is the cost of tickets? Thank You.

Thankou for your enquiry. yes, tickets may be purchased online using paypal on our website . Unfortunately our site is down for a few days so do not purchase until the end of the week at least. Tickets can also be purchased when you arrive in Cobh and we are situated right beside the quay where you will berth. Tickets are €9.50 per person ( €7.50 for seniors). We look forward to welcoming you to Cobh Heritage Centre"The Queenstown story"
