There are three great features to this venue: a medieval castle, a Greek Revival hall and amazing gardens.
The story starts with the early thirteenth century castle which is remarkably complete and most interesting. Attached to the castle is an Elizabethan mansion.
The second part of the visit is the early nineteenth century hall in the Greek revival style. As stately houses go the hall is rather dull and featureless, being more like a square stone bunker with little adornment. It will benefit from further restoration and the inclusion of furniture. The original village of Belsay was moved to build the hall, the stone for which was quarried from under where the old village stood: and that brings us to the most interesting part of the visit - the gardens.
In addition to the beautiful formal gardens, full of colour and form; there is a large unusual garden amongst the former quarries from which the stone for the house was sourced. This garden is less about colourful flowers and more about stone, trees, shrubs and ferns - very different and beautiful.

This place was quite hard to find and not really signposted.
The gardens were lovely. If you're coming with children, there is only one set of toilets which is before the entrance. If you go for a walk to the castle there are no loos! They are building another block , a cafe and playground but would it hurt to put some portaloos in? You can't go up the castle tower at present. Interesting to see the house in this state as well!

My first visit since 2019 and it was obvious that the gardens had been refreshed and it was nice to see some proper woodland floor planting. Lovely areas of wild flowers on the walk to the quarry and castle and some nice more formal planting with some lovely shrubs and perennials. Moving the car park much further away from the entrance seems a mistake with winding paths where what you really need is a straight route back to the car park. It was very bare and there’s still a lot of work going on so be prepared for a lot of noise.

Our first visit to Belsay, on 17 May. A lovely day walking in the beautiful gardens with our two dogs. We particularly enjoyed the quarry gardens. After a really enjoyable day, we found our car battery was flat. The staff in the shop and garden team couldn’t have been more helpful. They came to the car park with a tractor and jump leads and fixed the problem. We can’t thank them enough for getting us and our hot and tired dogs safely on our way again.

What an amazing day out, the gardens were stunning, the hall is so full of history it was a step back in time, the amazing stories of the war days were fantastic.

To begin with - the hall. Basically if you want to go and look at a huge tent, this is the place. Currently being renovated, I was met with what looked like a huge marquee. The hall was completely covered with scaffolding and tarpaulin whilst the work is done. You can go inside, but it is EMPTY! Maybe worth a visit in a few years, when it's completed, until then give it a miss.
The gardens. The gardens are quite impressive and there is a nice walks through them to the Castle. Avoid the garden tour/talk unless you are SERIOUSLY into gardening! The guide we had was very dull and not overly engaging, to the point that several us became so bored, we just left the tour.
The Castle although a ruin was the highlight of the visit. Unfortunately slightly marred by the amount of kids running wild about it, the building itself is very interesting. There are lots of nooks and crannies to explore and the view from the ramparts is spectacular.
Will I return? Maybe in a few years when all the renovations are complete.

It was a lovely place but at the moment it's a bit of a building site. The new car park and parts of the garden are still being constructed. The children's playground, visitors centre, cafe and toilets beside the castle are a long way off being completed. Some of the lawns around the house have been trashed by trucks. I would avoid the place for a few months.

We spent about 3 hours here and had an amazing time. The gardens are beautiful, the hall and the castle are both special in their own ways. And the food and drink in the cafe was pretty good too! The quarry garden in particular was stunning, especially the enormous magnolia tree.

Great Easter events provided. We booked for the ukulele workshop with Ian Brown. The event was such good fun and accessible for all ages. We were so surprised that we attended without any musical talent 😆 and became part of a ukulele orchestra playing wild thing 🎶. Superbly facilitated by Ian and his co presenter. The rest of our visit was interesting and fun. The Easter egg trail was well set out. The hall and castle are amazing and you are encouraged to explore all the way to the top of the castle battlements. Staff are just lovely and friendly. Loos always clean. Thankfully the weather was kind and we managed a picnic in the court yard. Splendid day, thank you.

The whole visit was great, peaceful gardens to walk around with lovely views and interesting information boards throughout. The lady at the reception was friendly and helpful, as were the outside groundskeeping staff who greeted us as we passed. The hall and castle/tower house were all fascinating to walk around. One only thing for me that would have made it even better would be to have seen more photos of them in theirs glory/furnished..this in each room particularly in the Hall would have been really interesting. The place is in a state of redevelopment (not affecting any of the current visitor aread mentioned at all however and did not hamper our visit) so would definitely return as the new developments look exciting!

Hi, Terri. What would you like to know about this attraction? We are visiting in June and would like to bring a picnic which seems to be mentioned a lot in reviews. Where are the places that you can actually take your picnic or is it in the car park only. Thank you in advance. Terri

If the weather's a bit off there's a nice summerhouse with table and seats as you walk round to the rock garden

Is it possible to get to Belsay Hall and Gardens from Newcastle using public transport ?

Yes . You can catch a bus from Eldon Square Bus Station to Jedburgh which only runs a few times a day, not sure of the number. The bus stops at Belsay then you'd walk to the Hall grounds or get a lift.
