Buckle up for a breath-taking ride through hair pin turns but the views were worth the trip. Watch out for the sheep and tour buses.

We did 3 days of the Beara Way hiking route, which must be done on foot and does not follow the roads. If you are into long-distance hiking, this is a great route. We didn't do the entire Beara Way; instead, we drove to Castletownbere, left our car there, and hiked to Allihies, and then to Eyeries. In each town we stayed in B&Bs. There are companies that arrange these hiking tour packages, but we saved some money by just doing it ourselves. The B&Bs will transfer your luggage for a fee (ranging from 5-25 Euros), so you can just carry a day pack.
Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, and rain gear. The weather can change abruptly, so we sometimes had sunshine, wind, and lashing rain all within a few hours and needed to be prepared for anything.
It's also possible to do some nice loop hikes or day hikes from Glengariff, Castletownbere, Alliehies, and Lauragh, so you can experience parts of the Beara Way without doing the through-hikes.
The Beara Way includes small paved roads near towns, dirt roads higher in the mountains, and less well-marked rough trails high in the mountains, so the hiking is a mixture of various types of terrain. In order to take this on it's essential to be in fairly good shape, have good waterproof boots, and have hiking experience. Most of the hikes are in the 10-15 km range, so they will take at least 4-5 hours to complete (longer if you stop a lot to admire the gorgeous views and rest). Don't underestimate these mountains -- the elevations are not high, but they are fairly rugged, and you will be climbing at least 300-400 meters of elevation most days.
The only negatives are the clear-cut sections of forest between Castletownbere and Alliehies, which are unsightly and horribly destructive, and the enormous quantities of sheep manure that you will be walking through during the entire hike. Also, if the weather is bad, you lose out on the views, so the hiking can feel like a slog without the rewards of the stunning vistas. Overall, we're glad we did it!

The Beara Way is fantastic. My wife and I booked two nights at a B&B in Eyeries because we knew that it would take us two days to see everything we wanted to see. I had traveled around the Beara Peninsula 20-22 years ago, but I think it was raining and all we did was quickly drive around the peninsula, not stopping to see anything. Big mistake! There is so much to see and do. As we were approaching the peninsula from Limerick, we thought we should stop for a late lunch somewhere before we got to Eyeries. We had no idea that Kenmare was such a great vacation spot, with plenty of restaurants and pubs and great shops (like the music store). After lunch we drove the beautiful road to Eyeries, with some of the best views we've seen in Ireland (and this is our 26th day in Ireland). Tomorrow we'll drive the rest of the loop, stopping at as many beaches as we can, and visiting the castle near Castletownbere.

Lots of scenic places to stop off for picnic or have meal in several restaurants. Visit Dereen Gardens near Lauragh for wonderful woodland experience and cafe.

Cannot recommend highly enough this cycle, it is tough, but can definitely be conquered by most experience levels, also the views on the cycle are some of the best I have ever seen - and like with a hike you get so much time to soak in those amazing views that are fleeting in a car journey.

The scenery is just breathtaking. You feel you want to stop to capture the views round every corner. The 2 mountain ranges make for beautiful vistas. Wonderful sunsets too, from the most westerley parts of Ireland.

The coastal drive is par of the Wild Atlantic Way is a very windy road with lots of places to pull in to take photos and enjoy the view. Just take your time on the drive around and give yourself plenty time.
One could go across in the ferry to Beare Island which still has a military presence on the island there is a regular ferry service to it.

The narrow roads add to the experience! The views are great on the way west from Glengarriff - but they are even better on the way back via Eyeries and the Healy Pass.

A beautiful scenic drive along the coast in a rural setting.
First time seeing that part of Cork. Travelled from Baltimore to Glengarriff over four days and enjoyed every minute and had some beautiful food.

If you choose the right B & B the hosts will almost certainly oblige you with drop offs and pick ups

I walked the wonderful dingle way last year and now I can hardly decide between walking the Beara or the Kerry way this summer. Is there anybody how has walked the Kerry way in August? Is it really crowded or is it just the Ring of Kerry along the roads which is very crowded?
Concerning the Beara way: Does anybody know if we should book the B&Bs along the Beara way in advance or just spontaneously? If we wouldn't like to walk the whole way, which part(s) would you skip and where would you start or finish?
Thank you very much!
