Great lake which you can walk around in 40 minutes and park for free for an hour

We’re regular visitors with our dog to Bolam Lake. It’s a lovely walk, whatever time of the year. It was quite busy today and we were dismayed to see a group of visitors allow their dogs on the picnic table. Another group, cyclists we think, left their rubbish on trays on the ground for someone else to clear. This shows a lack of respect for the staff and other visitors. On the plus side, we had the best bacon rolls - a real treat! Thank you to the Visitor Centre Staff.

Toilets very clean exceptional site very well maintained clean and tidy fantastic view of horses etc the best is the manager Dave he goes above and beyond even helping us start our car loaning us a gazebo as was raining . His number was given incase of any problems very very friendly . Toilets very clean and cleaned regularly always plenty of toilet roll and rubbish taken regular also I’d highly recommend this site great for families and kids. Thanks Sylvia and Jeff

I used to come to Bolam Lake as a boy with family friends, so was keen to visit Bolam Lake again after a break of over 40 years. Yes it's still a very nice walk on a hot day, the wildlife is interesting( saw the swans on the lake, a few red squirrels and a deer running off) and the information boards about the fauna and flora are very informative. Also on a hot day Bolam Lake is excellent to walk a dog, have a picnic and to go boating( for a fee) or just chill out.
However, Bolam Lake has a few shortcomings that visitors need to know about. While many tourist attractions in Northumberland either don't charge or have a modest charge for their car parks, Bolam Lake charges a considerable £ 4 to park for over 2 hours. On a Monday, when I visited, the cafe was closed, meaning unless you bring your own refreshments, the nearest cafe or shop is 3 miles away. Also parts of the park around the lake aren't very well maintained and look shabby, which doesn't create a good impression.
I would recommend Bolam Lake if you want a walk around the lake, but it' or to have a picnic,as the picnic facilities are good, but there are better days out in Northumberland

First visit to Bolam Lake County park.
We walked around the lake twice first time through the wooded area. The second time we found a seat and had a picnic. There is a visitors centre and toilets. The swans were beautiful to see and the water lily's. Lovely place for a walk or a pinic.

Many years since I was last here & it was just as beautiful as I remembered with majestic swans gliding across the lake, the setting, the surroundings, the views, simply stunning, I was not impressed with the one way system, not necessary & things change on Monday so would like to see this abolished, some parents shouldn’t be allowed children either when they can’t stop them from attempting to prod the swans, wanted to throw her & the child in the lake!

Lovely park with a beautiful lake. I like how they have a one way system around the lake. Great idea! This was an excellent place for my dogs, as they got to cool off in the lake. A few swans about but they kept away.
We had a drink from the kiosk and an ice cream from the van. Lots of benches in the shade and scattered all around the lake. Path was good for walking.
Highly recommend this place.

Haven't been for 30 years until May half term. So much better than I remember! Easy to walk round and decent cafe and ice cream van. Took us about an hour to go round, not including drinks.

this lovely little lake is a stones throw from Belsay and Newcstle and worth a few hours to look round, bring the family and your pets and take a walk round the lovey lake and woodland while spotting all the different birds and wildlife that you an find. please note there is a 1 way system in operation in line with covet regulations which is a great help , you can park free for 1 hour or if you want to stay longer and have a pick nick in the sun on the many areas available , the choice is yours,

Ideal for a short walk during restrictions this country park has good well marked footpaths. Boots or strong shoes are best at this time of year because the paths can be muddy. The walks are around the lake which has a lot of birds with many swans that always look regal and at home in their surroundings. Several short boardwalks are avaiable to allow you to get close and feed if you wish. The views across the water and of the surrounding countryside are very peaceful and enjoyable.
There is a cafe (serving takeaway only at the moment) and 3 good carparks. Parking is free for the first hour and very reasonable for longer periods.

I have walked around the lake on a number of occasions and rarely have seen cyclists. When walking it gives the opportunity to see wildlife in the trees and the varying natural beauty on offer. There is a lot of countryside away from Bolam lake with solid roads which is ideal for cyclists and equally beautiful

No there is no stand but people bq on the large green .
Can you take a small boat on to the lake

As far as I know Northumberland County Council are responsible for Bolam lake you would need to ask them. I rarely see anyone fish there. You could ask at the on site cafe. Hope this helps.

Is it wheelchair accessible

Yes it is. We went there last month. My husband uses a mobility scooter but there were people in wheelchairs too. They suggest you go in an anti clockwise direction though I'm not sure it really makes much difference. Most of the path is either very smooth or boarded. You can easily get out on the little jetties sticking out into the lake. The last shirt section of the walk wasn't quite as smooth but is nevertheless easily navigable. To get from the car park there is a short designated zig zag wheelchair path which avoids the steep slope up and down.
Can you put a inflatable dinghy on the Lake

No only the only boats allowed on the lake are fishing club boats.
